Brothers get 10 years for cooking puppy in oven
Atlanta teens killed dog, then threatened children if they told about it

Updated: 8:19 p.m. ET Feb 9, 2007
ATLANTA - Two teenage brothers each were sentenced to 10 years in prison for torturing a puppy by cooking it in an oven.

Joshua Moulder, 17, and Justin, 19, pleaded guilty in January to charges including burglary, criminal damage to property, terroristic threats and cruelty to children.

The brothers brought neighborhood children to see the dead puppy, then threatened to kill them if they reported it, prosecutors said.

Police said they found the dead mixed-breed puppy inside an oven at an apartment community center Aug. 21. Scratch marks were found inside the oven, indicating the puppy had been alive when it was placed inside, prosecutors said.

A necropsy on the 3-month-old dog found its paws and snout had been duct taped and it had been doused with paint before being placed in the oven, prosecutors said.

Authorities also found damaged computers, broken glass and splattered paint on the walls of the newly refurbished community center.

The brothers’ first trial ended in a mistrial in December. Their attorney, Timothy Owens, said he had hoped his clients’ sentencing would have focused more on rehabilitation than incarceration.

Very sick they are!

I hope that they actually spend the entire ten years in prison, and do not get out early for any reason!

I get sick every time I read these. I should be numb to it by now but it still bugs the hell out of me.

It bugs me to use the choke collar on my dog, let alone do any of this horrible stuff.

What motivates someone to do something like this 10 years is not enough and I really hope they spend the entire 10 years in there. The last couple of months it's been like a contest with sick criminals to see who can one up each other.

As long as our political and justice systems allow our society to operate in the "do-whatever-you-want" mode, this is the kind of crap that willl continue to happen. Just think of all the stuff that goes on that we don't hear about because the morons don't get caught, or it's covered up. They get away with it because there is no fear of real punishment.

This is just disgusting. If I were the judge I would not have a problem sentencing them to life in prison.

How can someone be that cruel? I mean, come on! The animal can't even defend itself.

Yes you would. You would have to follow a sentencing grid, and life wouldn't be anywhere within the guidelines.

Sorry to break the news.

Ok, this is what they should do. Cram the 2 fing bastards into an oven and then bold the door shut. Increase the temp. inside 10 degrees every 10 mins. until they both burn to death. I would LOVE to see that!!!!!!!!!

These are guys who probably had more "time outs" when they were younger than getting the old razor strap like my grandpa used to use on me.Man I hated seeing that hanging in his bathroom.LOL The only good thing about that was,if it was hanging up,he wasn't busting it across my ass. LOL

Just read the link and this was on the same page http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17053439/

This sentencing grid would be abstained from this trial, seeing how it is a special case.

I have trouble believing people like this exist in our world. Certainly a disgusting and difficult to understand crime. I'm trying to figure out what motivates someone to do this to an innocent puppy. Obviously they have some mental problems to sort out. Sometimes things can get out of hand for boys at that age.

I don't usually agree with prison sentences for most crimes aside from homicide, rape, and white collar stuff. This is no exception. If you want these boys to learn something they can use in society, sticking them with a bunch of scummy criminals doesn't sound very productive to me. Maybe if all prisons were run by Joe Arpaio things would be a little more understandable. Regardless of my opinions on the justice system, it is probably a good idea to isolate these guys from society for a while. I hope they come out better than they came in.

On a side note, could someone who is up to date on current legal terminology explain the "terroristic threats" the boys are being charged with? I'm just wondering what is considered terrorism these days.

If we outlawed ovens, then maybe crimes like this wouldn't happen.

(My Drunken Rant)

But seriously, can we think of why this would happen. Who is to blame, why would these kids do this. Are these two just evil incarnate, was it there immediate environment, society as a whole.

Sure, we can destroy these two like any other living, breathing thing. But we can't destroy the act. Are these kids evil? Is "Justice" an effective way to battle evil. What is justice?

Whose animal was this? If the kids were to eat the animal would its death be justified?

I guess the prospect of torturing something by means of cooking it alive seems horrible. SAD. From the human perspective. But ripping apart an animal like vicious hyena's is natural. From a hyena's standpoint. Are these kids animals. Why was this dogs killed. Did god allow this dog to die---obviously, can we convict god.

Its ugly, no doubt--when observed through the handicap of human emotion, but really is the deal here?

We can judge these kids only through our flawed perspective.

Man, I understand your sentiments, but differ from you in what I think may be the cause of behavior like this. We've had extremely permissive social periods (the 60's, "roaring 20's) and extremely clamp-down peroids ( 80's Reagan years, and 50's-era McCarthyism)... and the social/political climate has never had an effect on individual Human Behavior.

These 2 teens operate from a total disconnect from the values that most of society holds as truths. Essentially, we are looking at two "serial killers in training"- sociopaths who either lost or never had the capacity for empathy- the ability to put oneself in someone else's situation.

There are very few rules in society that can realistically deal with individuals like this. Life in prison is what I'd like to see for them... for one simple reason- they are probably so disfunctional that no amout of therapy, rehab, re-education or punishment would have the desired effect... to make them "normal," contributing members of society. If they can't operate in the free society we have without effing their lives up (and the lives of others around them), then they simply lose that right to be in said free society.

(I'd love to know what 'Peen would personally feel was just censureship for a crime like this- sentencing grid aside...)

About the only thing that would make sense for crazyass [censored] like this would be the Old Testament- style justice... an eye for an eye/ tooth for a tooth. But that would only make US feel better. It wouldn't fix what's broken inside these two, it wouldn't teach them what they needed to learn, and it wouldn't bring back the life they destroyed.

One thing's for certain... it wouldn't stop the next sicko from doing his own Manson/Dahmer/Gacy/ [insert name here] thing. 'Cause they're gonna do it anyway, despite what laws we have on the books.

Damn. This is just plain sad. Foster kids in closets, toddlers freezing to death, and now this. Sick is one thing, but this kind of stuff is just plain evil.

Hope I can get to sleep tonight.
Or maybe not.

I know I will get blasted but oh well. People it was a dog get over it. Sure it was wrong but come on.

Now for my reasoning. I'm a prison guard and I see endless amounts of inmates who do stuff that get less than 10 years. Murder and get less than 10, rape involving minor children (boys and girls), Kidnapping (adults and minors) and get 5 years or less, it is an endless list that inmates get less than 10 years for crimes against people and people scream about animals.

Now I'm not condoning what they did but it was an animal, people should be more upset when killers are let go, rapist are let go, crimes against people are forgotten while people get upset about things like this.

As a crime against our senses, it is easy to say 25 years.

But in the end....It is about right as it stands. Both of these people should get out in 3-4 years with probation the remainder of their term.

I have read that most sociopaths share three common traits as children: 1. Enuresis (bedwetting) 2. Pyromania 3. Incidence of cruelty towards / torture of animals.

Mark these boys names down somewhere, you'll be reading about them again, probably in connection to even more horrific acts. Only next time it won't be a puppy. Part of me thinks they should be excised like a cancer right now, because they won't be rehabilitated ... they can't be, because they have no conscience.

Oh man,,,, I just hate stories like this,,, really hate it...

It's a real good thing for them that I wasn't the judge that had to sentence them..

When I was done with them,,,,, it would not have been pretty at all..... I promise

Don't restraunts have lobster tanks with LIVE lobsters that customers pick out and then have dropped in a pot of boiling water??

Does anyone out there with moral objections to this have any idea where their hamburger came from and how the animal was treated?

Why is this illegal yet veal is perfectly acceptable?

Selective morality is a slippery slope. Lobsters, burgers, & veal. Oh my

Um, maybe because they put a live puppy in the oven? Think we can be outraged about that?

Veal? Show me someone that takes a veal calf, carries it in the house/restaurant, and shoves it in the oven.

Lobster? "Supposedly" it's an instant death when they get pitched in the boiling water.

Plus, they didn't eat the dog, and further, dogs are not "food" in this country.

Industrial raised veal is locked in a wooden cage so small that it can't lay down or even turn around. Some veal producers strap boards accross the leg joints so that they can't even bend their legs.

Veal stock is fed a salty liquid diet and denied water (this all keeps the muscles weak and tender and the anemia ensures a bright pink color in the meat).

Yeah, I'm sure being boiled alive is a really painless way to go...

The end result is that you either need to decide that living creatures should be treated as more than property or accept that this "torture" isn't all that different than what company farms are doing every single day.

Golly, I don't know about "industrial" raised veal, but I know of 2 veal farms near me.....The calves are chained up, yes, but they have shelter, they can walk, they have food and water.

Let's face it, there are extremes in everything.

And further more, please don't try to equate veal calves with tossing a puppy into an oven and baking it to death. Sorry to rain on you peta parade, but it is different. (oh, by the way, I've never had veal, if that makes a difference)

Your right, it's not the same. I don't agree with the way veal is raised but I can't equate the way people raise meat for food with the way you treat a pet.

Actually I feel PETA is a bunch of loons that do more harm than good. They're wackos.

Not that that makes either the puppy or the veal thing right.

It's easy to say "it's food so it's OK" but what does that mean then if the boys ate the puppy when they were done?

Or does it make you a criminal when you buy some chicken and forget it in the back of the fridge and end up throwing it out instead of eating it?

Not trying to preach to you; but the more you learn about how "meat" is raised today the more you have to consider the morality of it and whether or not consuming it makes you involved...
