Browns Release Jamal Lewis Jamal Lewis By John Taylor Posted Feb 17, 2010 | More Three-year Cleveland career of running back comes to an unceremonious end as Browns terminate Lewis' contract... In a move that’s not all that surprising, the Cleveland Browns announced today that they had terminated the contract of running back Jamal Lewis. “I enjoyed getting to know Jamal and having the opportunity to coach him last season,” said Browns head coach Eric Mangini said in a statement. “We want to thank him for his contributions to the Cleveland Browns and wish him nothing but the best moving forward. I’m sure he will be successful in whatever he decides to pursue.” Lewis posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2007 and 2008 as the club’s leading rusher, but injuries limited his production in what turned out to be his final season in a Browns uniform in 2009. Lewis had announced earlier in the 2009 season that it would be his last in the NFL, but he seemed to back off that stance by the end of the year. So, if he does continue what could be a Hall of Fame career, it will be somewhere other than Cleveland thanks to the team’s announcement this afternoon. web page Good bye Twinkle Toes!

I would wish him ggod luck, but lost all respect for him when he said he was a Raven while wearing the Browns uniform. I know the Ravens were the team he had his career with, but I find it disrespectful towards the Browns the way he did it. So long pitty pat, your retirement came a year late IMO.

This is great news. Now we can finally move on with the running back position.
I can't wait to see the Harrison/Jennings/Davis combo for a full season. Maybe even add someone new to spice things up.

Oh, he's been focused on that plenty of late.
We got one good year out of him even though he was nearing the end. He ended up getting one more year's worth of money than he should have, but he was a decent signing.
In terms of the present, I'm damned glad he's gone.

Enter James Davis.
Davis excites me, and if we are going to have a similar QB situation to the one we had this year, we better get ourselves a dependable RT somewhere to insure an edge in the running game.
If our O-Line blocks well, a combo of Harrison and Davis could be decent. Harrison deserves his shot, he earned that with the way he finished last season. Harrison is different than your average scat back because he is good at running between the tackles. Harrison is shifty, has good vision, and Harrison can run on all points of the field. I think he can continue to be productive, but we are going to have to make sure that he holds up.
Davis is in his 2nd year and showed quite a bit of promise last year before getting injured. With Jennings or some other guy that's better than him at the number 3 spot, we might be able to run the ball pretty well.

Despite Jamal Lewis only giving us one really good season, he has had a lasting effect on our running backs.
Jerome Harrison's work ethic is probably almost exclusively from Lewis. So we can be very thankful for that.
Thanks for giving it your all, Jamal, despite not being very good.
you had a good run Hank.

How ever ppl feel towards JL as a person or the fact he came from the Ratbirds....
I cant say much bad things about his play... 1000 yds was more enjoyable to watch than 500...

He may have gotten a thousand, but they were the of the Droughns variety. 1,500 yds were there and he got 1,000. He was a bum, wished we had never gotten him. He hit the hole so soft the last 2 years it was painful to watch. Maybe he can take his NFL dance moves to dancing with the stars.

Stats are for losers.. Remember that
You are entitled to your opinion, but you won't find many that totally agree with you. We picked him up towards the end of his career.. I believe with all my heart he gave what he had until this last season..We kept in one year to many IMO,, But he certainly was no bum...

Rbs are a dime a dozen. Its the easiest position to transition into in the NFL. He stunted the growth and development of other rbs on our team, how many of us for the past 3 season have been screaming for more harrison touches? He may have been a "leader" in the locker room, but the bum has done nothing to endure himself to the Cleveland fan base. He should have been gone after the 2007 season and let a younger more explosive, harder runner, faster, better catching, etc.... come in and actually get more than 2 yds a carry. Sorry, outside of a few games (esp towards the end of the season) in 2007, he was nothing but mediocre at best. Sorry but I saw nothing on or off the field that made me like him/think he was a good pick up. Should have drafted a rookie or let our younger guys. We are worse off for not doing it IMO bc we have so many unknowns at the rb position now bc of the FO and Coaches refusal of playing them over a veteran.
edit: Also on a side note, Stats are not for losers, they help tell the tale. Lewis didnt pass the stat or eye test though, so a total FAIL on him for that one.

Really,, I hear that alot yet if you look around, lots of teams don't have a GREAT RB.. why is that if they are that easy to find.

You are blaming the wrong guy.. You blame the player when he's NOT the guy that decides who starts and plays...
Blame the coaching staff or the GM or whatever.. But Players don't decide if they are starting ahead of someone else.
I stopped reading your post after that.. wasn't neccessary, I know your stance and you are entitled to it,, don't really care enough to try and change your mind...,
And with him being gone, it's a wasted conversation..

just clicking...
Rather than be petty and besmirch the man for things he may have done against us or didn't do for us.....
I will prefer to remember him for some of the things he did for us....
Like the MONSTER game he had vs Cincinnati.....or the TD at at the end of the game vs the Jets. I prefer to remember the person who took other players under his wing in the offseason and showed them how to REALLY stay in shape...
Some say he did nothing to endear himself to Cleveland Fans...I say those fans aren't looking.
Good Luck Jamal in what ever you do. I thank you for the good you did bring. As for the bad...it is what it is...I will forget it if you will...
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

I don't know about GREAT RB's being easy to find but STARTING RB's seem to be pretty available through FA or trades. Some just off the top of my head:
Portis Ricky Williams M Turner Thomas Jones McGahee Benson L Johnson J Jones Fred Taylor L jordon Willy Parker (UDFA?) C Buckhalter Graham D Ward
That's 14 without thinking too hard. None of them were blockbuster trades either. All we signed pretty affordably.

You boy's feel better now???
Are you vindicated?
Boy you guy's really showed him.....
And you really got him with that mis-quoted cliche.... "and get leave"....Really???
I mean you are more than welcome to your opinions...ok Lewis isn't the equivalent of Bernie Kosar in our eyes....but come on???? The Jim Rome wanna be comments????(and why would you wanna be like that douche???)
The guy is gone...he helped us at times, and he also held us back at times...but unless he goes out and starts some stuff......what is the purpose of the mud slinging??? Be happy he is no longer holding us back and be done with it...

One good season from him doesn't negate the fact that he was a total embarrassment to the Browns franchise and they're fans....sorry I'm just not that desperate.
I've been following the Browns waaay too long to allow a character like JL to walk away from this team with even an ounce of respect. Like someoine else already posted,....he'll probably sign a one day contract to retire as a rat,...and when he does,..be prepared for him to throw more stones at the Browns. I want the locker room to consist of players who are proud to be Cleveland Browns,....we are officially one step closer to that happening.

You really didn't read every one of my posts, did you PETE? They're dripping w/ sarcasm by the end. Was saying Jamal deserved much more respect all along.
And yeah, I had a typo. Was starting to write it like Biff from Back to the Future: "Make like a tree and get out of here." Woops . . .
