I still wear his OSU jersey...let's bring him home. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/30/troy-smith-wants-to-play-for-the-browns/Troy Smith wants to play for the Browns Posted by Mike Florio on January 30, 2010 10:02 AM ET Quarterback Troy Smith currently plays for the franchise that used to be the Cleveland Browns. (Cue the Browns fans either who insist that the Ravens were never the Browns or who get pissed at us for mentioning it.) Now, Smith wants to play for the franchise that currently is the Cleveland Browns. Smith made his preferences known in a recent interview with Mark "Munch" Bishop of ESPN Radio's Cleveland affiliate. "There is no doubt about it," Smith said regarding his desire to play for the Browns. "It has always been a childhood dream of mine. It's funny how we always talk about Cleveland. That's the first thing that comes to mind with anything I do whether I get a chance to come home and be a part of that organization or not. You know, I would love to get that chance if that opportunity comes up, but the political and right thing to say in this situation is that I would love to be anywhere that would give me a chance. But, without a doubt, there would be no second guessing in my mind if I could come back home and be a part of something that I love." Earlier this week, Bills safety Donte Whitner lobbied, Twitter style, for Buffalo to make a play for Smith, who currently is stuck behind Joe Flacco in Baltimore. Smith, the 2006 Heisman winner, would have opened the 2008 season as the starter in Baltimore, but for a case of tonsilitis that gave Flacco a chance to take snaps as a rookie.

Or not.
I'm ready not ready to give draft picks or platers for a QB that hasn't proven anything.
Plus, we already have a QB that dreamed of playing for the Browns when he was a kid.
And who cares if you still wear his Ohio State jersey. If I still wear my Tim Couch jersey does that mean we should bring him back? Worst argument ever.

calm down guy....he was just being a fan...
anyways, i thought he is a FA now? isn't he? if not then i wouldn't want to give up picks for him either. And i'm a HUUUUUUGEEEE Troy Smith fan. If he is a FA, i think we would be foolish not to bring him in. especially if we won't have DA or Quinn going into the next season...if we have only one of them left, then why not Smith? we sure as hell won't be drafting QB in the 1st round...at least i hope not.

I'd love to give him a shot in the Brown and Orange.

Abso-freaking-lutely.
This is a professional sports franchise, not a half-way house for college man-crushes. The player in question either fits the team or he doesn't. Period. End of story.
If the player is talented enough and fits the team, then he will be looked at. What his name is and where he went to school and which team he is a fan of means precisely ZERO.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

It depends, I'd trade a 5th rounder for him at least. He's probabaly better then the clowns we have at QB right now He's an accurate, mobile QB with a pro arm that excelled operating a form of the WCO at OSU

If he didn't cost much in terms of cash and/or picks, sure... why not give him a chance?

I would like to have Troy Smith to take a look at, what I have seen of Troy with B more I have liked. Maybe he just needs to be somewhere to get his shot.

I'm dreaming of a Triple Option Cubed offense ... Troy at QB, Tebow at FB, Cribbs at RB ... any of 'em can throw ... any of 'em can run ... NFL D-Coord's would be crapping peach-pits.
Then I wake up ...

I would bring Smith in... I think he is pretty underrated... Not sure if he would be the next McNabb/ Vick / Cunningham, but I'd like him better than Anderson.. lol.

Not sure what it would take to bring him in, but I wouldnt be against it. Anything except Trent Dilfer is better than DA.

RFA? OK make him an offer. I'm very generous with Randys money. Three things might happen and two of them are good. We get him and hes at least competent. The Rats match and it costs them money. We get him and he sucks. I can't believe he'd be much worst than the 65 yds per game QBs we got now.

How about Art Schlichter or Kirk Herbstreit?
If we're going to go with mediocre at QB, we might as well go with who we have.
I can see it when Smith is 35 or so years old. Ammo will want to bring him in so he can finish his career with the Browns, and Ammo can finally buy a Troy Smith Browns jersey. Actually, on second thought, I'm thinking that by 35 years old, Troy Smith will have been out of football for quite some time.

Just Clicking,,
I don't see Smith as either a long term or short term answer... I have no problem with him wanting to play for his hometown team.. but I don't see how he really helps us. I'd rather get a rookie in the 2nd or 3rd and just live with Quinn until the rook is ready (if ever) .
I'm no QB guru,, so no way am I sure of that.. But just sayin,, I don't see a fit.

I'm just curious how those comments are going to play for Smith in the Ravens locker room? Sure the guy is wanting a trade, but there may be no takers and publicly popping off about how much you'd love to play for a division rival just doesn't seem like a really wise choice.

I don't think you "ignore" anything. But from all indications he's not a pure NFL type QB. So as with anybody you "consider", if the price aligns itself with the role he might play "wildcat QB", you must always give these things consideration.
As much as we as fans overate, develop man crushes ( which I most certainly think you have done reading your Troy Smith posts over the years ) or admire certain players, the bottom line is the NFL is a business.
So IF his price would align itself with the contributions he may add to the team, you would think it would be considered. jmho
Edit: And even that would hinge to some extent as to how negotiations go with Josh Cribbs. See we already have a wildcat QB. So a lot of factors will be considered.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

That's the whole problem with this crap to begin with--aligning price to the value "he might add,.."
It ought to be pay the man for what he's delivered, AFTER he performs,....
If Troy Smith really wants to be a Cleveland Brown, then he'll find a way. In the meantime, he's only going to do it at HIS price.
Same as Quinn holding out.
We didn't have this "negotiation" problem with Kosar.

While he hasn't shown me he can be a starter, he hasn't shown me that he CAN'T be a starter.
He has a rocket arm, accuracy, mobility and tremendous leadership qualities.
I fully trust Holmgren to get the QB situation right, so if he doesn't come here it'll be with a reason...but I'm willing to hedge my bets that he succeeds in the NFL.

He was set to start before getting the flu...thus Joe Flacco got the job and the rest is history.
