Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said Wednesday he would consider it a "slap in the face" if the New England Patriots place the franchise tag on him, which is expected if a long-term extension is not reached.

[The franchise tag] is decent money for most people out there. What I do, it's OK. But I don't look at myself as an OK player. ... It's just basically a slap in my face and an insult to me to basically tell me I'm an OK player."

-- Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork

"I want a long-term deal or I want to be free. Point blank," Wilfork said during an interview on Boston sports radio station WEEI.

Wilfork, who has been vocal since about his desire for an extension, just finished the final season of a six-year rookie contract. He is in line for a raise and long-term deal if he hits the open market. The Patriots could prevent him from being a free agent if they place the franchise tag on him, which they could during a two-week stretch in February.

"I didn't like that six-year deal but I did honor my six-year deal," Wilfork said on WEEI. "Now that the deal is up, it's time for me to move forward, with the Patriots or without the Patriots."

Wilfork, 28, is a two-time Pro Bowler. He would view being tagged as an insult by the Patriots.

"[The franchise tag] is decent money for most people out there. What I do, it's OK," Wilfork said. "But I don't look at myself as an OK player. Like I said, it's just basically a slap in my face and an insult to me to basically tell me I'm an OK player."

Analysis: Wilfork taking a hard line
ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss thinks Vince Wilfork is saying "No more Mr. Nice Guy" to the Patriots. Blog.

For Wilfork, the franchise tag -- which is a one-year deal -- also means a missed opportunity to gain long-term financial security for his family.

"There's a short window of opportunity for me to make the type of money that I want to make ..." Wilfork said. "I'm not selling my family short and I'm definitely not selling myself short just to stay back and to win and be part of a great organization.

"Winning is a big part of sports, but a lot of teams win. ... We'll see. I will do what's best for my family. But I definitely will not sell myself short of my ability. Not at all."

Wilfork said he and his agent have not heard from the Patriots since the end of the season and the sides have not talked about an extension since the beginning of the season.

"I'm not sitting by the phone waiting for them to call," said Wilfork, who will play in the Pro Bowl in Miami on Sunday. "Either they call or they don't. They have all the numbers they need. ... Whenever they call, they call."

Well, at least he's honest about his goals as a player! If I'm New England, I'd love to trade the guy to a losing team that's NOT a great organization for some good draft picks! Of course the FA aspect of this scenario pretty makes that a non-option.

I feel so sorry for him. Middle of a recession and him getting top 5 dt money and him having to feed his family on it. The shame of the Patriots. Dude needs to think before he opens his mouth. Yes he is up front and honest but people are losing there jobs, homes , and cars trying to figure out how to feed there families and he is spouting off about his families future when he is making millions. I hope he's ready to get franchised. He's gonna have to hold out like Richard Seymour did several years ago.

If I were Wilfork, I wouldn't want to be tagged either.

Any player that has played as well as he has and is entering the back-end of his prime wants that long-term deal. I'd want the same.

Wilfork talking about it in this fashion doesn't bother me in the least. However, if he and others like him had an ounce of smarts, they'd also make noise about how this should be fixed in the next CBA

He gets franchised which means he's only paid for the year. At any point he could get injured, and that's his last pay check.

Meanwhile worse players than him are making much more. Now it might be difficult to see from his perspective, but it's true, he doesn't make a stink over his rookie contract, he wants to be paid his value. Players don't like to be franchised because the guarenteed money is low. Sure it's good for a year, but if he's injured, that's his last paycheck ever.

Meanwhile Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams made how much guarenteed?

Millions are still millions

Can't say I've followed the story. I don't know what he is asking for, is it reasonable? I don't know what the Patriots have offered, if they have even made an offer yet? Have they even started negotiating?

I don't have a problem with a guy airing his stuff in the media IF he has already taken the steps to engage his team and been ignored or been offered something insultingly low.. but is this how he is STARTING the process? If so, then I do have a problem with that.

As far as making noise and fixing this in the CBA.. that's fine, they should do that but they need to do it while remembering that players LOVED the franchise tag option when it was put in originally .... so if they have changed their minds and now want it out, I can respect that but don't act like the franchise tag option was forced down their throats and they hated it from the beginning because that's just not true.

I read some of the posts on this thread,, I kinda get the feeling this is more about postering then it is a slap in the face. Kinda just like what Cribbs did.

Can't fault the team for using a system that allows the Franchise tag. Like you said ... Complain to HIS union. If you don't like the system.. try and change it. Complaining to the fans does nothing.

I would agree with that. Not saying he should be happy with the franchise tag. All I said is that he waited until the contract he signed had expired before commenting on it.

I'm not sure I follow what your saying. I think, at least with the Browns, that if a guy gets hurt & is placed on the IR, he does still recieve his check for the rest of the year. Right? If they tag him at say 9 mil. & he gets hurt, I still think he's set for life.

Toad,

I gotta agree with this.

I always laugh when people yell at athletes for being displeased about a contract. "But, but...they already make millions!!!," the masses shout.

True, but it's all relative. Let's say you're a typical cube dweller making, oh I don't know, 50K a year. If you find out the guy in the cube next to you makes 60K for performing exactly the same thing, you're going to be upset. Most of you would feel that you had the right to complain! Of course, the guy washing dishing at the local diner making 12K a year is going to say "50K? 60K? What's the difference you greedy S.O.B.?" Point is, some of it is about money (as Wilfork's got to cover a lifetime's worth of earnings before he's forty), but part of it is also about pride, which almost any worker will have. No one wants to get paid the same (or less) than someone they outperform, or are equal to.

Much respect to ya, even if you wish me the opposite...

First, I think everyone knows you were joking. The one poster just took a dig at Cribbs, then all I did was make a comment regarding Wilfork wanting a long-term contract.

To answer your question, when a player signs his franchise tagged contract, if he's hurt slipping on a loose towel in the locker-room before his very first practice and blows out his knee, he will receive the full amount. It's guaranteed money no matter what happens as long as it's football-related.

Yeah, but longterm, that could be his last contract. Sure 9 mil sounds great. But when other guys who are worse than Wilfork get longterm contracts with much more guarenteed, I understand how Wilfork thinks it's unfair. That's why players don't like being franchised......... Now that's part of the CBA, but I understand how Wilfork feels he's disrespected.

He keeps his mouth shut, players great, he wants a new LONG-TERM contract. Not a one year contract which could possibly be his last if something goes wrong.......

It's huge money which makes people say he's being a jerk. But if you're making 8 million for one year and another guy (who is inferior) is making 50 million, 20 million guarenteed for 5 years. It might bother you

NFL players have a short career..so? they also make more in their short career then a lot of people will in their lifetime...

$35 million works out to be making $583k a year for 60 years....

Just $4 million works out to be making $66k a year for 60 years...

There are plenty of people starving out there... and yet they want to complain? seriously...

So Wilfork gets franchised, hurts his knee in the preseason, and gets none of that money, then if his career isn't over, hopes someone will give him a portion of what he could get this year.

The system may suck, and seem unfair, but its what's inplace and its not going to drasticaly change just because most of america is unemployed, I'm one of them, I know.

People like Cribbs because he's a Brown so its ok for him to complain about a contract he signed. But Vince does something along the same lines, with more reason to talk about it (seeing as ya know, he honored his contract) and he's.a bad guy?

Here are the franchise and transition numbers for the upcoming off-season.

Quote:

The franchise tag is derived by averaging the top five salaries at each respective position for last season.

And the transition tag represents the average of the top 10 salaries at each position.

Here's a look at the official franchise and transition tags for each position this year:

The cornerback franchise number is $9.566 million. The transition number is $8.056 million.

At defensive end, it's $12.398 million for the franchise tag and $10.193 million for the transition tag.

The defensive tackle franchise number is $7.003 million and $6.353 million for transition.

For linebackers, it's $9.680 million and $8.373 million.

At safety, it's $6.455 million and $6.011 million.

On the offensive line, it's $10.731 million and $9.142 million

Punters and kickers are $2.814 million and $2.629 million.

At quarterback, the franchise tag rises to $16.405 million with a $14.546 million transition tender.

For running backs, it's $8.156 million and $7.151 milllion.

At tight end, it's $5.908 million and $5.248 million.

The wide receiver franchise tender is $9.521 million and the transition number is $8.651 million.

LOL... $7 million guaranteed. I'll take that slap in the face and ask for another!

Having said that, I do understand wanting a long term deal. However, given the state of the CBA talks I would take the franchise tag and be happy about it for the following reasons:

1. It's a lot of money for a 1-year contract and it is all guaranteed.

2. I don't know what the new CBA is going to look like after 2010 (or even if there is going to be football in 2011). Seems to me it would be wise to play out the 1-year deal, let the CBA get ironed out and THEN negotiate a long-term deal that gets the most out of terms of the new CBA (rather than trying to get a long-term deal based on the old terms -- which may or may not be more advantageous to veteran players).

3. It is a LOT of money and it is all guaranteed!

The guy did his 6 years without renegotiating...most fans would die to see that on their team.

I think it is fair that he feels it a slap in the face, regardless of the money. If he finished his contract with a reasonable expectation of renegotiating for a long term I can see how he feels it is unfair...it isn't just the money it is the stability.

I am really against big money for athletes, however a few years back I made a living cleaning carpets and Dave Puzzuoli was a customer one day. GREAT guy, offered to help move stuff, made us sandwiches and lemonade(his wife was out) and gave us a tip when we finished. But the best part was talking football with him. I believe he retired with a back or neck problem, but the other was painful too. Add both knees and one hip and a few other dings...and sadly he was before the real big bucks. I can see how that money doesn't seem as much 10 years later I guess.

My comment isn't about the player, but the attitude of the player. So as our own example, Josh finished his contract that he signed instead of renegotiating early...and wanted a long contract with the team when he resigned one.

The more I think about this, the more one sided this seems. This is a one sided deal in favor of the franchise.

In the US, we pride ourselves on the concept of a free and fair market. - For almost all of us the employment market isn't a concept, rather it's a reality. We get paid for what we are qualified to do - pure and simple. If we don't like what we are getting paid, then we have the choice to go elsewhere - pure and simple. - That's what makes this country great. We have millions of people striving to improve themselves so that they are able to find a sought after position on the market.
I noted a moment ago that if we don't like what we are getting paid, we can go elsewhere - unless there is a contract in place. Fair enough, Wilfork signed a contract and lived up to his end of the bargain. The contract has expired and he should be allowed to test the market - just like any of us are able to do. However, he is not able to do so because the Patriots are able to essentially kill Wilfork's options by offering him market value for one year - but he could get market value for 4-6 years somewhere else. That isn't fair or American.

This franchise tag system isn't fair. It needs to change so that the player is given market value for a set amount of years. - The player should have a say in the amount of years he can be tagged - from the start. If the Patriots have the option of tagging him, then the tag should have a fair amount of years attached - something fair for the player - 5 maybe 6 years seems to be fair. This would discourage teams from using the franchise tag and would deliver a fair market.

I think it would be fair if a player couldn't be franchised two years in a row. You would have 1 extra year to trade or sign a guy but if an agreement couldn't be reached the player could hit FA.

I disagree. When the contract is up, it's up. - That should be the end of it.

Keep in mind that there is another unfair angle also involved. - If another team wants to offer the player a contract, and eventually do come to an agreement with a player, they are forced to give 1 or 2 first round draft picks as part of the compensation. - So not only are teams essentially killing the player's options, they are also killing the market that sets the players value for the one year they are forcing him to sign for.

- The true market value can't be established if teams are afraid to bid because they don't want to lose their first round pick.

It's hard to believe the owners and GM's have gotten away with this for so long.
