Cleveland Browns Cap room: $26.2 million Romeo Crennel and general manager Phil Savage will be operating with a ghost hovering over them. Bill Cowher is available. Although Cowher says he wants to sit out two seasons, he could be lured away from his new North Carolina home for the chance to get full power in Cleveland. The whole organization has its future at stake this season. The first two years under Crennel have been disastrous. Owner Randy Lerner isn't happy. Neither are the fans. The defensive front seven is aging. Cornerback Gary Baxter is coming off two major knee operations and probably will be cut. Right tackle Ryan Tucker has been battling an undisclosed mental disorder. Center LeCharles Bentley suffered a bad knee injury and developed an infection. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards is a loose cannon and has off-the-field concerns. Tight end Kellen Winslow is talented but not a great downfield threat because of his knee problem. Quarterback Charlie Frye continues to get pounded behind a poor offensive line. The Browns could get lucky and have Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn fall to them. They have only eight free agents, including three offensive linemen -- Cosey Coleman, Hank Fraley and Lennie Friedman. Unless there is a big jump with this team, Lerner may be pushing a lot of people out of the door. web page

I knew Braylon was a "loose cannon", but what are the off the field concerns that Poindexter is talking about?

John Clayton, as soon as I saw that name I knew his comments would be nothing but harsh. I've got a feeling he grew up a Bengals or Steelers fan. On a side note...
"Cornerback Gary Baxter is coming off two major knee operations and probably will be cut"
If we cut Gary Baxter, we're going to take a major cap hit. He's only in the 2nd year of his deal and if we send him packing now, the prorated portion of his signing bonus (plus any other guaranteed money he's due to receive) will count against the cap as dead money. The hit would be at the very least 8.4 million and probably closer to 9. We could sign a major player with 9 million of that cap.. I seriously doubt we cut Baxter.

First this: Quarterback Charlie Frye continues to get pounded behind a poor offensive line.
Then: The Browns could get lucky and have Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn fall to them
Add the two together, and Brady Quinn would then be lucky enough to get pounded behind a poor o-line. Good luck would have Thomas available when we pick.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

Well, McGinnest is definately aging and a stop gap but our other linebackers are young, especially Wimbley and Jackson... but turkey neck probably didn't think about that before the pen went in motion.

I think the world of Cowher and I know he's one heck of a coach,,, But to give him full control,,,,, Hey, we've been down that road before and other teams have tried it.. It's rare that it works and I don't like to even think about it,,, not even for one second.
As for Braylons off field concerns,,,, What the heck are they?

I agree, get rid of Phil for Cowher?
No thanks, if we can keep Phil and get Cowher ( I have been saying NO WAY THIS HAPPENS, because it won't) I wouldn't mind.

Poindexter errr, uh, Clayton, Doesn't exactly know what he's talking about in this article obviously. I don't want Cowher period. And one thing he did get right was that the first 2 years under Crennel haven't been the most wonderful 2 years in my life.

While there are a few innaccuracies in this story, what do you expect the media to do? Give rave reviews to a team that's flopping miserably? To get respect, you have to earn respect. And I don't see any indication that this team has. How is it some of you guys say it????? "It's all about keeping it REAL."
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Yeah, and I'm proud of both! The way I lived my youth? I should have been dead several times over by the time I was 25. So I've been breathing a sigh of relief for decades now.

Clayton is a Steelers fan...I've read and heard that he's on Pittsburgh Sports Radio weekly. I agree with you that he is clueless like the vast majority of Stealer trash, err I mean fans.

So he's been clueless about us the past 4 years?
I'll listen to the media about how much we suck until proven otherwise. I'm sick of calling the media stupid and wrong when they've made us look like fools the past 4 years.

At least we would be going down that road with somebody who has already PROVEN he can do at least one of the two jobs.. Butch had never proven he could coach at this level or be a GM at this level and we asked him to do both?
With that said, I don't understand why Cowher would WANT full control. The guy retired to spend time with his family... so why come back, not only to take a 70 hour per week coaching job but to have to handle GM duties on top of that? That doesn't really make sense to me....

I think being late to meetings and chartering a helicopter to the OSU-Mich game would be considered off the field concerns. His attitude is just not the attitude of a winner. Could change but he'll need a kick in the pants.

Lets not forget that this is the same chucklehead who was wondering why we were starting Charlie Frye instead of Kelly Holcomb midway through the season.

I don't think he is saying anything crazy. It's just the typical homer nonsense. The Browns were 4 and 12 last year. The Browns are picking 3rd or 4th, and lost to the team they are tied with in a blowout loss in Cleveland, out of 32 teams in the NFL draft The Browns were 6 and 10 the previous year. 4 and 12 the year before that, and 5 and 11 before that. The Browns change coaches more than 5th graders change their underwear. The homers act like the media is crazy for bashing the Browns?

These politics won't win games. REALLY tired of folks lining up to tell us what needs fixed. We know. We need some better talent for better coaches to show thru true. I think great players make great coaches. BQ is not the savior and won't walk across Lake Erie to get to Berea. And he will get pounded unless some splurge is made for some solid OL proven FA's. Then we can get down to some football. Da Browns gotta fly! Straighten out this train wreck

Ah Clayton...spoken like a true Steeler fan. Nothing new from him. I liked this tid bit.
"The defensive front seven is aging." Could have sworn I saw us draft Defensive front seven 1, 2 - in the 2006 draft...wait we did and both started. We got AD who is fairly young as well as the 4th rounder from 06 Leon Williams.
Yes, we know, Savage knows...he hasn't bee able to invest in DL w/the draft yet. Last I looked that was the lesser half of the D front 7.
The way he talks its ready to crumble...its never been built yet to crumble, that is the DL and the LB crew who is more than half the unit of D7 was well invested in with youth...last year.
This guy always ignores and understates any positives with this team and overstates any negative we possibly have.

clayton is anti-cleveland, when it's bad, he pours it on...
but in that little tidbit, i agree with everything he says...
i don't like the idea of kicking people out the door, but i do think that is what may happen... watching other teams turn around quickly doesn't sit well with ownership, even though i'd like to see romeo get a fair shot when he has his kind of players at every defensive position, and having some semblance of an offense, which isn't romeo's fault...

Yeah looks to me like keeping the contract/ business side out of the coaching/ football side is not that easy. I like the 2 man GM & Coach concept much better than the all knowing football guru model.

the thing I love the most about Clayton is he looks like the closest he ever came to playing football was when they used him as the ball .. *LOL* .. this guy appears to have ZERO ATHELETIC ABILITY ... he should wear a pocket protector in his shirt pocket with his pens and pencils in it and write code for some military software programs ... he'd look the part at least .. *L* with that said ... he was definelty negative and he could have mentioned we have some good young players ... but the only thing that WASN'T 100% TRUE was the aging front 7 .... its actually only 4 out of 7 .. BIG WHIP .. everythign else though harsh is DEAD NUTS ACCURATE ... especially the part about us being LUCKY if BQ falls to us ... hes one smart proggrammer ...

Agreed moe, I don't think it's really ever in the best interest of a team to give complete control to one person. I much prefer the GM and Coach strategy over just one guy calling all the shots.

Oh Clayton is clever, make no mistake about that. But he doesn't like the Browns...the Browns fans (we have insulted him mercilessly with emails over the last 8-9 years).
He will rarely lie or make up stuff so that you got to say...I agree with everything he says. But note, he embellishes on those negatives. He will not expound on any positives.

That I can agree with, but on balance, he isn't wrong in his view of the team.
These guys always do that with the crap teams. Until a team actually starts to make a turn, they just point out what is wrong in their opinion and move on to the teams the bulk of the readers want to read about.
As Browns fans, we know our team, but you start asking non-fans and they couldn't care less about the Browns and their problems. All they know is they stink.

"I don't see how you can rip the guy for saying our front 7 is aging."
sorry didn't mean to rip your idol...lol
1. I explained quite clearly - for a smart guy you don't see a lot of things...
2. Aging - anything in the NFL equates to something that was built and now those studs are just about to fall out of any further use. But we never did build the DL, if he just spent 45 minutes to educate himself on the Browns and listened to the Savage presser "State of the Browns Address" and actually new anything. He would have known that Savage full knows and understands the DL is a unit he simply has not attended to yet...as in didn't BUILD IT YET.
He simply saw Ted Washington and Willie McG and glommed that statement on the entire unit. So Chicken Littles can go around and say...ITs TRUE!!! ITS TRUE!!!
I actually think its quite humorous how he can be the KING of the Chicken Little Fan club...lol if anyone fit the role better

Cowher is a burn out. Frankly he should win worst coach of the year honors. I have always been a fan of Cowher but man he drew a paycheck for nothing this year and all the red zone passing was absurd.
As for Romeo and Savage. Savage better hit some serious homeruns in this draft and also in free agency cause hiring the O staff for Romeo he basicly set himself up for a lot of heat if things go bad.
Romeo, his only chance is to really get the defense playing lights out football. But honestly, I think Randy Lerner has given both that last opportunity, just like he gave Butch. One more try to get it going in the right direction.
If Romeo goes and Phil stays, Rex Ryan will be the next coach of the Browns. Randy likes him and Phil spent most of his time at Alabama yapping with him. I was surprised we didnt hire him this year.
