In a radio interview Monday, Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson made three things perfectly clear (everything else was up for interpretation):

* One, he was not happy playing for the Chargers last season.
* Two, he wants to return to San Diego, the place he has called home since being drafted in 2002.
* Three, if he does return to the Chargers, it won’t come at a reduced rate.

“It’s never been about the money,” Tomlinson said on 1090-AM in San Diego. “I love the game of football. It’s all about being happy. Being happy and enjoying playing. That’s the most important part to me. Also being happy and chasing that Super Bowl.”

Changes in offensive philosophy, namely the reduction of running plays called by coach Norv Turner to emphasize the passing game, made last season frustrating for Tomlinson, who rushed for 730 yards on 223 carries, the least productive season of his career. Previously, he had never rushed for fewer than 1,100 yards.

Tomlinson is still under contract with the Chargers for another two years, so it would take a trade (a distinct possibility) or being waived to alter his whereabouts in 2010. A year ago, he agreed to restructure the final three years of his deal and take a pay cut. He says he won’t take another in order to stay with the Chargers.

Tomlinson, who feels he has a 1,500-yard season still left in him, was asked about where he thought he’d be next season.

“I’m not really sure,” he said. “I can see a lot of things. … I just kind of leave it open. … I spent a lot of years here and still enjoy football a lot and enjoy being around the guys in the locker room.

“I want a championship,” he added, “and I’m going to chase it.”

Only question now is, will it be in San Diego?

NFL.com

Tomlinson is washed up. I know he's washed up. You know he's washed up. The Chargers know he's washed up. The only person that doesn't know he's washed up is him.

Tomlinson will now leave the Chargers and be what Edgerrin James was for the Cardinals last year, Emmitt Smith was for the Cardinals in his last year, Shaun Alexander for the Redskins, Jamal Lewis for us this season etc. A nobody.

Tomlinson literally can't start for any team in the NFL right now. And I would have a problem with him being the #2 on most teams as well. The only thing he can still do is block the pass rush.

I agree with everything you said.....but, he's still better than Julius Jones, so he could start for the Seahawks

(note: I expect CJ Spiller to be taken by Seattle...really hoping at #6 to drop someone to us, but most likely at #14)

Good for him. It will speed the end of a career that is hardly a dazzler anymore. Still, using the media always sucks. Usually only by those who aren't talking to the front office folks, or to whom the fron office folks arent speaking. So you toss a net hoping an enraged audience will go to werk for you. He may well talk himself out of a job. If he still has one with them 'Boltses.

He shouldn't have to take a pay cut. He's under contract for another two years. Nobody forced the Chargers to offer him the deal that they did.

...not really replying to you, just starting my thought after something you said.

Well, he doesn't have to take a pay cut....they'll just cut him (which is within the rules of the semi-existing CBA).

So, this is the other side of the Cribbs-wanting-a-new-deal coin. Cribbs is out-performing his deal, doesn't want to honor it anymore, the Browns want to keep the contract and they also want to keep him happy. So, who's right? The Chargers know LT isn't worth his cap number, LT knows it, the deal goes two more years, and the Chargers will lower it or cut him. So who's right?

It's all legal within this CBA for each side to crap on the contract. So, don't worry who's right or wrong....just accept it and move on.

I would like to see him just retire. He had a great career. Like most running backs, when it starts to go downhill, it GOES FAST. It was only a few years ago that I thought he was still amazing. Now.....I'd probably keep Harrison and Jennings over the guy. He's just old, slow, and never did squat in the playoffs.

Well Justin Forsett would probably be the starter in Seattle now. So take them off the list.

Forsett is their Harrison though....a lot of people thinking he can't handle the load over the long 16 game season.

If Portis is out in Washington, I could see him going there, zone blocking etc.

I could see him signing with the Cheifs just to get back at the chargers. If they don't feel Charles can carry it alone.

Hell find a place, they always do.

Imagine if he went to Seattle. It would be washed up running back central. First Shaun Alexander, then Edgerrin James, now Tomlinson. Yikes!

it's a shame they didn't sign Emmitt after his AZ year...

and maybe they could lure Jamal out of his trucking company retirement for a day or two....

I'll be surprised that Seattle takes a shifty speed back when they have one that performed well on the roster already this past season - Justin Forsett. Seattle doesn't need another change of pace back/speed back, they need a bigger back and they need to dump Jones.

Tomlinson is washed up. I know he's washed up.

I know differently.

I've watched the Chargers a bunch over the last two years. Tomlinson isn't the same guy he was three years ago, but he's not the washed-up bum many think he is.

The Chargers have two legitimate offensive linemen who can run block, and three bums who can't.

People absolutely knew Lewis was washed up three years ago in Baltimore, and three years ago I'd noted how poorly their line was blocking. He wasn't the same guy that ran for 2000 yards in a season, but he wasn't finished. He came here and played behind a solid line, and suddenly he wasn't washed-up anymore.

The difference between Lewis of 2007 and Tomlinson of 2010 is that LT isn't the one-dimensional back that Lewis has been for years. He's an elite blocker from the RB position, and even if he's lost half-a-step, he hasn't suddenly forgotten how to catch the ball. Remember that those are the same hands which caught no less than 50 balls a year between 2001 and 2008.

As a split-carries guy he brings great value to any team.

I'd made this same argument a month-or-so ago, making sure to warn people to keep an eye on this situation. Well, it looks like LT is going to take the same route that so many great backs have taken when their run as Grand Poobah's on their specific teams has ended.

Most backs in his situation have to move on to be reinvigorated. They go from being the "old guy who doesn't have it anymore" to being "the new guy that brings so much experience and ability to our situation."

We need a back to pair with Harrison. LT would be the perfect guy.

it depends on if Seattle thinks CJ Spiller can be Chris Johnson or not.

or if CJ Spiller reminds Carroll of Reggie Bush in college and wants to emulate that role with him.

Seeing as ya know "money doesn't matter" to him.

What reasons would he have to come here?

The best situation I see for him is if Westbrook retires, he could fit right in, on a playoff team.

I actually like the guys we got. And LT is no garuntee. Regardless of what happened with Lewis.

I disagree. Like you I've watched quite a few Charger games over these past few years.

Unlike you, I think Tomlinson is totally 100% done. This year, as a split carry back, he averaged 3.3 yards per carry. Yes, it was behind an average offensive line. But it was also in one of the most successful pass offenses in the league, there should have been some running lanes there for him.

Also, in crunch time in the past two playoffs Tomlinson has been riding the pine.

Yes, Lewis was considered washed up when he left Baltimore. He was also 27 years old when he left Baltimore. Tomlinson will be 31 when the 2010 season starts. Lewis had 1,822 career carries when he left Baltimore. Tomlinson currently has, wait for it....2,880 career carries.

I do agree with one thing you said. Tomlinson can still block, as I stated in my original post, so he is good for something. And yes he can still catch. But he really can't do anything once he gets the ball in his hands. I'd much rather spend a 4th round pick on Stafon Johnson (a running back who lays the wood on pass rushers) then sign a washed up Tomlinson, who will probably sulk through the season if he isn't getting sufficient carries.

As the original article states, "Tomlinson, who believes he has a 1,500-yard season still left in him". You don't get to be a 1,500 yard rusher being a split-carry back. Tomlinson believes he can still carry the ball 30 times a game a be successful. Let him try and do that elsewhere.

Calling that offensive line average is doing them a great favor, hehe.

Furthermore, Sproles is a young back, yet he averaged only 3.7 behind that same "average" line.

Being a great passing team doesn't make for a great running team.

It's actually counter-intuitive to believe great passing teams wouldn't be good running teams, but in many cases that's exactly what happens.

The Dan Marino Dolphins were never good running teams, and in order to keep this shorter, the Colts who are in the Super Bowl are an absolutely pathetic running team.

I do agree that the carries on LT's body indicate he's nearing the end, but you and I see two very different backs. You see a washed-up guy who can't make people miss. I see a guy who can be this generations Marcus Allen, who splits carries and comes in on 3rd down, where he's more blocker/receiver than rusher.

To the question as to why someone like LT would come here, that's a question that people always ask of any player, yet we land our share of free agents. The odds are long that he'd come here, but if offered a good situation to start and the right money, Cleveland is as good a bet as anywhere.

If his desire is to win a Super Bowl, then a team like the Eagles or Texans is more appealing than we are. If the desire is to walk into a situation where he stands a good chance of taking over the lion's share of the carries, well, Harrison isn't exactly going to be considered the best or most reliable starter in the league.

There's reason why LT would consider coming here.

I always thought the world of LT.. Great player and by all accounts a solid guy off the field as well,,

But I think I'd like to see what we have in Davis... I think we know what we have in Harrison.. Virturally every time we've given him the carries, he's come through for us.., I'd like to see that continue.. if Davis is real,, then I just don't think spending money on LT,, done or not, is worth it. JMO however.

Again, I agree with you, he can block and catch the ball. What he does with the ball after he catches it is my concern. I say he runs three yards and gets tackled.

Tomlinson's reasoning for wanting to play don't really match up.

1. He doesn't want reduced pay. But also doesn't care about money.

2. He wants to win a Super Bowl. But it also seems like he wants to be an every down back. Any team that has Tomlinson as an every down back probably won't be competing for any Super Bowl

Also, another point. When Marcus Allen was done playing his 16 year career he had 3,022 carries. Only 142 more than Tomlinson has right now after only 9 seasons.

Don't we still have Jennings too?

If someone would have told me mid-season that people were okay with the trio of Harrison, Jennings, and Davis going to next season I would probably be doing this...

But now, I think I would be okay with having those three going into next season. Would I be extremely happy if we could add a player like Jahvid Best, Toby Gerhart, Javarris James, Stafon Johnson, or Ben Tate. Yes. But it is definitely not a must.

Well, Jennings has a special place in my heart, and forever will, because of that rushing TD against the Steelers. Shoot....a lot of players gained a ton of respect from me for that game alone.

This begins to go down the psychological aspect of humanity, involving traits such as pride and desire.

He doesn't care about money. I believe him, in respect to feeling as though he has to earn more to have enough to last. So how could he not care about money, yet care about money?

The answer is pride. Taking a paycut represents not a loss of money, but a self-perceived loss of respect.

LT, like many players in his position, feel as though they've earned the extra money not because they are producing like they have in the past, but because they feel they've earned it for services rendered to the organization.

So in this regard LT is telling the truth when he says he both does and does not care about money. Many athletes aren't articulate enough or honest enough to express it well-enough.

Quote:

I doubt he'd be so selfish as to come right out and say his line isn't very good at run-blocking. That would be wrong on numerous levels, and he doesn't strike me as that kind of person. Besides, what's wrong with wanting both? Many feel that he isn't a feature-back anymore, but undoubtedly there are some that do, and of course he himself feels that he can still be a full-time back. I think he'd be more effective than several starters currently in the league, even in his current condition of not being the same guy he was two years ago when he had "only" 2300 carries, hehe.

Quote:

While true, one could argue that the level of physical fitness some 14 years later is much better than it was then, while also noting how much younger LT is in terms of age. If Allen was still capable of contributing at his advanced stage in his career, then LT can as well.

I don't feel that LT can be what he was, or even that he's a decent gamble as a full-time starter. However, as a guy who can take 100 carries a year and be a rock as a 3rd down back? Yeah, I think he easily has that in him.

We've both had our opinion. I won't keep on just repeating myself. What I will do is say the same thing I stated when Lewis was leaving the Rats:

The player isn't the same guy he was, but he's still good. He played behind a bad line making him look worse. On a different team, you'll see a different player, a player who'll remind everyone of a guy who looked eerily similar to him but in different colors.

If you're asking what his trade value is, $5 million is a bunch to pay for a guy if you're not going to make him the 20-carry per game guy, and I don't know if there's a team out there willing to take that gamble, considering he comes with a $6 million dollar salary for 2011.

However, for a team like the Pats, who sent a 4th rounder for Moss, I'd say a 3rd or 4th would be appropriate. Teams on the threshhold of the Super Bowl every year can afford to spend those kinds of picks on short-term players.

I apologize if these things have already been said, I haven't read the entire thread. He's not happy playing for the Chargers last season... but wants to return. They were one of the best teams in the league, and he wasn't happy? That's absurd. Then he goes on to say that it's not about the money, but then asserts he won't play for a reduced salary?

I'm a fan of LT, the football player, but I have serious doubts about his character.

Check what I said a few posts up about the psyche of a player in LT's position. It'll shed some light on the situation.

I wonder in 10 years what NFL contracts will be like.

They just keep getting bigger, and at no point do I see a way for it to stop, or even level off.

Mannings ganna be a 15-20 mil A YEAR guy soon, peppers just made what 16 this year?

Eventually it has to stop inflating, right?

I understand LT thinks he's worth a bazillion dollars, that's the problem with sports in general.

Well, there's two of us in this club,...most people don't think this is a problem. If I live long enough, I predict one day I will give up on "professional" sports leisure, at this rate.

It's just like everything else,

It's gets bigger & bigger until it explodes and it starts all over again.

It could easily get to a point where teams fold and the leauge folds if spending isnt controlled,

At some point in time it will stop expanding - the paychecks, that is.

But, I have this sneaky suspicion before that happens we'll see all games only on pay per view (Sunday ticket from Direct TV for example), and we'll see corporate sponsorship on the uni's, and maybe even teams, ala the Indianapolis Citibank Colts vs. the Cincy Toyota Bengals.

Ticket prices will increase, right up until NO stadium sells out - forcing people to, if they want to see the game, spend $20 or so to get it on t.v. since they won't want to afford the $80 game tickets.

Won't surprise me if there is some system that will detect how many people are in your living room watching the game - and they'll charge you based on that.

Well, that's a bleak, negative forecast of the future of professional football in the US. I don't see the NFL ever being that dumb.

I think they'll eventually take the games off local and cable TV and move them to an expanded NFL Network (with subscription). And to me, that's fine. I don't like how Directv has a monopoly on all the games. So, any situation where I can pay for all the Browns games and not have to swtich to DTV, good.

As long as the TV revenue money grows, so will the players paychecks. It's only fair. And I've never really understood why people care that P.Manning makes $15-20m versus $10-20m or $25-30m. If the checks aren't bouncing, it's within the cap (or if we don't have one) then owner must have enough cash in the bank. This is a multi-billion dollar industry....and we're sweating a guy making millions. Nobody seems to worry about how much the owner is pulling in.

I think you hit right there on the team he'll end up with if he's cut - the Houston Texans.

LT is a Texas native, so there would definitely be interest on his part geographically. The Texans are a pass happy system, so LT would be allowed to play to his strengths (blocking and receiving) and he's still a solid goal line back, which the Texans sorely lack. Plus, with Slaton having neck surgery, his immediate future is up in the air but Kubiak isn't the kind of guy who spends big draft picks on running backs. It would let LT get a lot of carries while only being a short term fix until they get Slaton's issues under control.

I just can't see him signing onto a team like Cleveland. We're at least a year if not two from contending and signing here would be a literal death sentence for any Super Bowl hopes. I can't imagine he'd sign somewhere unless the team was at least playoff worthy. Our front office has a history of using Day 2 (Rounds 2-3) picks to build their running game and I can't imagine they would deviate from that.

LT finally faces reality: He's gone
Posted by Evan Silva on February 4, 2010 5:17 PM ET
In a Thursday interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune, Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson acknowledged the inevitable.

He's played his last down as a Charger.

"I'm not coming back," Tomlinson said. "I've accepted it."

LT's release will likely take place between March 1st and 4th. His $2 million roster bonus is due on the 5th.

"It's a mixed feeling," Tomlinson said when asked his thoughts on being released by the team he's played his whole career for. "It's mixed emotions. I've spent nine years of my life here, pretty much my youth. I gave the organization everything I have. But there is a part I won't miss. The football part is fun. But the business part sucks. I won't miss that."

Tomlinson will close out his Chargers career with 12,490 rushing yards, the eighth most in league history, and 153 all-purpose touchdowns.

Going on age 31 and coming off a season in which he averaged 3.27 yards per carry, though, his free agent stock will be very limited.

Just an unfitting end to his career there.. But I understand it.

The San Diego Chargers started morphing into Philip Rivers' team the past two seasons. It's now completely his.

I kind of miss the days where a guy (with few exceptions) was a member of a certain team for his entire career.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
