when the cavs season ends i'll be gearing up towards browns football.
Hopefully they keep us entertained through June.
I still enjoy kicking back with a beer after work and watching a game, but I normally start to lose interest in the middle of summer. Especially after the Reds go through what has become somewhat of a recent tradition - the June swoon.

MLB has big problems with only 3 teams Boston, Yankees and Mets. Mets spend tons of money but need to groom some of their own to blend in with the bought players.
Minnesota in a new ballpark will be able to be like the Tribe of the mid & late 90's. In the sold out park they'll have the money to buy the players they need and trade for around trade deadline.
Twinkies run away with it in the central. Me? I'm just going to kick around the minors in the Midwest League, NYPenn League, Eastern League and South Atlantic League game

dan gilbert does care about winning though. his bottom line is winning. the dolans' bottom line is the bottom line.
he didn't have to take antawn jamison's contract on this season. didn't have to do it, but he has given danny ferry carte blanche to do whatever is needed to make the team better.
Gilbert's bottom line is keeping LeBron. Period. End of Story.
Any $$$ he forks over now, if it keeps LeBron, it gets paid back 100x. And he knows that.
With LeBron, the Cavs are a top5 revenue generating NBA team. W/O LeBron, we would be lucky to be top 50%.
I love that Gilbert understands this and puts the $$$ forward as a result, but let us not pretend he is some sort of altruistic savior to Cleveland sports who puts the $$$ forward only for the sake of winning(though I am sure he enjoys the winning aspect as well).

Instead of wishing that Dan Gilbert takes over ownership of the Indians ... people should be wishing for David Stern to take over commisionership of the MLB.
I don't want $tern anywhere near MLB.
What MLB really needs is a Roger Goodell clone.

Goodell never has completely changed the financial infrastructure of a professional sports league. He was handed a great financial structure and he has made sound decisions, but he has been more caretaker than visionary.
A visionary would be needed for MLB.

it is still more money that he is taking on that he could have legitimately not had to take and still made a great case to keep lbj.
and while most of us think he stays, it is still a risk that he is taking.
i do see what those of you are saying though. the nba is set up for smaller markets to compete. they can pay their own players more when said players are up for free agency.
although i still think he'd be running the tribe a hell of a lot better than the dolans. i just don't think they are fit to run a major league baseball team.
if dan gilbert owned the indians, cc sabathia would still probably not be in cleveland, and i think it is arguable whether or not cliff lee would be around, i lean towards him still being on the team.
i'd love to see a structure like the nba has with teams allowed to pay their own players more so that they don't get bullied with bloated contracts from new york and boston. then we'd see what owners are truly dedicated to winning and which just care about making money.

Exactly ... the reason the Cavs succeed in the NBA is because of the salary structure and free agent rules that Stern has set up there. Goodell has really done nothing other than inherit the best run league on the planet and slap players on the wrist for breaking laws.

the only way i ever see things getting fixed is if the sport starts to dwindle, season tickets and walk up decrease. and companies start pulling ad money out of these tv deals.
you can't just say you're going to restructure the system, they'll strike like they did in '94. (by the way funny story, all the guys in my extended family, grandpa, uncles, cousins, all planned a trip to cooperstown back in '94, planned it at least a year in advance. the day we walked into the hall was the day they went on strike. true story)
then maybe the players would give in. until then, why should they? what do they care that fans in kansas city and oakland don't get to enjoy the same product as those in new york and boston.

What Gilbert has done is promote hockey the right way in this town! Don't forget Gilbert is a HUGE hockey fan. On the weekends the Monsters are getting more then the Cavs did before Lebron. The lower bowl is packed. The Monsters are 7th in attendance in the AHL.
I wonder how Denver does it with 4 pro teams?

spoken without taking the time to look up your history. the Lumberjacks did extremely well in the 90's and through poor management eventually fell apart this decade.
they did MUCH better than the Monsters are doing right now, in fact. I spent a good portion of my HS nights going out to see the 'Jacks play.

Quote:
At the end of the 1994-95 season, the Lumberjacks were last in the Northern Division of the IHL with a 34-37-10 record, although they once again made the IHL playoffs. In 41 home dates at the Gund arena, the Lumberjacks drew about 8,500 fans per game, for a season attendance total of 351,223. The team was contracted with the Penguins through the 1998 season.
and the Monsters (from april 9th, but I didn't find the current stats. if it somehow breaks the 8K barrier now, then I'll apologize for my mistake).
also, realize that they had to give away 100K in prizes to get that 15K figure in attendance (wasn't the 19K they mention in this article).

Quote:
Entering Thursday night, Lake Erie ranked 11th among the AHL's 29 teams with an average attendance of 5,634. A crowd of 19,000 would kick the number to 5,969, which might be good enough for the top 10.
Last season, the Monsters ranked 11th in the league at 5,974.

all 4 of their teams are pretty good. the rockies have been on a run lately (we'll see if they can keep that team together)
the nuggets are a top 5 nba team with an upper echelon player and a great supporting cast
the broncos had a solid year, they fell apart, but they have been a pretty good team for quite some time.
and the avs are back on the rise, they did have a great thing going up until patty roy retired.
they have no true "bad" team in town.

It is not the Dolans...If you look at the percentages they spend in correlation to the money that comes in...they spend more than the Yankees.
Not sure about this dude. - From what I've heard, the Indians 2010 payroll is the lowest in the Central division, and is 2nd to last in the entire American League.

But going into last year it wasn't. Then they traded away a few guys to cut payroll down. They didn't add really anything so it's still low going into this year. We are in full rebuild mode, don't expect anything for a few years IMO.

Why do you care how much money the Indians are spending? Why does that matter so much?
The Indians could not outbid the Yankees for CC or for Lee. You can, of course, bitch and complain about not resigning them, but until you understand the fact that CC and Lee were/are determined to test the FA market, you cannot make an informed decision.
Then again, I don't expect Cleveland fans to understand baseball. 75% of the people in this town don't care about baseball unless the Indians are good.

The AHL.com has Monsters at 7 http://theahl.com/stats/schedule.php?view=attendance I'm at all the Monsters weekend games and its packed. Like MLB, minor league hockey has trouble selling tix on weeknights. Its really just a weekend sport. MLB teams hate being home in April, May September. How does Denver afford suites for four pro teams? Pro-sports is all about suite sales.

i think people understand the way the tribe is working, i think they are tired of it. i think they are tired of the promises.
the tribe had a nice little thing going, and instead of building upon it, they decided they'll just go as is, and when that didn't work, they said, well let's do it all over again.
this just in, people are not fans of rebuilding.
nobody wants to dedicate time and money for something that might be good in 3 years. it's not fun, it's frustrating. and what do they have to look forward to once they are good? one crack at it and then back to square one.
while watching all these other teams go out and get the best possible talent. baseball is becoming an unwatchable product if you aren't a fan of a major market team.
i really wonder if maybe some eyes will open when pujols leaves st louis. because you know there will be a gigantic bidding war between the sox and yankees for big al.
i honestly hope that the sport dwindles down to the point where the restructuring of a true salary cap is put into play.
like i said, it is frustrating, there are more teams knowing right now, that they have ZERO chance of doing anything than there are of teams that do. it's a joke.

By the way, last year we had the #14th highest payroll ... http://baseball.about.com/od/newsrumors/a/09teamsalaries.htmyet ranked #25th in attendance ... http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance/_/year/2009
Hmmmmm..... I believe what you mean to write was that we had the 14th highest payroll AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, and ranked 25th in attendance at the END OF THE YEAR.
- Which means that attendance dipped after ownership dropped our best players.
Just so I can understand this better, back when the Dick Jacobs owned the team, how did the people of Cleveland respond with attendance?
I ask because Dick Jacobs put a good product on the field. - How did the people of Cleveland respond when their ownership actually cared?
Did the people of Cleveland come to Tribe games back when Jacobs was owner? Did we have, oh, say, over 400 straight sellouts back then?
After all, it's not like we support a winner here. I mean, teams sell out over 400 straight games all the time.

Look, in 2007, when we ended up one game from the World Series, we ranked 21st in attendance. Dick Jacobs was a good owner, but those sellouts of the 1990s were a result of several advantages. The Browns weren't in town and the Cavs were irrelevant, so the Indians weren't competing with anyone for entertainment dollars. The local economy was stronger back then, so more people were able to go to the ballgame.
2007 proves that this isn't all on the Dolans; there was a very good product on the field that year.

To be honest with you I could care less about baseball. I hardly watched even when the Indians were good. So if that makes me a bandwagoner sue me
