I can't wait for the Ben Watson visit, I'm hoping he doesn't leave Cleveland without a contract.
Having a tight end that can stretch the field would be a HUGE plus for the offense.

I agree with you, I hope Watson goes to Cleveland. And stays in Cleveland.

Backed up by Evan Moore, I'm all for it. Is Watson a good blocker ?

From what I remember, Watson is an above average blocker.

at this moment the TEs on the team are:
Heiden Royal Moore
Heiden will be 34 in September and Royal couldn't catch a cold this past season.
Is Watson any good?

From the limited time I have seen Watson he appears to be a pretty descent TE just under- utilized.

Watson was extremely highly touted coming out of college, and is a very good blocker.... but I think he just gets lost in that offense with the likes of Randy Moss & Wes Welker catching balls.
He was their #3 receiver last year, but they only threw to him enough to catch 29 balls. Conversely, Moss had 83 and Welker had 123 receptions. That is a HUGE discrepancy as to where things are getting thrown. Heck, they threw to their RB's more than they did Watson (but Watson has more YPC than any of them).
Under utilized would definitely seem to be the key descriptor for him.

You are right. Estandia would have been a restricted free agent if we tendered him. We didn't tender him.

ESPN keeps bringing up Thomas Jones for us. While I would love to see Jones and Harrison combo we haven't even scheduled a visit with him have we?
Ben Watson is a nice pickup for us. Royal, flush that down the drain please.

I think that ESPN keeps looking at our RB's and they see no heir to Jamal's big bodied role. We have a bunch of smaller backs. I think that they may also be biting a little hard on the "He's a former JET, so of course the Browns will want him" angle

I don't want Jones.......I don't want Bell......I don't want another runningback on this roster this year. For the first time in a long time i'm comfortable with the runningback we have on the roster and would like to see them play a full season to see what they are able to do.

I'd much rather have Mike Bell than Thomas Jones.
Jones is in that age where RB's start to go from very productive to retirement.
you had a good run Hank.

Jones isn't even that big though.
James Davis 218lbs Chris Jennings 219lbs Thomas Jones 215lbs
I don't see why we need a big back, why can't we use Vickers more in certain situations? He's not a bad receiver and he's a big guy for short yardage. I see no reason why we can't Mike Alstott him out.

And he is 31 years old.
It's the danger area. Jamal Lewis went from very productive to basically retirement over one offseason.
Jones is following the same path as 90% of the running backs with his running style.

I don't see why he couldn't be productive for a few more years (Jones). Curtis Martin ran for 1,600 yards at the age of 31. If we could squeeze 1,600 yards from Thomas Jones' legs over the next two or three seasons as a backup to Harrison I'd be happy.

That's a risky business to pray that Jones can squeeze yardage from his legs.
Mike Bell is a safer pickup and will provide exactly what we need.

the difference is that he and chester taylor are relatively "young" 30 year old rbs. jones didn't really start taking a large workload until 4-5 years into the league whereas jamal took a heavy workload once he enterred the league. jones could have another 2 years of solid production in this league and can easily serve as a stop gap member of a rb rotation.
realistically, if we signed him, we'd only want to get 800 solid yards from him and hope to get 800 from harrison.

Ugh
I'm sick of getting retreads tho. Just like everyone else has said, lets not have 30 yr old RBs on our rosters until Davis/Harrison/Jennings run for us until they're 30 and then we can give them to some poor team who needs 30 yr old rbs.

That is what i'm thinking. True he isn't 240 lbs and that scares some people, but as some pointed out Vickers could and should get more short yardage touches (just please no sweeps ). Jones is faster and runs harder than Mike Bell. Jemal was SLLLOOOOWW, Jones is not.
We can't keep going into a football season short handed at running back. Picking up a guy like Jones would really help the offense and the rate Mangini had to run because of our QB situation you need guys you know can carry the load for a whole season.

not to be a jerk but frankly, no one cares that you don't want a retread. for the record, i don't want one either but i recognize we can't address everything in one offseason. if you can get a guy who is familiar with our staff who has shown to be productive and can do it for another year or two, if his price is manageable, you do it and focus on other weaknesses.

Ben Watson is very explosive on film. More explosive than his stats say.
That tells me he's very underutilized.

Yeah but if we get a retread now that means that Harrison will be a bunchload fresher later on when we need him more. And Jones is by and far more proven than Jennings is. So we know we'll get solid production out of him.

Watson would be a nice, "Solid" pickup.
His hands are a little iffy at times, and sometimes he is a little injury prone, but other than that.. He's one of those guys I think that can contribute.
He and moore would be perfect together. I'd also like to draft Tony Moeaki of Iowa.. Very talented TE.

I agree.
Watson and Moore would make a "very solid" TE combo IMO.

Kevin Jones was cut from the Bears today (no surprise considering they have Forte, Wolfe, and now Taylor). He's battled through some injuries the past 2 years, but he'll only be 28 and has plenty of tread on the tires. From what I recall, he's got good size, runs well and chatches well (not sure about blocking). No harm in signing him to a 1 or 2 year deal and seeing what he has in training camp - salaries aren't guaranteed until game 1 if I remember correctly.

I am pretty sure Royal had a broken finger which inhibited his ability to bend the finger and therefore, led to problems catching the ball. I think this may have affected his performance on the field.
I am not a huge RR fan....but I can certainly see the potential for problems to arise if you have to catch the ball with a finger that is in a splint.

I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

Seeing that we let Estandia go(probably because he wasn't the blocker Gaines was and dropped a couple passes) and kept Gaines. I imagine the position battle at TE is Heiden, Royal, Moore, Gaines.
If we pick up Watson, I imagine we will keep Moore. So who do you guys think stays? We keep 3 or 4 TE's? I'm willing to bet we cut Heiden (age) and keep Royal/Gaines as runblockers. The better special teamer/runblocker would make the cut if we only keep 3 TE's (The first two being Moore and Ben Watson). I'm thinking it might go to Gaines. That guy is built like a bowling ball.
