Didn't see a thread on this; Lakewood St. Ed's long run finally comes to a halt. Edited here: In case anyone is wondering, the last time they didn't win it was 1996,...Walsh Jesuit.

St Paris-Graham back again though, in D-II.

congrats to Wadsworth.

that is a remarkable achievement both by St. Ed's (the run of championships) and Wadsworth (being the team that finally knocked them off that perch).

They had been lurking around 4-7 the past few years. But, I figured Massillon Perry would be The Man (men) someday,....didn't get to go; musta ' been a helluva tournament -- appeared to have been within a one match score. Gotta back and lookie-see, did they have any bouts head-to-head.

Congrats to them, but they need to recognize that it is temporary.... the majority of St. Ed's team is freshmen & sophomores.

pin on the 135lb final:
135: Louden Gordon, Wadsworth pin Mark Martin, Lakewood St. Edward 5:59

6 point swing on the 145lb final (3 points for win)
145: Brad Squire, Wadsworth dec. Anthony Salupo, Lakewood St. Edward 3-2

Can't blame one wrestler who made it to the Finals on the loss, but that is the highest profile matchup.

4 St. Ed Champions
4 Wadsworth Champions

6 "other" school Champions

Not to juke, but as it always is there,... It's as much a wrestling school "factory" as Massillon ( or Iggy) is a football one.

And the kids that don't find a way there end up at Paris-Graham.

(I would pay good money to see a dual between those two schools.)

What is Dominance?

There are 170 Division II schools in Ohio with wrestling

There are 14 weight classes in high school with 16 participants in each weight class going to state

One of those 170 schools managed to get 11 kids to state out of the 14 weight classes ... See More

Of those 11 kids 8 will be wrestling for 1st place tomorrow, with two others in the placement rounds

St. Paris Graham is the name of that school. To equate it to basketball...basically it would take an all star team comprised of the best kids from all 169 other schools to beat them.

That is dominance.

I wrote this as my facebook status update. They ended up with 6 champions, 2 2nds, 1 3rd and a 7th.

There some pretty great matches on here.

Btw, congrats to Paige Nemec on being the 1st girl to make it to state and win a match.

wow I never though I would see the day Ed's didn't win. It's been a staple at my alma mater. This run started my freshman year there. Coach Urbas is an amazing coach and a great person! Sad we lost but i'm sure we will be hungry to make another run!

Woodridge continues the tradition of sending at least one wrestler to states for the last 15 years or so. Good job Bulldogs!

As for the rest of the tournament, heavy on St. Ed's and Paris like usual. The 160 from Ed's pinned the guy in the finals. Pretty impressive.

what was the score before the last second pin? basically, would St. Ed's have won overall if that guy could have held out a tiny fraction longer?

Maybe 7-4, so they got 6 instead of three ? Don't remember for sure, but I don't think it would have made a difference the way the rest of the Wadsworth wrestlers put it up.

ok, and that score probably doesn't reflect the 3 back-points as the ref usually doesn't show those until the sequence has been completed. thanks for completing the story there though. always good to see and who knows, maybe they'll make it into a TV movie someday

If you add in the three back points it is still only a 6 point win. That is still not a major victory so no bonus points would have been awarded. The pin gave them 2 bonus points.

Without the pin Wadsworth would have won 170 to 167.5 instead of 172-167.5

That's what I was thinking, but was not too sure on how the scoring went,...there were also a lot of Ed "points lost" during wrestlebacks too,....still, a helluva tournament. Wadsworth seemed to have come out of nowhere, so to speak.

Actually last year the were thinking Wadsworth might be able to overtake Ed's. They have built themselves a top program from the wee ones on up. I don't believe they have open enrollment so what they have been able to accomplish is truly an amazing feat.

P~I'm almost POSITIVE that you're right about Wadsworth not having open enrollment. My aunt, uncle and their 3 girls live there. Wish I could afford to live there. NICE area, great schools.

They finished fifth,...and that was the first time I'd ever seen them on the horizon (not that I watch that closely,...). The team that had always been "sneaking around" was Perry.

He is in 8th grade. Ended up the season winning the EOWL Tournament and had a recorded of 19-2. He ended up going to state and went 2-2. I was somewhat happy because he hadn't done anything in 6 weeks due to a rash of injuries, including a concussion at districts. He did roll over like a fish in his last match at state. I know he didn't want to comeback and wrestle on the 2nd day but is there ever a reason to pin yourself?

As a team my middle school had only one loss in dual matches. We won the Waterloo Pool Tournament, South Range Holiday Invitational and 2nd in the Boardman Super Duals. In Boardman I had to forfeit 104, 142, 160, 172, 205 and 245. Five because the kids were at ski club (my fault for allowing it) and one was my son who had a ankle sprain.

It was most likely my last year as a coach. They are going to be hiring a head coach and let the whole staff go to allow whoever they hire to pick all of his own coaches.

I'm not looking to coach again. I started this program and accomplished my goal of making it a varsity sport. I chose to stay at the middle school because I am not a varsity coach. Where I excel is I have the ability to get kids out for the sport even if they doubts. I always have someone who is a much better technical coach teach moves and I concentrate on what I want taught and how I want the practices to be ran.

I have been very fortunate with the quality kids I have had and their parents who have had a great desire to see the program succeed.

Congratulations on your career then. I have huge respect to anyone who has spent time coaching kids. And it sure sounds like you did it the right way.
