If you can only pick ONE song which would be your all time favorite and why? Try to use You Tube so that way we can all listen to your pick right here. Also please just pick one song. I'll start it with mine:
This song is my favorite simply because of the lyrics and the build up. Many people don't like Dylan's voice but it's the raspiness that makes him and in this song the emotion comes through and you can feel the torment that he's feeling and that's why this is my all time favorite.
I'll play. Was actually constructing a poll in K-9 Consensus last night for favorite rock vocalist but gave up because there were just too many great front-men! Favorite song I don't think I can narrow to one, so I will throw out a few.
Imagine- John Lennon. The words just mean too much for me and actually sort of sum up my world-view. Just a beautiful song. I even like the cover done for it my Maynard in A Perfect Circle.
Everlong- Foo Fighters. The song just captures what is happiness. Also, the euphemisms to sexual ecstasy is pure genius and the melody is just absolutely freaking harmonic.
Lateralus- Tool. The build-up and deep lyrics to this one move me every time. It's just very deep and contemplative into the nature and meaning of life. I love all 9 minutes of the song I must say. Maynard's vocals (who is my favorite lead vocalist by the way) are very powerful and the guitar/drums by Jones and Carey impressive also. The song and words even go along with the Fibonacci sequence for anyone who questions the depth of Tool's music. No one should go without hearing this song!
Pardon Me- Incubus. The entire Make Yourself CD has impacted me really to always think independantly and choose my own path. This is a great, intense song. I'm showing my age now, aren't I?
Lastly I have to throw in a Bob Marley song. My personal favorite is Could You Be Loved.
Good thread!

Politicians are puppets, y'all. Let's get Geppetto!
Anyways I agree with you about Maynard. He's definitley in my top 5 all time vocalists. Depending on my mood he's exactly what I want to hear. I actually like his A Perfect Circle stuff more than Tool but I like both allot.
I have way too many favorites to pick just one ... here's one of them, though (and a salute to our Canadian friends).
"Subdivisions" - Rush
Sprawling on the fringes of the city In geometric order An insulated border In between the bright lights And the far unlit unknown
Growing up it all seems so one-sided Opinions all provided The future pre-decided Detached and subdivided In the mass production zone Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone
[Chorus:] (Subdivisions) In the high school halls In the shopping malls Conform or be cast out (Subdivisions) In the basement bars In the backs of cars Be cool or be cast out Any escape might help to smooth the unattractive truth But the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth
Drawn like moths we drift into the city The timeless old attraction Cruising for the action Lit up like a firefly Just to feel the living night
Some will sell their dreams for small desires Or lose the race to rats Get caught in ticking traps And start to dream of somewhere To relax their restless flight Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights...

FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT The days grow shorter and the nights are getting long Feels like we're running out of time Every day it seems much harder tellin' right from wrong You got to read between the lines
Don't get discouraged, don't be afraid, we can Make it through another day Make it worth the price we pay
The Good Book says it's better to give than to receive I do my best to do my part Nothin' in my pockets I got nothin' up my sleeve I keep my magic in my heart
Keep up your spirit, keep up your faith, baby I am counting on you You know what you've got to do
CHORUS: Fight the good fight every moment Every minute every day Fight the good fight every moment It's your only way
All your life you've been waiting for your chance Where you'll fit into the plan But you're the master of your own destiny So give and take the best that you can
You think a little more money can buy your soul some rest You'd better think of something else instead You're so afraid of being honest with yourself You'd better take a look inside your head
Nothing is easy, nothing good is free But I can tell you where to start Take a look inside your heart There's an answer in your heart
Wow. Almost too hard to come up with just one. I could do this for several genres but since I like rock the best, I'll go with 'Who Knows?' by Band of Gypsies, which is Jimi Hendrix's second trio. It's the opening track on their live album, 'Band of Gypsies.' I could listen to this album every day of my life and not get sick of it.
There's a bit of narration before the song starts up . . .
Not deep in meaning, but not everything has to be. This song could get me completely fired up if woken up in the middle of the night. Slash just murders the guitar. Love it. . .
My all time favorite song is The Hollies- long cool woman in a black dress
When I was younger my brother used to have a sweet 72 blazer with a huge lift and we used to cruise around blasting that song with the top off in the summer.
Quote from Steve Earle: "Townes van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that."

Neither do I, it's tough being somewhat dysfunctional on the pc, maybe I can get a grant from the current adminstration for it but I've been on a Frank Zappa kick lately.....well more like the last 36 years, and with the amount and variety of music he put out over the years, it's tough for me to say which song is my favorite, instrumentally I love "Son of Mr Greenjeans" Hot Rats 1970, or "Call any Vegetable" from the Zappa Plays Zappa DVD I got for xmas.
Really hard to come up with one,but I was able to narrow it down to two and then really struggled to decide between the two of them. The one I left out was Black by Pearl Jam. I am not the biggest Peal Jam fan and really wasnt into the grunge thing too much but Black to me is just a masterpiece.
So the one I picked is Away From the Sun by 3 Doors Down. As someone who has battled depression its hidden meaning is special to me

No way can I choose just one song. There are too many songs for too many emotions for me personally.
Currently I've been in a very romantic/mushy/I need you kinda mood, so my playlist reflects that heavily. (BTW, thanks for that one Peen! I had missed that one for my playlist!)
I'll just post one that I wake up singing to her every day lately.

The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. - Carl Sagan
Anything by the band Boston (one of the greatest rock bands ever). Here is a tribute to Brad Delp, who was undoubtedly one of the greatest rock singers ever (singing "More Than a Feeling").
Ok, no YouTube link, but my if I can only pick one song it would be "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. He's always said that it's the one song of his he wished he had written (and he's written some good ones).
Runners up Yesterday - The Beatles Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper Standing Outside the Fire - Garth Brooks She's Got a Way - Billy Joel (it's OUR song)
Between the 5 on any given day any of them could be chosen as favorite.
"We were just another band out of Boston,...On the road to try to make ends meet,...Playin' all the bars; sleepin' in our cars,.... And we practiced right down out in the street,... No, we didn't have much money,...We barely made enough to survive,... But when we got up on stage and got ready to play,... People came alive,..."
I would say Rock wise it would have to be "Boogie with Stu - Led Zeppelin"
It's a shame that they never put this onto any other album. Which was Physical Graffiti. I am a big Robin Trower fan, but this song is the only one that get's your head bobbing & yer foot movin.
I still have dial up so I am not going to bother with you-tube. It's not worth the 30 min. wait just to listen to 5 min. of music. Sorry
