What question!!!! Which Tillman I subconciously refused Tiller for?
It's probably Charles Tillman to be honest! In Madden 2006 he was always on my fantasy draft team.
But honestly, give me a break on this one Mac. I admitted I was wrong, I didn't even think about Pat Tillman when writing the post. I never really knew much about the guy, I know that he was an NFL player who left his career to go serve his country in Afghanistan. He later died under friendly fire and if i'm not mistaken, the army claimed it was under different circumstances. He's a hero, and I understand that. I guess I should have made my subject the title of the article. Unfortunately, I wrote the subject before cutting and pasting the article right before graduate class.
It's something that I'm passionate about (late term abortion), so I wasn't even that concerned with the names of Roeder or Tiller. I wasn't that familiar with the case, I remember it happened awhile ago, and I saw a Law and Order Episode recently that was sort of based off of it. Obviously I should have paid more attention to the names in the article when I posted it rather than just reading the content and quickly posting it and throwing in my opinion. After that it just snowballed and I kept calling the guy Tillman.
What if I accidentally called the guy Till instead of Tiller. would I suddenly be a racist for associating the Dr. with Emmett Till (the young boy who was brutally murdered in Missippi in 1955)? Or Timlin, then I'd suddenly be a Red Sox fan (Mike Timlin)? You jump to too many conclusions Mac. May be I need to hire an editor to make sure this never happens again..........
But that dog is pretty cool!

his point is that late term abortions are a barbaric destruction of viable human life and have no place in a civilized society that puts people in prison for killing cats and dogs.
So to use this one guys actions to not hear the point seems rather silly to me.
And what I'm saying is that he's chosen to stand up against this 'barbaric destruction' by walking into a church filled with people, and blowing someone's head off in front of his loved ones.
It's not THE argument that should be dismissed, but HIS ... people shouldn't hem and haw or 'be on the fence' about this guy ... if anything, they should say 'what an animal, 'what a freak'. A good course of action would be to absolutely disavow the guy, and make sure he's as far away from the debate as possible ... not say 'I can see where he's coming from'.

That's ridiculous. Petey admitted he made a mistake and you're basically calling him a liar.
On to the topic: if the Bible says "an eye for an eye" - then someone needs to put a gun to Roeder's head and splatter his brains. The man is a kook, a rabid dog and we put rabid dogs down. And this from a guy (me) who's devoutly anti -abortion, except in cases of rape or incest.

I'm confused....I think you meant Roeder instead of Tiller?? (Given the last statement "And this is from...")

If the man believes what he says, he's no better than the doctor. Murder is murder and he is no less guilty of the crime. Sometimes reality bites and once again, if he believes what he says there will also be a special place in hell for him as well.

I've been trying to get somebody with your viewpoint to answer this very simple question: Do you see all who kill another human going to hell?
Murder is murder, as you say, but it is defined as killing not legally sanctioned by the government. Since you use the term "murder" (unlawful killing), it seems to follow that you see the line drawn between heaven and hell lies with man (specifically government) and not with God.

No. I just believe many who do see it this way will try to equate his reasoning for the crime to make it a "special case" because of his reasoning behind it.
My view? God judges men, not me. It's not my job. I am human so I have sinned. According to the Bible I have no right to cast stones. So I feel the man broke the very rules of the Bible. He played judge, jury and executioner when the Bible plainly states that isn't left to his discretion. And according to my personal beliefs, his outcome and what happens in the after life will be left up to God.

No, that's not my belief at all. Nor is it my call to make. But many believe murder will send you to hell. If that is their belief then he is no less guilty of murder than a crack dealer murdering someone over a drug debt.
Any time someone premeditatidly plays judge, jury and executioner it goes against every principal the Bible states no matter your reasoning. So using excuses in no way lessons the fact you commited murder and decided to play God yourself. Saying you killed someone for "insert reason here" doesn't make you any less of a murderer no matter what that reason may be. That's my belief.
He's a cold blooded, pre-mediatated murderer. And the jury of 12 seemed to agree. The rest is left to God.

If the man believes what he says
This was my qualifier. If he believes in the Bible, knows the truth, has read the book, then he should know that he was wrong. He should have known he didin't have the right to kill this man. That it was God's job to judge this doctor, not his. Therefore, if he believes the Bible he knows he commited murder and took the right for vengence from God (vengence is mine saith the Lord) which is biblicly wrong.

Thanks for the reply. Personally I see his moral conflict as not much different than somebody who claims belief in the Bible and then enlists in the military - seeing that it is my understanding that the commandment says not to kill. From what I've read here it seems like that was being watered down to just murder isn't okay.

I'm not a religious person, but I never saw any asterisks or 'unless' after 'thou shall not kill'.
As far likening his 'moral conflict' to members of the armed services ... I find that to be a disrespect to members of the armed services (not that I believe you intended to in any way).
This guy didn't have a 'moral conflict' -- he killed an innocent man in cold blood, because of mental problems.

Mental problems? I previously stated I believe his verdict was just but if you're saying he should have been acquitted on insanity then I'll say that wouldn't have upset me.

When I say 'mental problems', I mean more along the lines of a personality disorder.
I don't think he should've been acquitted in any sense ... he knew what he did.

My belief is Roeder's action was based on his view that Tiller was some sort of terrorist that needed to be stopped. While I don't agree with the means he used, I do respect Roeder more than Tiller - and I don't view the murder as being hypocritical to Roeder's religious beliefs any more than killings sanctioned by our government.

Petey...if you say so...
Seems odd to see someone familiar with the case getting the name of the Doctor killed mixed up with a soldier who died in Afghanistan.
If you simply copy and past the title used on the article... "Roeder: No regrets after shooting doctor"...
...that kind of stuff can be avoided.

I have to agree. Murder is murder. Killing Tiller isn't going to stop abortions. I seriously doubt it will put much of a dent in the aborting of those babies that are viable. I would have found him guilty in a nano second. i think the guy should never see the light of day.
To me the sickest thing is where he did it. How can anyone go into a place of worship and kill someone, especially in front of all of the guys family?
I understand that hatred for Tiller. In my opinion he destroyed human beings for nothing but profit. Legal or not, killing babies that are viable is disgusting to me. I simply can't see the other side of the argument.
I read Reckon's comments and can almost understand his point. The thing is Roeder is every bit the monster Tiller was by killing him where he did.
Nothing good will ever come out of this...

I can't but then I can't have any real respect for Tiller either and folks are making him out to be some sort of hero.
But this is the point... if Tiller was killing 1 month old babies because their moms wanted him to because they were sick or had a terminal disease or whatever, then most sane people would consider him a monster and quite a few people would probably be glad to put the bullet in his head. Roeder draws no distinction between a baby that's 1 month from being born and one that was born 1 month ago... in his mind it was a simple case of vigilante justice directed toward a guy that had eluded the law in previous attempts to stop him... I'm not defending what he did, but his mindset is not all that different than what a lot of peoples mindset would be if the "crime" was different...

I don't think the guy is a hero...I don't think he was a villain.
I know he didn't deserve to have his brains smeared across the pews of a church.
I know the people in that church - families, children, etc. shouldn't have had to see such a scene.

This whole 'vigilante justice' notion is a complete cop out. Roeder killed a man while he was attending church with his family.
His sick mind manifested the murder as somehow righteous, and because it happened to be over a very hot button issue, some folks err towards explaining or excusing his actions. You hear lots of 'I'm not defending him, but...' or 'I don't condone what he did, but...'
Just shameful.
If someone walked into a church, and killed an Air Force pilot, claiming that they were stopping them from dropping anymore bombs on innocent civilians, do you honestly think you'd hear a lot of 'I'm not defending him, but...' or 'I don't condone what he did, but...' ... and if someone did, would the reaction be anything but disgust?
I get that Roeder had some kooky religious views ... and while that may help to shed light on his mental issues, it shouldn't warrant the cautious defense he's getting on this thread from so many.

IMO that's absurd. When you claim to know and believe the Bible, that holds no merrit. None, nada zero.
Let's try this again. Vengence is mine saith the Lord. He who be without sin let him cast the first stone.
And last but most certainly not least......................
Judge ye not lest ye too shall also be judged.
He ignored and diregarded SEVERAL scrpitures that describe the very things he did. He took the job God said was his own and took matters into his own hands.
Vigilante justice based on his own singular belief on one singular issue rather than anything and everything the Bible says that contradicts such very actions. Plain and simple.
So according to the scriptures he will be judged just the way he judged Tillman. And what would that result be? It's all in the book. Some just decide to ignore, distort and disregard what that book says while using the same religious beliefs in order to twist, stetch and mock the Bible to do the very opposite of what it teaches. Pretty cut and dry when reading it for what it says and being objective.

I'm not a very deeply religious person, so I may be wrong here...
If what the bible says is true, then the abortion doctor will get whats coming to him when he dies and goes before God. All the babies that never had the chance to be born will get a free ticket into heaven. Doesn't it say something along the lines of children are not responsible for the sins of the father? There is more to it than that, but do you know the part of which I speak? My interpretation of that is that children cannot be held responsible because they do not yet understand right and wrong, sin, etc. and therefore are welcomed into heaven if they were to die young (or in this case, aborted). Like I said, I'm far from an expert and my biblical knowledge is limited but that is what I have taken from it to apply to this situation.
The part I am way more familiar with is where it specifically states that you should not commit cold blooded murder. Pretty sure its in there, though not in those exact words. I think planning to walk into a church and shoot a man dead in front of his friends and family, and then carrying out that plan qualifies as cold blooded murder.
Also, I know it says in there that it is not our place to judge, it is God's place to judge.
So, what confuses me, is that if this man Roeder believes that the doctor will be judged by God for what he did, and he also believes that these arborted babies will go straight to heaven, and he also believes that it is not his place to judge because it is God's place to judge... why did he do this?
So, logically, there leaves 2 explanations. Either Roeder has serious doubts about what the bible says being true or he is completely insane. Ultimately it makes no difference as whats done is done, but that was what I was left with after reading about this situation.

If I showed you pictures of children blown to bits by by land mines, would it mean you would respect me when I shot the manufacturing company's CEO in a public church?
Another shining example of the lunacy of religion ... you actually have otherwise rational people defending or excusing away this cat.

If land mines were being planted in your neighborhood playgrounds and the government was protecting those behind it, then most certainly, I'd consider your duty to take the matter into your own hands.
Now as far as defending Roeder, as far as the legal system goes I have stated he should be punished in accordance to the law. Morally however, the way I see it, neither you nor I can say whether or not Roeder was used to perform His will. I openly admit that if His will was involved, I'm far more at ease with the notion that Roeder was used to perform it rather than it being the case that His will was being performed by Tiller. We'll never know, but if choosing between one or the other, that's how I would place my bet. I certainly would not be comfortable in calling the possibility of His intervention lunacy.

While we're at it ... who else do you think was working 'His will'? How about O.J. Simpson? Or Timmy McVeigh? Was Charles Manson an intervention from God?

I now understand a bit more clearly your uneasiness with my reference to those in the military who kill, while I'm at peace and freely respect and honor their service.

I see no one has commented on Roeder's threatening to shoot people in the parking lot who were trying to stop him leaving. Kinda sullies the purity of the "avenging angel", doesn't it?
Lynch-mob justice is no justice at all. The mob may be right, the mob may be wrong, the mob does not care, the mob simply wants blood. All should sincerely hope that they never face such a situation. You become not a human being with rights but simply entertainment.
As for Tiller, my ex and I came very close to needing the services of such a person. She had a mis-diagnosed heart condition which began around the fifth month. She almost died on the table, I guess technically she did, and we were told her life-span has been significantly shortened.
Now, since the divorce she has done things I'm certain God would not be happy with. So I guess it would be OK to just blow her brains out, also.
On abortion in general, most would accept this in the case of rape, incest, or risk to the health or life of the mother. But in such cases, no one has suggested that an abortion be mandatory. So who gets to make that choice? In terms of the unborn child, how is that choice any different than an "elective" abortion?
I believe a woman owns her own body. Period.

I cannot remember a previous time that I commented on this issue.. so I'm pretty sure I know I shouldn't. But what the hell.. I refrain from telling a woman (or really anyone) what she can and cannot do with their body, because I think that if I do.. I should have a reasonable expectation that she will come back and tell me what I can and cannot do with mine. And THAT is simply unacceptable. Therefore I don't do it. There are quite a few people that if they suddenly expired from natural causes or otherwise, it wouldn't bother me a whole lot. Bin Laden and Terry McAulay and the Jax officiating crew come to mind..

So Phil it is your contention then that if he had burst into the clinic and shot Tiller just before he killed another unborn baby, then this would somehow be more understandable right? I mean a large part of your argument seems to center on the fact that he did it in a church, in front of other innocent people and his family, etc...... so if the situation was different, would your opinion be different? Quote:
This whole 'vigilante justice' notion is a complete cop out.
No it's not, not when you are trying to understand what was going on his mind that led to this.. Phil I know it's a whole lot easier to just call him a lunatic, a mentally deranged and unstable fringe radical that deserves the electric chair and leave it at that... rather than actually try to get inside his head and figure out when and why he snapped... I also fully understand that you mistake my desire to understand why he did what he did with excusing what he did... though you couldn't be more wrong.

If a guy in your city was killing 2 week old babies because they had a terminal illness or were severely handicapped and the law refused to do anything about it, would the reaction be anything but disgust? Would the guy that stopped him by putting a bullet in his head be considered a lunatic fringe radical religious nutjob? I'm just curious.
