Portis wasn't reasonable or cheap..came with a big price..

but I get your drift,.,

Remember, if a guy is good,, that's one thing, but if he's a starter because you don't have anyone better,, that's a different ball of wax....

One good season from him doesn't negate the fact that he was a total embarrassment to the Browns franchise and they're fans....sorry I'm just not that desperate.

I've been following the Browns waaay too long to allow a character like JL to walk away from this team with even an ounce of respect.

I want the locker room to consist of players who are proud to be Cleveland Browns,....we are officially one step closer to that happening.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you for this post. You get it. Awesome post/point!

Ditto; he didn't have a good season for "us." He did it for his own self, only.

Jerome Harrison's work ethic is probably almost exclusively from Lewis. So we can be very thankful for that.

Seems to me that it wasn't Lewis to thank for Harrison, but rather the head coach who wouldn't let him play until he started earning his paycheck.

Exactly. Seems to me all the crap about Lewis showing Jerome how to practice was all bull. IMO his comments to the press last year showed who Lewis really was. He may have played for the Browns, but he was no "Cleveland Brown"

I feel his comments to the media last year proved he was not the "locker room" guy most thought. He came here because noone else wanted him. He got the yards that HE needed for his legacy. I for one am glad he's gone.

I doubt he will,, he can be a very classless person at times. I doubt anyone questions that.

But in all honesty, I do believe he gave it everything he had until this past year when he seemed pretty disgruntled. Then he got hurt and BAM,, we were suddenly able to run the ball.... LOL

I wish him nothing but the best in his future...

Does releasing Lewis count against the Browns salary cap (OK, maybe not this year but in a normal year when they have a capped season)? Not that it matters because this season will most likely be uncapped. I was hoping he would just retire.

In a capped season, teams caps usually get hit with half a players salary this season and half the next when they release a player. Im not 100% sure on that. So this would be a good season to get rid of some big contracts that dont contribute. Like maybe DA. Cory Williams was making, I think $8 million to sit the bench but he did well when Rogers got hurt. But d-line depth was the only thing the defense had going for them last year.

He was going into the last year of his contract, so the only thing we could have gotten hit with was whatever prorated portion of his signing bonus hadn't been accounted for yet, while saving on whatever salary and incentive money there was.

I agree. I couldnt imagine being on an assembly line and get belittled like people do to athletes just because they are not up to their standards or expectations. JL put it all out on the field and did the best he could. Its not his fault that the team thought he was the best RB option available and signed him to that contract. Was he supposed to turn the money down? I dont think anyone would be accurate if they said JL didnt give 100% on the field and helping out his teammates. I also dont see how someone could hate on the guy after he told management that he would take a pay reduction to cover the contract of FB Charles Ali, which was a league minimum for an UDFA rookie. He liked Alis work ethic and thought he was going to be a cut in the numbers game because most teams dont keep two FBs. Ali made the team anyways because he was also a decent contributor on special teams.

Lewis is the exact opposite of a Dennis Northcutt. Northcutt was a player who complained and said he would never wear a Browns uniform. Then one day after he re-signed he took out the knee, of then rookie Sean Jones, after Jones made an int. Cutt said he was just trying to make a play. I dont see trying to take out a teammates knee on your first day of practice as "just trying to make a play". That resulted in Jones missing his rookie year and forced the team to use a second round pick at the same position. They drafted Pool. Cutt also took it upon himself to bash fellow teammates in the newspapers for holding calls (phantom calls IMO) that called back punt returns in consecutive games. He told the newspapers that plays like that should get a player cut. Which just happened to be called on Jones. Then Cutt went to the papers and bashed the coaches for not starting him because he claimed hes the vet that had the most time in, so he should be starting. This was when Edwards was a rookie and getting playing time. In return, on the first play from scrimmage against Denver, Frye passed a perfect pass on a WR screen that bounced off his chest and into a Denvers defenders arms for a TD. After that play, Cutt never saw time for the Browns in the offense the rest of the season, and was strictly a punt returner. And rightfully so.

Sorry about the Northcutt rant. He was one of my most disliked players that played for one of my favorite teams. Not bashing him but stating the facts. Lewis was not that kind of player or teammate.

I think (for the most part) JL, as a teammate, is alright. He's the definition of hard-working.

Yeah, he said some stuff... but I don't really blame him after being a part of this past season.

Fans can bash him for staying on a couple years too long and call him twinkle-toes to his face as he's packing up his locker (I, personally, don't advise doing this), but don't bash his locker-room presence or work ethic. Articles published during this season that painted him in a negative light are suspect, at best.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I don't have to hold my breath Toad, he treated everybody well while he was here, and he was treated well by the fans his first two years. JL is not a bad guy. His heart is in the right place.

the Browns org. got it right with Lewis, that is getting the maximum from a good player at the end of his career. He was signed as a FA and his first year with us was very good. Then one decent year and finally a slide into mediocrity. the writing was on the wall by mid-season.
The Browns just made his decision to retire easier.

I have no illusions that "homecoming" for JL will be in Ballmer.

HOF ? He was only an above average back with one full season sitting on the sidelines ( jail). He does not have enough black ink to warrant enshrinement IMO.

I think his 2000 yard season and 500 yards in 2 games against the Browns will be on his HOF credentials. He did make the all decade team. I think he deserves it. He had a longer career than Shaun Alexander and a Terrel Davis who were both dominate for 3 years.

I think that's incorrect. I think the reason he missed an entire season is due to a rather serious injury.. I don't think his "jail' time cause any missed games.. I'm not sure where to check that, but I seem to remember that his jail sentence started in like January and ran into either april or may.. I'm not even sure he missed any Training camp due to jail..
