Mixed feelings. I despise Delhomme and think he sucks, but at least this means we'll trade Quinn.

No need to despise a person that is such a good character guy. Anybody besides Deep have a scouting report on this guy.

I hate this move.

I'd rather waste away with Quinn not doing anything than watching Delhomme miss his WR'ers because he can't get his timing down.

I always thought Jake was a Gary Danielson kind of guy.

Clearly this is a "depth' signing. Seneca will prolly be the provisional starter.

I don't even want to speculate about BQ.

I am actually pretty excited the Quinn and Anderson era has come to an end. At least we got a QB that once had it.

Yeah, he was surrounded by great talent this last season and had the worst season of his career. Threw 18 INTS and is two years *will be three coming up in September* from a serious shoulder surgery. He's also 35 years old and is a complete mental wreck.

You're kidding yourself. Delhomme was brought in to start. IF he was going to be backup don't you think he would rather be a backup for the Saints?

He came to Cleveland to Start...end of Story.

I misspoke there. I don't despise him. I despise this move, purely because he sucks. He was awful last year with a very good line and arguably the best run game in the NFL.

I just don't see any logic in it... A 35 year-old QB coming off a 8 TD 18 INT year... I'd rather have declared DA the starter. There's no upside.

I'm assuming he's worked in some version of Holmgren's system under Fox, but I'd rather have Wallace if we just want someone with experience in the system... If the reports are true, he only wanted to come here if he's a starter.

The only logic I can see here is that we're drafting a QB... but who? Claussen? McCoy? We're not trading for Bradford.

I don't get this one. We want to move in a new direction - fine - but no objective person can say that they are confident that Quinn could not do as well as Delhomme this season.

Sorry, Jake, I like you as a person and maybe as our backup... but as a starter???

This signing looks to be more for veteran mentorship at the position. I'm loving the signing if it deals Brady Quinn off the roster. Sure he had a bad season, but he's better than what we had last year.

Why wouldn't Holmgren trade up for Bradford? He traded multiple picks for Hasselbeck and Heckert has a history of trading up for players.

I would rather them trade up and draft the QB they want instead taking the one that drops to them.

Only one problem there. If the Rams are set on Bradford, and it looks like they are, then that is way too expensive.

j/k

the signing of Jake dosent mean Quinn will be traded, the signing just gives us more options for a trade.

Now reality says / shows, yes chances are Quinn will be traded, but now it's gonna be easier knowing we have another option. Signing Jake just speeds up the possiblity of a Quinn trade, it wouldnt suprise me if we wait until the draft or after the draft, there will be a team looking to draft a QB and wont be able too becuase they will be off the board, when that happens, quinns value will go up and it might be nice to start stock piling a few extra picks for next year, 2011.

Jake is our starter, He wasnt brought in to sit behind Seneca or Ratliff or Quinn.

i'm ok with Jake, I'll atleast give him a chance, he's alot better going this season than it would be with some we've had in the past. Remember people said kurt warner was washed up after he left the giants & signed with cardniles, am I comparing, heck no, but sometimes a fresh start is good I'm hoping that in Jake.

The Rams want people to think they are set on Bradford only their FO truly knows either way. Like I said I'm not ruling out that possibility.

Think about it..what is a Peyton Manning/ Philip Rivers worth? If Holmgren really felt 100% confident in Bradford then I wouldn't much care what the price was. Our 1st, Rogers, Quinn, a third this year and 2nd next year wouldn't even bother me if Holmgren was that much in love with Bradford.

Until we have a franchise QB every other position becomes a secondary need.

I am glad if all the junk that accumulated around the two QBs can be laid to rest. Can't see Jake as a starter easily, so assume it is a backstop for SW. But I also do not know what kind of OC gameplan (hopefully more aggressive, ambitious, and attack oriented than three middles and punt) will be called for. This should open whatever door and its terms for the end of BQ as a Brown. If he is ours, then good luck to anybody we need to succeed. Welcome aboard.

Source: Browns, Delhomme reach dealEmail Print Comments 30Share49tweetBy Adam Schefter

In the same week it traded for Seneca Wallace, Cleveland reached agreement on a two-year deal with quarterback Jake Delhomme, according to an NFL source.

Now, a Browns quarterback depth chart that once featured Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson is expected to feature Delhomme and Wallace.

Delhomme was schedued to visit the Saints this weekend, a trip that no longer will be necessary.

The Browns have shopped Quinn and now that Delhomme will land in Cleveland, those trade talks could intensify.

Adam Schefter is ESPN's NFL Insider.

There's a big difference between Peyton/Rivers and Bradford. As much as I love Bradford, he is far from a sure thing, especially with his shoulder.

To give up that much for a player who could very easily bust is foolish. One biig injury (again, a distinct possibility) could end his career and make him a terrible pick.

i like the move, but i am surprised. i mean let's not joke around, this is probably a stop-gap until we draft someone next year...

i wonder what happens with brady. but if anyone knows how to handle a qb situation, it's the guy running our team, so i'm definitely interested to see how this pans out.

delhomme was awful last year, but maybe a change of scenery will help. i love the guys passion, he'll have a solid tight end, a pretty good young #2 in massaquoi, and we still lack that big #1 type receiver.

but i think if we can run the ball like we did at the end of the year, it could be set up for a nice season.

He depends on how much you are in love with that player. I am in no way in the same talent evaluator as Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert. Shoot you could say the injury thing about every 1st round pick so that concern is very player acquired...Remember Bentley? Winslow? Just the chance you take.

Agreed. I would all but bet your looking at JD starting and a young QB brought in (bradford, clausen, mccoy...etc). I don't think it will be a developmental prospect, but somebody they think they can have ready by next year. The reason I say this is because JD is 35 years old and doesn't have 2 or 3 years left in the tank (heck I don't think he has 1, but that's besides the point).

My best guess is we will trade up to get SB or Claussen. JD will begin the year as the starter, and when we are officially out of the playoff race (around week 9 I imagine..lol) then the new kid will take over. This isn't as bad as some of you guys are making it out to be, because JD is being put here as a 1 year starter and mentor.

Now if you don't want a QB early your going to be pissed..lol...because I would all but guarantee we will end up with one in rounds 1 (most likely) or 2. These guys put a premium on the QB position, and if they deem SB or JC as the answer they will take them no doubt.

Browns pick up Delhomme for two years
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 13, 2010 6:00 PM ET
In the span of five days, Mike Holmgren has brought two quarterbacks to Cleveland to replace the guys that he inherited.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Jake Delhomme agreed to a two-year deal with the Browns. He won't make his visit to New Orleans.

Delhomme wanted a chance to start, and he'll have that in Cleveland. He and Seneca Wallace figure to compete to start. Based on Wallace's history with Holmgren and Delhomme's play last season, we'd bet on Wallace.

It's a motley quarterback group for the Browns, whose fans should wonder how much they are really upgrading. Clearly, Holmgren and Eric Mangini had no use for Brady Quinn, who is as good as gone.

The Delhomme looks especially bad because it reduces the team's flexibility. Forget trading for one of the Eagles quarterbacks and the team still needs to find a quarterback to develop.

Holmgren's track record with quarterbacks is outstanding, so that helps him get the benefit of the doubt. But not for long.

We are right back to where we were in 1999, drafting a qb. What a waste of a decade. A monkey could have put us in a better position in 11 years.

You're willing to give up the #7 pick and at least either our 2nd rounder this year or our 1st rounder next year for SB or JC? That's what it's going to take and I can't believe Holmgren is willing to give up that much... We have too many holes. We aren't just a QB away.

EDIT - this was a reply to Loki... sorry, BigWillie.

well, technically, we would have to draft a qb regardless... 32-33 and a QB is just about the end of the line.

we just don't have many winning season over the last 10 years

And thereby passing on Berry, Spikes, Thomas, Spiller, Iupati, Okung, etc etc.

We ain't gonna get jack-crap for Quinn and are gonna take an unproven, overpriced, overhyped rookie OB when what we need to do is run the ball and play defense.

We have around 11-13 draft picks. I am willing to bet that we aren't going to be drafting 11-13 people.

Jake Delhomme won’t be coming to the New Orleans Saints as a backup quarterback.

He reportedly has agreed to a contract with Cleveland, where he could have a shot at the starting job. The Saints were planning on Delhomme visiting this weekend, but all they could offer him was a backup role behind Drew Brees.

Although Delhomme began his career with the Saints and is a Louisiana native, the chance to compete for a starting job with the Browns apparently outweighed the chance to come back home. Delhomme had been the starter in Carolina since 2003, but was released recently after a disastrous 2009 season.

Carolina plans to go with Matt Moore as the starter. But, ironically, Delhomme signing with Cleveland could give them another option. Numerous reports have said the Browns are shopping quarterback Brady Quinn for a potential trade and Carolina might have some interest.
http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/tag/_/name/free-agency-2010

Hope that ends the whole Delhomme as a backup talk

Agree, & thats behind why we signed Jake & traded for seneca, this way we can use our 11-13 picks on mostly Defence, sign another RB & Guard and we can use all our picks on Def.
