Seneca is a solid move if we didn't give up much (3rd round or later in next years draft)

though Holmgren said no QB-competition. right now it seems we have 3 QBs with similar stature in the league and 3 GMs might give you a different opinion of who to start.

the most likely situation has already been stated: that DA is traded/released. Quinn is heralded as starter with Seneca as his tutor and backup (in case he falls on his face). if that happens, it will be interesting how much rope Quinn is given if he starts out slowly again.

I'll add in that we likely take a mid-round QB in the draft to fill out the 3rd spot.

it's not the most appealing of situations, but it's not the worst either.

Its not flashy but having spent those years with Holmgren has turned him into a serviceable QB when coming out of college nobody really thought the guy could play QB. He was always being talked about as a convert to WR to have a career type of college QB.

I will only be upset with this move if it comes out that we gave up a high pick for him, but it doesn't appear to be the case right now. Or if it ends up being a high pick because he came in and set the world on fire, well I could live with that

Hopefully Holmgren takes an interest in whoever we have (or get) as our QB of the future and works with him like he has worked with guys in the past. Not everyone he has worked with has become a superstar, but they've all become better than they could have been without him and a few HAVE become superstars. Up to this point Holmgren has done nothing to deserve not getting the benefit of the doubt when it comes to QB's so I'm gonna give that to him and cross my fingers.

I think this move may just be something to help out the guy Holmgren deems as the guy by giving them someone to work with every day who has been through Holmgren's program, knows his methods and his system. Wallace may be given a chance to play for a year until we get that guy or he may not, but either way its not a big move but it seems to be a good one.

Seneca Wallace has the tools and the knowledge to be Browns' starting QB this fall: Grossi analysis
By Tony Grossi
March 08, 2010, 10:30PM

senecadr.jpgDean Rutz / The Seattle TimesWell-grounded in the West Coast offense which Mike Holmgren wants to install with the Browns, Seneca Wallace would appear to have a headstart on the starting QB job this fall.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Introducing your starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns ... Seneca Wallace?

Don't count it out.

"He's accurate, he's decisive, he's got a strong arm and drives defenses crazy because he's very mobile," a league source said of Wallace.

The perennial Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback came to the Browns in a trade Monday night for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick believed to be in the middle rounds. But nobody in the NFL probably values Wallace more than Browns President Mike Holmgren.

Most Browns fans have never seen Wallace play because he has sat behind Matt Hasselbeck in far-flung Seattle for seven years. Hasselbeck's frequent injuries put Wallace on the field for spot duty. Holmgren would take advantage of Wallace's athletic ability and play him at receiver at times.

This move tells you that the Browns will run Holmgren's offense immediately. Holmgren's top aide, Gil Haskell, has been meeting regularly with offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to teach him the basics.

Holmgren had to acquire a quarterback with intimate knowledge of the system. A trade for Philadelphia's Donovan McNabb is highly improbable because the Eagles would want the Browns' No. 1 pick. Wallace, 29, will serve as a transition quarterback until Holmgren acquires a young quarterback of the future.

With Seattle, Holmgren drafted a quarterback five times in 10 years -- but none higher than the third round.

"I think Mike's still thinking about other moves," the source said. "Whether it happens or not, I don't know. He could draft a young guy in the second or third round.

"Seneca at least gives him some flexibility with someone who knows the system. He's got someone who can help the other skill guys with the system. There's nobody on the staff who knows that system. So when guys get together on their own, he can work with them.

"Seneca is one of the best locker room guys in the league, an unbelievable leader. Very athletic and has a much stronger arm and is more accurate than people think."

The move greases the departure of Derek Anderson. He probably will be released in the next week or two, if not traded. Brady Quinn could be shipped out, too. If he stays, it's doubtful he will be able to learn Holmgren's system in one off-season and beat out Wallace for the starting job. Same thing if a quarterback is drafted.

No, that title belongs to Diam.

And what made me jump off the Quinn train?

I saw him play in the NFL.

Unlike most of the Brats, I punched my ticket off that sinking ship before they ran out of lifeboats.

Great..we now lead the league in mediocre QB's...Seneca has no height, but some tools, Quinn has no tools, no accuracy, no Pocket awareness and no brain and no arm but decent size, DA has no Brain but his feet are to big but a great arm..Maybe Holmgren is going to send them to the Clinic to make his own QB..We better hope Quinn doesn't start next year or we will be picking first and paying him huge money for hitting escalators. He is not smart enough to learn this system anyway. He never learned the one we were in or any for that matter since he has been a pro.

At this point I would say Wallace is starting, but hopefully more moves are made. Either they can Rework Andersons Deal and ship Quinn off, Trade Anderson and Keep Quinn as a backup or hopefully get rid of them both and Trade for a legit starter. How Anyone who has watched Quinn and still thinks he can start or even make it in this league period amazes me. Have you ever seen a weaker, more telegraphed, nervous wreck at QB in your life? He is inept and that has been consistent more than 90% of his starts. I highly doubt we go into the year with a Wallace/Quinn or Wallace Anderson Combo...it's certain death. There has to be more.

My guess is since we have a buttload of picks this year and we traded a 2011 pick is that they will get a pick for DA and continue to stockpile picks and on draft day we will see a package of picks and Quinn to Philly or multiple team trade. Why else not give up a pick from this year?

I'm not happy with Quinn either but please... be fair.

Who do you think would trade us a pick for DA when they know we ain't keeping him and his 7 million dollar price tag. They can get him on the cheap in a couple weeks.

i don't think we're done either but i do think wallace will be our starter out of this group. and you know what? i'm good with that. wallace may not have ideal height but i've seen him make nfl throws, which is more than i can say about quinn. further, wallace has great athleticism. he even has that jump pass, that eo had be raving about with quinn, in his repetoire so there is a little something for all involved. most importantly, if the article is correct, wallace is accurate and a leader. if nothing else was clearer last season, no one respected quinn as a leader.

Because Wallace has been just awful when he has started.

Sometimes I wonder if you and I watch the same NFL. Clamoring for Troy Smith then being pissed when we bring in a much more polished Troy Smith-like QB.

Seattle fan perspective:

Quote:

Agreed. Solid backup, transitional starter type of QB. He's developed into a pocket QB in that he uses his feet to buy time in the pocket more than using them to scramble for yardage. He's big on ball control and doesn't turn the ball over much. His lack of height gives him a hard time throwing over the middle. And he seemed to do much better when given repetition...he really struggled when he was the backup and forced into games due to injury of the starter.

I think its a fine trade for both teams. Seneca should do a fine job keeping the seat warm for the future QB and he's better than the Quinn/Anderception platoon.

Why wouldn't he be able to learn a system in one off-season? Don't players learn new systems every year when they change teams or a coach gets hired/fired? Quinn may not have all the physical tools but he seems to be a pretty sharp, hard-working guy. If there is one thing he can do it's learn a system in one off-season.

Also, hasn't Grossi listened at any of Holmgren's press conferences? No one is beating out anyone for the QB spot. That position will be decided before mini-camp.

It seems like this article was just pumped out because the website needed a story about Wallace...quick.

I don't think anyone said he was going to lead us to the promised land.

More than likely, he is the starter the next few years and the Browns draft a developmental QB.

Actually, more than likely he's our backup and Derek hits the waiver-wire.

Considering Anderson has a zero percent chance of staying, getting a guy like wallace was a given.

A starter? Highly, HIGHLY unlikely.

I don't think it changes anything with respect to Seattle.

a) If they sign Marshall and Denver doesn't match it, Seattle doesn't own the #6 pick any longer.
b) Seattle's needs are LT, QB, RB, DE, and DT (and could use WR, and DBs), so QB is and was a distinct possiblity
c) The unknown is what Carrol and Schneider are thinking - its their first season and we don't have much of a track record to go on

What we do know, is that Seattle definitely needs to either sign a FA or draft a QB this year for sure. Mike Teel is someone the last regime was intrigued enough to draft, but isn't ready in case Hasselbeck goes down.

I wouldn't be surprised if Seattle and Denver work out a trade so Seattle can hold onto the #6 pick and trade the #14 pick to the Broncos.

He hasn't learned or been comfortable in any offense in the pros. Like you said most QB's should be able to learn in one offseason yet he struggles with the basic fundamentals and concepts. Either that or he can't read a defense. The offensive gameplan is severely limited with him at QB and has been and he can't run a simplified offense efficiently. Either he is scared to make any throws over five yards, has no confidence in his arm strength or himself, or the coaches know he is limited in his abilities, his accuracy, or his lack of grasping the offense..or a combination of everything. He holds the ball waaaay too long, because he has mental blockage on what to do with it. Thus the Flare or dump off. I either see a trade for a vet starter or they have their eyes set on someone in the second or third to groom behind Seneca for a year or even potentially start, given we have a good line and should have a decent running game and let them learn on the fly under the tutelage of Haskell and Wallace.

I am sorry, but the ineptness Quinn displayed at QB this year went beyond what any QB in this league should ever display and this team was behind him or had as much faith in him as an aetheist does for God. I would have to believe Holmgren seen what Mangini and Crennel and most people do when watching him or evaluating him and he will be gone and this is just the wheels in motion for a whole new group at the QB position. There is not much substance with Quinn. Even Anderson you can say he has arm strength at least, give me one thing Quinn possesses or has shown to make you believe he could be a QB in this league.

Acutally, Tim Ruskell did - but I'm sure Holmgren said ok as coach.

And as a 3rd QB he is infintely better than David Greene, who was the guy that was there. Getting rid of Greene and picking up a guy with starting experience would be well worth the 6th rounder for any team in the league.

Hey hey hey.. David Greene is good. Maybe not a better thrower than Frye, but definitely more smarts.

Who does David Greene play for nowadays? I can't recall ......

How many regular season snaps did he take in his career?

Smarts? lol I love it when people state things with such certainty ...... despite the fact that the guy couldn;t sniff the field in 4 years in the league ..... and was reported to have had problems picking up the WCO in Seattle .... leading to his departure.

The only way I see us getting picks for DA is if a couple teams show interest in him which Arizona already has. Anderson will rework his contract, wherever he goes.

As of today, Walllace is the best QB on the roster. If Quinn can beat him out, super! I don't think that will happen. Maybe another QB gets signed, but until then, Wallace is the QB.

I like the move. The kid has progressed every year and is now in my opinion ready to blossom in to a pretty darn good qb.

Reminds me a bit of Gerrard in Jville.

We'll find out once the season starts.

Also, this may not be the end of the QBs we bring in, but I have the feeling Wallace is ready to make a step up in his career.

I don't see why the guy can't deliver solid qb ratings every week....say mid 80's to low 90's..

People around here for a year or more have been talking about having a player to manage the game...now we might have one of those and now all of a sudden peoples opinions have flopped and they are wanting a qb to take over the game.

I don't see why wallance can't deliver 250 yards in the air and keep several drives alive with his feet on a regular basis while maintaining a good completion percentage and manageable turn over rate.

Add in what at least at the end of the season looked like a ground game that can move the ball and that spells "Move the Chains"

Are people really going to complain about that??

Three or four consecutive first downs generally turns in to points.

Move the chains, the points will come.

I actually thought since CF is a FA the Browns might make a move to sign him, since he has ties to MH as well.

That said i think wallace will start this season and will draft someone to take over in a year or 2...

The focus this season will be on the running game though so look for us to take a QB and a RB.

well, let me say this, if this is Fun,,then can we just skip it...LOL

Some of you have said that there is more in store,, I hope so. I'm hoping that the brain trust isn't thinking he's the answer..

A stopgap,, sure, I can see that. He comes to town with the knowledge of a system we seem to be heading for (yeah toad, if it wasn't clear before, it is now).. So from that stand point, it makes sense.

I remember watching Wallace's first starts for an injured Hasselbeck and I was intrigued. Of course, I was watching the partial birth abortion known as Charlie Frye playing QB at the time.

Not sure what Grossi means by "stronger arm than people think." Seems right there with Frye's arm.

I think one thing was clear, that we had to drop either DA or Quinn, this team can not move forward with both on the roster. Wallace is a great choice IF Holmgren plans to see if Quinn can do it next year, as Wallace knows Holmgren's system that he seems to want installed with Daboll, so he would be a great teacher to Quinn to move things along, and perfect backup if BQ goes down.

if the plan is to keep DA, then I'm not sure what the thinking is, unless they think they can tame DA's arm, and improve his short game.

If DA is our starter.. then we must draft a tackle in the first.. and a guard in the 2nd...
