As long as the TV revenue money grows, so will the players paychecks. It's only fair. And I've never really understood why people care that P.Manning makes $15-20m versus $10-20m or $25-30m. If the checks aren't bouncing, it's within the cap (or if we don't have one) then owner must have enough cash in the bank. This is a multi-billion dollar industry....and we're sweating a guy making millions. Nobody seems to worry about how much the owner is pulling in.
My point is, you have Steve Buscotti, owner of the Ravens, claiming that clubs can barely break even.
Yet you can Jim Irsay openly stating their going to blow their wallets on Manning.
Why do contracts have to esculate? Does Peyton Manning need 20 million a year for the next 3-5 years?
Antione Walker is basically broke, he's made millions over his career, its all gone, the athlete lifestyle, and the hords of "family" members that had their hands out.
Branding Jennings gets joked on in the locker room because he bought an economically friendly car, and isn't rolling on spinners with gold plated rims.
I need to stop talking as Ill just go on and on.
Basically, its all the owners fault, they sign the contracts, they spend the money, and now like every bank in america, they're looking for help to fix their mistakes.
Hopefully we don't have to pay for them with a lockout.

ala the Indianapolis Citibank Colts vs. the Cincy Toyota Bengals.
Cool. and then the Bengals won't be able to get going and when they do get going they don't when to stop... and they'll be recalled.

It's not just the owners,, it's the agents as well..
Everyone has thier hands out..
But honestly.,, I know we are hearing about this potential lock out all the time now.. Does anyone think for one second that either side will let it get that far?
I don't..

Absolutely, I firmly believe that the owners are prepared for it and have BEEN preparing for it since they signed the deal in '06. I believe that they've been socking away money as they can, and I do believe that there is an entire pool of existing talent just across our northern border.

I don't think the contracts of the Peyton Mannings of the league are getting that is hurting it, it's the top 5 picks in every draft that are being paid huge contracts with no reason other than supposed potential.
A rookie cap would be the most efficient and sensible way to keep the economics of the team stable. Quality proven players make the big contracts, rookies and "potential" stars earn their contracts thru a couple years of high level performance.
IMO teams that year in and year out have top picks in the draft are often saddle with big contracts to unproven players. If a team misses a couple of times, they are basically paying a big percentage of their cap space to a player worth much less. They also have a hard time trying to trade the player due to a high contract and cap hit.
I believe a player drafted should get a decent but reasonable contract for two years. After that point, their performance should be used to negotiate a more lucrative contract, with the drafting team getting first choice.
Pipe dream, I know, but IMO it would solve a lot of headaches, and check a lot of young players egos.

No, it's not the owners. If there's anything remotely resembling an agreement to keep salaries down, they can be sued for collusion. So says the Supreme Court.

So if noone gives Albert Haynesworth 100 million then they're all going to jail?

He's probably right about commitment and all that, but in this case the fact that he isn't the focal point of the team anymore may have had something to do with his assessment. Whatever, I think he just shot his way out of town. Wait 'til he sees the lucrative offers pour in (not).

imagine a team/owner having to pay Ryan Leaf or his equivalent millions upon millions for years.
Draft busts can ruin a team for years. There has to be some kind of recourse for the team.

Yeah,...like NOT having to pay big money up front in the first place would be a good start,... Rookie-based salaries for two years (with some performance clauses), then a renegotiation allowance/plan of some type.

One quick note:
Calling SD's Oline average is a favor, BUT....
LT's 3.3 yards and Sproles 3.7 yards ARE very different. They may look the same, but Sproles is literally a scoring threat every time he touches the ball. LT is not.
I see your argument that the oline blocked crappy for both, but comparing to the two backs is silly.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
