I've seen the ads for it on cable. Look really good. Wish I could afford to have HBO. Oh well, eventually it will end up on one of the cable stations I DO get.

I can't remember where, perhaps Hulu, but I'm pretty certain that it has already been arranged that each episode will be viewable online after its first airing.
I'll see if I can find where.

There weren't many Grandpa's and Uncle's who didn't (fight there or somewhere in WW II).

"Uncle" Buck went in on D-Day + 2/3.
Really enjoyed HBO's "Band of Brothers." This will probably be as good or better, especially with Hanks and Dye involved.

As a hospice nurse I take care of that generation more than any other. One of the privledges of my job is getting to touch WWII through the men that fought in it. I've taken care of many men that landed both Omaha and Normandy. A tank commander that fought in the battle of the bulge. Most recently a gentleman that flew P-51 fighters, escorting bombers over German skys. Most of the men that I've met that spent time in Europe talk fondly of their time there. ( I don't ask them to relive the hardships) They talk of the friendships they created (and the girls they concurred).
On the other hand the few men that I've cared for that spent time in the south pacific... don't want to talk about it. Most change the subject. I don't push.

One of mine was a medic who was in the battle of the bulge.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

My great Uncle died from wounds in the Battle of the Bulge. The Germans were killing all the wounded GIs, so he had to lay in the snow, pretending to be dead, for a few days until the Americans retook the position. He was able to be flown to the States and lived for a few more weeks (which was good since my grandma and her mom got to see him), but he ended up dying there.
My one grandpa had a really bad back that kept him out of the war and my other grandpa was in the Navy and just about to leave from San Diego to the Pacific when his father died, and since my grandpa was going to be the sole breadwinner for the family, the Navy let him out so he could go to work.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Thanks for the reminder. I just watched that video. VERY touching, very well done. My dad is a small plane pilot. We spent many times together at airshows and flying together. Our dream was always to have a chance at flying a Mustang. It'll never happen more than likely but thats what dreams are.
In the mean time I continue to care for WW2 vets. It was an honor to shake the hand of one of my patients that flew Mustangs. Knowing his hand gripped that stick some 65 years ago... sent chills. That may be the closest I ever come to flying one. I thanked him for his service. He smiled, flattered. PRICELESS.
People ask me how I can do what I do for a living. Hospice. They have no idea the rewards I get from touching our national heros. Our heritage. I feel honored to be a part of these lives. No matter how brief my time with my patients is, it's time that my life is fuller.

Yeah, I agree. But then again Band of Brothers didn't blow me away with the first episode. It was the second one where they jumped out of the planes on D-Day that had my jaw on the ground. Let's hope the Pacific picks up from here.

Just noticed that Time Warner On Demand has part one of The Pacific! I almost called and ordered HBO just to watch this. If this is 1/2 as good as The Band of Brothers I will be thrilled.
Going to watch now.........

Yours is a good line, his is the actual official take on things  "Projection of power ashore" is a big part of the Navy's mission. I'm considering ordering HBO so that I can watch this. I did it with Band of Brothers, may as well do it for this. As for "better'... it'll be subjective as Band of Brothers already set the bar pretty high as far as what to expect. Simply matching it will make for an amazing mini-series. That said, the horror & violence levels of the fighting in the Pacific is supposed to be very accurately recreated without pulling any punches.

Good 1st episode, Question, How are they doing this series, one every night? Once a week? I know it's a 10 part mini series, I just can't wait to watch part 2. Well, it's looks like once a week on Sunday nights. The first episode is available on HBO free Here , but that's going to be the only one at HBO. The whole series will be released on DVD $79 or Blu-Ray $99 on June 15th

I am a HUGE WWII history buff and watch and read all I can about the conflict. I had relatives on both sides (US Army and Wehrmacht/SS) so I love to know all sides POV. I grew up listening to my Grandfathers stories about fighting in the jungles of the Philippines and watching old war movies with him like "They Were Expendable", "Tora Tora Tora", and "Battleground" (3 of his favorites) It is amazing to see the flicks and series coming out now a days like Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and Thin Red Line b/c they can tell the true story of how the fighting and conditions really were. Back in the day war movies were usually in black and white and very cleaned up or straight up propaganda. You rarely saw the blood and sights that always accompany war. Now with technology we are all gaining a new sense of respect for what our fathers/grandfathers suffered thru during that war. I wasn't blown away with the first episode of The Pacific like others, but am really looking forward to the series. Like someone else said BOB really didn't start to take off till Episode 3 (1 and 2 were shown together the first night) when they jumped into Normandy. I feel as we get into it the series will really grab you. I have been following the filming and rumors for 3 years and hate the mini-series format,,having to wait 7 damn days between episodes

Finally got to watch the second Episode last night. Definatly picked up the pace. But I still feel that this will not be as good as Band of Brothers. For some reason I feel the character development in BoB was much better. In this episode they were looking for a freind and I had trouble remembering who he was until they found him.
Great visuals lots of action in part 2 but again this won't top BoB, IMO.

The identity development (I want to avoid the use of "character" as these are real people and real lives that we are talking about) is definitely not as good (so far) as BoB, and the episodes feel shorter, though I haven't actually timed them.
In BoB, you were introduced to the unit and the people early on and you watched them each go through things.
In this, I barely even know who the one main guy is that keeps writing stuff.

I know his nickname is now "Peaches" after this episode but I can't remember his real name. The first episode of Band of Brothers was 2 hours long and you saw their whole training happen and were able to identify them. This one you saw 5min of them with their families and then they were shipped out. They didn't identify or build them up to the audience like Band of Brothers.
I knew Lt. Winters 2min into Band of Brothers, I don't know "Peaches" after two episodes.

I think the BoB episodes were over an hour long, like an hour and fifteen minutes or an hour and twenty minutes. I'm also having trouble figuring out who is who.

I am disappointed in this show so far . It seems too scattered and confused and what the hell is with the 10 min. rolling of credits before and after ? Hope it gets better .

I am hoping that Eugene ( the kid with the heart murmur that original was not able to enlist) is actually the main character in the fasion that Lt. Winters was in BoB. Maybe these two episodes were to introduce the major players for the rest of the series.
At least I hope that is the case. BoB was so well done that this is probably the cause of our disapointment. We want another BoB and it set the bar so high it is going to be difficult to match.

Pacific is about 3 main characters. I dont have their names right now. If you have HBO on demand it has clips about the main characters and the producers talk about them.
I did like Band of Brothers alot better.

Yes, the Pacific will be harder to follow because it has three main characters: Pfc. Robert Leckie (wrote the book Helmet for My Pillow), Pfc. Eugene "Sledgehammer" Sledge (wrote the book With the Old Breed, among others), and Sgt. John Basilone (I believe he was awarded the Medal of Honor).
I think it will be interesting to see how they link the three main characters stories together. I haven't been able to catch any episodes (no HBO), but I will definitely watch them when they come out on DVD. My dad is a former Marine (I don't like saying former...he's a Marine), and he has already said he will buy it when it comes out.

Yes, he earned the CMH at Guadalcanal. Episode II actually centers partly on that effort by him.
He later earned the Navy Cross (posthumously) on Iwo Jima. He was the only Marine in WW2 to earn both medals.

I did like Band of Brothers alot better.
A lot of it was based off Robert Leckey's (one of the main characters) book.
His son is a friend of my father. The book is called Helmet for My Pillow, it's a bit different, and the show left out some of my fav. parts (like the marine training and how Leckey was in Guadalcanal when they were being bombed and he jumped into an entrenchment for hte officers, and they looked at him like he had no right to be in there, and so Leckey left and ran for another place to hide rather than stay with the group of selfish officers)
Leckey wrote it which is the reason why i liked band of brothers so much more. Nothing against the guy, but as a lover of history, Ambrose is amazing. Leckey, a writer also, simply couldn't compare unfortunately.
Leckey's story does pick up, it's only the 2nd episode. Give it time..........
