http://www.cantonrep.com/stark/canton/x5...e-neighborhoodsA recent decision to install cameras in high crime areas in my town has me wondering if it is really a good idea for the long term . On one hand the residents of these areas may feel some small measure of added security but they give up the expectation of privacy . I think it's o.k. for that 'hood but to be honest I wouldn't want it in mine.

It's an interesting question..
Pros:
They are photographing the public spaces, so you already don't have any privacy to expect in those spaces. You potentially gain notification of a crime at the same moment you gain evidence against the perps
Cons: It makes visions of 1984 & Big Brother run through my head. Those cameras aren't likely to last even a week before they're shot, beaten and generally broken with wires cut, etc... making them a colossal waste of money.

not necassarily. they have had them here for years (if you go around the united center, you'll see them)
i just don't really see the point of putting them in high crime areas. the crime just moves elsewhere. you just don't miss these cameras, they stick out like a sore thumb.
i do like that around here, the police have immediate access to those cameras from their vehicles. i think it helps.
what i do like, and from what i hear, these red light enforcement cameras are going bye bye. thank God. what a joke.

Its a waste of money. Its another way for our government to stick its nose where it doesn't belong.
IMO, its up to the individual to keep themselves safe. its not the governments job to police every street corner 24/7.
I find it absurd that anyone would want this type of thing in their neighborhood----most people wouldn't. But they would certainly be fine with it in "the hood." Which is pretty ridiculous. Just shows how out of touch most folks are when it comes to the inner city. Its a community too----and they don't want cameras up--just like you don't want cameras up.
Mainly I see it as a waste of money---but I also think its unnecessary surveillance.
I think this country will eventually have cameras up everywhere though. They will sell the idea to the public under the disguise of public safety---thats what they've been doing for years as it is.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

Well, from one stand point, they will help deter crime and at the very least, if crime is committed, there would be video evidence and perhaps a quicker ID and apprehension of the bad guys...
On the other hand, big brother is watching.. But again, if you aren't doing anything wrong.. what's the big deal.
Ok, so they catch you picking your nose or scratching you butt.. big deal.. LOL
I guess I'm not as worried about cameras as some folks are. Mostly because it's not my intent to do anything wrong or illegal. and if I do, then I guess I deserve what I get...

Man just seeing you type that scares me . It scares me because if enough people feel that way it becomes easy to go down other darker roads ...all for our own good . Maybe I,m too alligned with the tin foil hat club but it still concerns me.

As long as they are in public/common areas I have zero problem with it,now if they start pointing them in ways to spy on people then we have a problem. They have been using camera over in Europe for years and they have been highly sucessful... and they make for cool criminals caught on tape shows KING

You said it,, I didn't
Seriously, I really don't have anything to hide as it were.. So if it stops crime or gets the crooks caught,, then I got no problem with it.
I think your fear is that if the cameras are there, someone will find a way to use them that maybe you don't like..
I can't think of any, but perhaps you can enlighten me what scares you about them?

One situation where I think they could be of use would be at a public playground where vandalism has repeatedly occurred. I'd give it a chance to work before giving up and allowing a few idiots to spoil it for the majority.

Newton Falls already has them. They have 4 of them around town. They have a cop sitting there watching them all day. They even have one thats supposed to watch their historic covered bridge for vandals but the bridge is always shut down

I would not mind it if they used the cameras to cover playgrounds, parks and school zones.
Kids get abducted in school zones and playgrounds and parks should be safe for everyone and vandal/drug free as possible.
I would not want it pointing at my house. Especially when I'm shoveling snow. And falling down. And getting up and falling down again.

My first reaction is yes. Then again crime is not really a problem where I live. Neighbors have told me that there were some garage break ins before I moved in, but that was over 15 years ago. The reason I say yes is because I don't see it as an invasion, at least not at this point and not with the stated intention. There is always a trade off with privacy. In this case it's in the name of security (maybe akin to arguments of liberty vs. chaos?) . Privacy.... from Kroger cards to ATM machines, cell phones to the internet. KOB has a thread concerning Facebook privacy and when reading it I couldn't help but think about what internet providers have on their logs. Google is a similar consideration...heck, the street level view of my house takes you to the front door (and I really need to get my driveway paved ).

Playgrounds, school yards.. any place kids gather. Could be a great tool tracking kidnappers...

Yes, public gathering places would be fine, and maybe some downtown areas. Typical neighborhood streets probably not needed as much. If you have the cameras at major intersections and public areas, then there should be enough coverage to identify a vehicle or person suspected of doing something in a neighborhood nearby. My issue is, with the cost of quality cameras coming down so much, why are all those "Caught on tape" videos so crappy. Like the news showing the face of a bank robber, and I look at it and say "the camera took that shot from 10' away and I can't even tell if the suspect is a humanoid." If cameras are protecting millions, I'm not buying the Fisher Price brand.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Great point. Public gathering places should be subject to surveillance because it can help a lot when the police are not there.
I'm not in favor of cameras in general residential neighborhoods. However, if there is an area where shootings and murders happen on a daily basis, I don't think camera would be a horrible thing but I'm still weary of that because it is very Orwellian even if the intentions are good.

unfortunately this is something that sick people like pedophilers(sp) would be interested in hacking into... i know that if they would happen to be placed in playgrounds etc they better make damn sure they are secure
