Browns, Cribbs still have plenty of work to do

In response to the recent report from Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the Browns and receiver Josh Cribbs could work out a new contract by the end of next week, a source with knowledge of the situation tells us that, while such an outcome isn't impossible, it's not likely.

Talks are occurring, the source said, and progress has been made. But more work needs to be done in order to bridge the gap.

That said, meetings will occur next week in Indianapolis in conjunction with the Scouting Combine, and a breakthrough is possible.

Currently, Cribbs reportedly wants $10 million in guaranteed money, while the Browns reportedly have offered $5 million in "likely" guarantees. Per the source, the Browns are not yet at $5 million.

So stay tuned.

Cleveland Browns and Josh Cribbs' agents agree on all but guarantee
By Mary Kay Cabot
March 02, 2010, 6:10PM

CLEVELAND --The Browns and agents for receiver Josh Cribbs have agreed on everything but the guaranteed money in his new deal, a league source said.

If Browns President Mike Holmgren agrees to the latest proposal from Cribbs' agents on the guarantee, the deal will be done. If not, it will be up to Cribbs to decide if he wants to accept the Browns' current offer, or walk away from the deal, the source said.

Cribbs has been seeking $10 million guaranteed over the next three seasons, and the Browns have been offering $5 million guaranteed. The new proposal is likely somewhere in between. All of the other bonuses and escalators are set.

They're also at odds over how and when to pay out the guaranteed money. But Cribbs could exceed the maximum value of Devin Hester's recent extension if he hits all of his performance incentives and escalators. Hester, of the Bears, signed a four-year extension in 2008 worth $40 million, including $15 million guaranteed. Other top players with similar roles are making $3 million to $5.5 million a year, including Houston's Andre Davis ($4.3 million) and Buffalo's Roscoe Parris ($3 million).

Cribbs' deal would be a restructuring of his remaining three years, which are worth just over $1 million a year. The Browns have recently said they plan to expand Cribbs' role on offense.

Over the past three seasons, Cribbs he has more all-purpose yards than any other player in the NFL, with the top five stacking up this way: Cribbs -- 6,345, San Diego's Darren Sproles -- 6,052, Minnesota's Adrian Peterson -- 5,741, Jacksonville's Maurice Jones-Drew -- 5,639, and Miami's Ted Ginn Jr. -- 5,486.

10 million guaranteed over 3 years is pretty reasonable on Cribbs part.
If that's the sticking point, the team must really be trying to leverage them in to a lower deal.

If Cribbs isn't worth 10 million guaranteed for the life of his contract, then no one on this team is. Maybe we add a 4th year as others have mentioned but sheesh, the guy has earned his money. Cut the check and be done with it.

He is worth it. Smaller guarantee, more earn it, maybe 4 years. I want to see two things, this deal done and in the rearview mirror. And Cribbs destroying coverage for a score again. Get 'er done!

One side wants 10, the other wants to give 5.. and he's reporting they agreed at 7.5? That seems a bit contrived and convenient...

Ha ha ha...the NFL's first free agent after game 8 (without being released). Talk about generating a bidding war amongst contending teams.

Funny.

I hope this is resolved soon. I don't want this hanging over into free agency.

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns' Josh Cribbs will make an announcement at 5 p.m. Friday at the I-X Center before his 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. appearance at the Cleveland Auto Show. He says he will make the announcement to both the media and the fans in attendance.
Sources said today that Cribbs and the Browns were nearing an agreement on his contract.
Both the press conference and Cribbs' 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. autograph signing will take place at the Hyundai Display of the auto show.
"It's not very often that fans get to hear an announcement from a player in person and it's even more unlikely that they're given a chance to speak to that player right after that announcement has been made,"Cribbs said Wednesday.
"That's why I'm choosing to have this press conference at the auto show, so that anyone in attendance will have the opportunity to hear what I have to say and the chance to speak with me about it in person."

I guess that's possible, but I just don't think he does that in public at the IX Center.

So what's the line on when he again becomes "underpaid", and "deserves a new deal"?

I'm guessing that we'll hear something like that around the last month or so of the 2011 season. (If there is one)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns kick returner/wide receiver Josh Cribbs will hold a press conference Friday at 5 p.m, most likely to announce his new deal with the Browns.

The press conference will be held in conjunction with his previously scheduled appearance the the 2010 Cleveland Auto Show at the I-X Center.

Cribbs' representatives announced the press conference in a release, but did not disclose what the news would be. He is scheduled to sign autographs at the show from 6-8 p.m. at the Hyundai display.

“It’s not very often that fans get to hear an announcement from a player in person. And, it’s even more unlikely that they’re given a chance to speak to that player right after that announcement has been made," Cribbs said in a statement.

“That’s why I’m choosing to have this press conference at the auto show. So that anyone in attendance will have the opportunity to hear what I have to say and the chance to speak with me about it in person.”

A Browns spokesman said they were not aware of the press conference.

A league source told The Plain Dealer on Tuesday that Cribbs and the Browns were very close to completing the new deal, with only the guaranteed money still to be determined. Cribbs had been seeking $10 million over the next three seasons and the Browns have been offering $5 million guaranteed.

Cribbs' new deal would be a restructuring of his remaining three years, which are worth just over $1 million a year.

Cribbs' agent, J.R. Rickert, wouldn't say Wednesday if a deal had been completed.

Cleveland Browns' Josh Cribbs signs new three-year deal worth up to $20 million
By Mary Kay Cabot
March 05, 2010, 3:30PM

Josh CribbsGus Chan, The Plain DealerBrowns wide receiver signed his new three-year at the Browns facility on Friday.

CLEVELAND -- The Browns just Paid the Man.

Receiver/returner Josh Cribbs signed his new three-year contract today, which replaces the exisiting three years he had on his previous deal through 2012, his agents said.

It's worth up to $20 million, including about $7.5 million guaranteed -- meaning he'd be the highest-paid special-teamer in the game if he hits all of his incentives. The miminum of the value of the deal is guaranteed money.

"It's a win-win for everyone involved,'' agent Peter Schaffer told The Plain Dealer. "It's a great statement by the new regime. It shows that the Browns are committed to winning -- and that they were willing to take care of their best player.''

Cribbs' new deal, which averages about $6.3 million if he earns the maximum value, exceeds Devin Hester's $5.4 million average. Hester, the Chicago Bears specialist, signed a four-year, $40 million deal in 2008, including $15 million guaranteed.

Cribbs will hold a press conference today at 5 p.m. at the 2010 Cleveland Auto Show at the I-X Center to discuss the new deal. He said he wanted to do it there in front of the fans who have supported him for the past five years here and throughout the contract ordeal.

"You have to give the Browns a ton of credit for recognizing Josh's value to the team and making good on the promise they made him,'' said agent J.R. Rickert. "It's been a long road, but we couldn't be happier with the way it turned out.''

Rickert said the incentives and escalators in the deal are "really attainable numbers. If he performs at 2009 levels, he's likely to receive the maximum value of the contract.''

There are six levels that Cribbs can reach in the deal, and one of the escalators can be reached by making the Pro Bowl in each of the next three seasons.

Cribbs earned his second trip to the Pro Bowl in 2009 with his blockbuster season. He returned three kickoffs for touchdowns to set the NFL career record with eight, and he posted the fifth-highest all-purpose yardage total in NFL history with 2,510 yards.

He also became the first player in NFL history to amass 1,000 kickoff return yards in each of his first five seasons. Used extensively in the Wildcat, Cribbs finished third on the team with 381 rushing yards (one TD)and caught 20 passes for 135 yards and a TD.

"Josh is looking forward to doing even more great things for the Browns in the future,'' said Rickert. "He feels he has so much more to offer and he can't wait for the season to begin.''

Browns coach Eric Mangini plans to use Cribbs even more extensively on offense this season, and might even use him some as a defensive back.

"Josh will do anything they ask of him and give it his all,'' said Rickert.

Finally, Browns and Cribbs strike a new deal
Posted by Mike Florio on March 5, 2010 3:30 PM ET
After weeks and months of stress and strain and accusations and frustrations, Browns receiver, running back, quarterback, kickoff returner, punt returner, and all-around warrior Josh Cribbs is finally a man.

A man who has been paid.

A league source tells us that the three remaining years on Cribbs' contract have been replaced with a new deal that includes $7 million in guaranteed money. (Some of that money isn't guaranteed in the traditional sense, but as a practical matter it will be earned.)

The full value, we're told, of the three years exceeds $18 million, if Cribbs continues to play like he has. And that's more than Bears overrated returner/underperforming receiver Devin Hester will make over the next three seasons.

The negotiation was a challenge, we're told, because of the 30-percent rule. Still, both sides worked through the issues and worked out a new deal.

The problem arose because Cribbs signed a long-term deal too early in his career, before he became a star player. Once he did, he hired a new agent and tried in earnest to get a new contract.

So rejoice, Cleveland. The best player on your team will be present and happy for the next three years.

Yup,, same agent that went on All Bets Are Off and complained about how the Browns weren't being fair to Cribbs..

I have a feeling this would have been done by now if they'd have done it behind closed doors instead of attacking the team in the media in Holmgrens first week on the job.. talk about classless.....

This is great. Cribbs is really the face of the franchise right now, and he had a great year last year. Hopefully they can get him involved in that offense even more, and he'll have more great play for years to come.

I understand most franchises have QB's as the face of their team. I could care less, Josh represents himself with class and gives 200% every game. I also love how he always plays pissed off when we face pukesburgh

The guy deserves every single penny IMO
