Yeah cause that's what the last 5 Superbowl matchups have been about right? Didn't the team that ran the ball best and had the best defense not even make the Superbowl? Yeah okay...keep thinking that draconian thought. Show me a Superbowl that hasn't had a top 10 QB in it? Trent Dilfer 10 years ago?

I don't get this one. We want to move in a new direction - fine - but no objective person can say that they are confident that Quinn could not do as well as Delhomme this season.
Two words: Veteran leadership.
Thats exactly what DA and Quinn have lacked on a young, developing team. The mentality that this is MY job and at least has the confidence to execute a game plan. Mangini absolutely screwed with our QB's heads too much last season and never allowed for continuity. Thats now past history.
I love this move. JD is a realist he's coming to the end, but wants one more chance to produce and hand off his knowledge to his succesor. We may not need the "future" QB this year with so many other needs. Again, this is a process Holmgren has done before. Let the man work. Perhaps we do draft one in April, or wait to see what plays out during the year and free agency next year. We now have the teacher in place. I have no doubt his apprentice will be here before his contract expires.
I also want to echo what Toad has been saying about free agency, and how players don't want to come to Cleveland. By my count, JD makes this 4 for 4 on players visiting and signing. Money IS the biggest factor, but its obvious that the 4 new signees might just as well found a home somewhere else. They have to like what they heard and see happening here, and that DOES factor in.
And heres hoping Fargas makes that count 5 for 5.

True.
I also think and have infinite more trust in him and Heckert finding a QB rather than those idiots. I'm fairly certain we will see a 2-3 round QB. I'm hoping for Colt McCoy, personally.

Well, it didn't take Holmgren very long to make his "trust me, I know what I'm doing" move.
So I guess the question is: do you trust him?
I'm gonna go ahead and say "yes". Besides, what choice do we have?

We have 11 picks - but trading our 5th and 6th round picks isn't going to get us a top 4 draft pick.

jc... Not sure how this is an upgrade, really. Wallace and Delhomme. Really?? There better be more to these two signings than we know...otherwise, I don't see how it makes much sense.

This week has been so lame for our QB situation.... a career backup and a barely average starter whose best years are most likely behind him.

Barely average QB play would have looked pretty good last year around week 13

You really can't see the upgrade? I mean, I hate the Delhomme signing and would rather have see Quinn starting, but for the future this is likely a good thing. Stop wasting time with Quinn and draft a QB. Holmgren did the same thing in Seattle when he got there when he signed Trent Dilfer and traded for Matt Hasselbeck.

I figured the fact that we had any interest in Delhomme at all would have been a pretty big clue as to what the chances were the BQ would have been starting here. And lets face it, BQ's upside is that of game manager for a good team.
He's not going to get get much better than what we see right now.

I'm all for veteran leadership. i wanted us to get Kitna last year when he went to the Cowgirls. But, Delhomme wants to start - but he clearly isn't capable after the shoulder surgery. 8TDs and 18 INTs with that team?
Look, if he were coming here to tutor a DA or Quinn, I'd like the move. But, I feel this move means we have to go get a young QB this year, and I just don't see one that makes sense where we're picking.
Maybe LeFevour in the later rounds or something... The other side of it is that I'm not sure I agree with drafting a rook when I don't believe you can objectively say Quinn is a bust. I don't like what I've seen in the kid, but how is he any different than Claussen?
Go Browns!!

Yet another Nice move! I like every move we have done so far!! Great 1 year fix with a solid vet, maybe he can go 2 years until Mike finds our real QB. Finally we can get rid of Brady - maybe even get a 4th rounder for him or package him with something to get a player? Who cares.. the guy was overrated and he couldn't throw past 10-15 yards.

I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Jake had an awful year but that doesn't mean he is washed up. Seneca is nothing more then a career backup to me but Holgrem knows him best of all. Hasselbeck is a pretty fair QB so maybe he is starting material?
Whatever prompted these moves it is certainly not the end game inmy mind. lucks like Holgrem is looking to upgrade ... pore QB play with at least average. Sure it's not what we all want but you gotta start somewhere.

I don't understand all of the anger about this signing? This team needs veteran leadership and we got that with Delhomme. With youngsters at every skipp osition on offense, the experience that Delhomme has can be very valuable. So didn't have the best season last yea, but what better veteran was there out there that would not cost us more draft picks to acquire? Plus, Delhomme has been succesful at this level and has guided a team to a Super Bowl. Regardless of what capacity we plan on using him, I think this is going to be great for the team. There sure will be a lot of crow to eat f he ends of having a good season for us!

Because I'm sure Holmgren sees the value of a veteran QB who has been there before and teaching said young draft pick.

I won't have to eat crow because I'm not angry...this whole thing is just frustrating. It has been since 1999 and I'm getting tired of it. I don't see either of these new guys as our answer. I was hoping to do something more solid -- more long-term -- at the qb position than "give it another year or two".

I never said that was Delhomme...show me where I did? My point is that we absolutely need a top 10 QB and until we have one everything else is secondary. Holmgren is going to go after a QB who he thinks will become a top 10 QB...that maybe this year in the draft or even next year. My point running the ball and playing defense is important but the Passing game is the single most important part of NFL football in this day and age. This isn't Jim Brown football anymore. Did the Saints D even rank in the top 15? Was their rush offense in the top 5? I guarantee their pass offense was in the top 2.

That is a very good question. Two things come to my mind as possible reasons.
1. Holgrem has seen more than enough of Quinn through scouting and practice videos to realize he isn't worth the effort.
2 Quinn might have potential but there are other problems with him to make it not worthwhile to keep him. It doesn't have to be locker room issues but maybe the organization needing a fresh start after the QB fiasco's of the past three years. One thing is for sure tome. If they thought Quinn had what it takes to be a top notch QB they wouldn't be letting him go.

And I'll be first to line up,....
No one is saying he can't be "helpful."
What it means is that, we're drafting another new QB, and passing on other outstanding talent.
I don't buy the veteran leadership talk. These are professionals. Why did Carolina tell him to walk ? Was he "out of " leadership ?

I'm hanging my hat on the fact that Holgrem is known for picking QBs. Neither move gives me much faith in the up coming year but at least we have someone running the show that is suppose to be an expert.
However, with our luck this will be the first time he really blows it. Both of these guys will turn out useless and Quinn will go on and lead a team to a Super Bowl.

kash...some on this board are never satisfied when it comes to the QB position
IMO, another outstanding move by Holmgren and Heckert, adding an experienced NFL QB who has been successful in the NFL until he sustained a serious elbow injury in 2007, that required "Tommy John" surgery.
Delhomme returned in 2008 and lead the Panthers to a 12-4 season and the playoffs. Last season Delhomme had his worst season as a pro starting 11 games before suffering a season ending broken finger on this throwing hand.
Some Browns fans are ready to bury Delhomme and declare he is washed up. Delhomme is not being brought to Cleveland to be the long term answer, folks. He is going to be given a chance to compete for the starting job with Seneca Wallace. It's obvious that Holmgren is going to add a young QB who will be projected as the long term answer for the Browns at QB.
Delhomme and Wallace are here to help mentor the Browns young prospect, whomever that is. So relax and cut the guy some slack and try to look at the bigger picture.

I always thought of Delhomme as a sort of poor man's Kurt Warner. They just reminded me of each other, except one is better.
After last year's performance, Jake might be considered a really, really poor man's Warner - but maybe his recuperation from surgery was longer than expected. They say it takes a baseball pitcher 2 years to return fully from elbow or shoulder surgery ... maybe that was the case with Jake. 35 isn't that old to play QB.

I'm sure if the guy isn't the right fit he won't be starting. However he can help tutor any young QBs we acquire in the draft (if we do go that route). This is a no lose situation.

You know I think this move is more telling everyone - we are rebuilding & clearly the 2 guys that were here at QB weren't the answers.
Why waste another year with BQ? Why? He isn't the guy, he is one of those guys who dont do anything great - but isn't awful. You wont ever in the big picture win with him.
so try to catch lighting in a bottle with Jake. It's a trend league, we see others doing this kinda like Miami, sure Jake isn't amazing.. but if he is just a stop-gap or maybe even a little more for a couple years until Mike finds his guy - cool. Really Mike knows what he is doing, one thing he knows is QB's.
Actually I hope that big Oline guy is there for us in the first round 7th pick.. I forget his name, he is starting to get some pub on espn. If we bookend our line with Joe & this dude. Damn, we will be back to 2007 with DA where you don't need a amazing QB.
I'd go with the Oline as much as we can, that helps the RB's, QB and even our young WR's!! They have a little more time to run patterns, etc.

Anybody besides Deep have a scouting report on this guy.
Here is my take on Delhomme. Let me preface by saying I have been a fan of Jake for a long time. All the way back to when he played for the Saints.
When Jake took over at Qb down here in Carolina he had some very good years. He led the Panthers to a superbowl and barely lost a superbowl shootout to Tom Brady and the Patriots. He has always been kind of the gunslinger type QB. A mini Brett Farve (same style not talented not as reckless).
3 seasons ago he had an arm injury. I was never quite clear on exactly what that injury was. He came back 2 years ago and at the start of the season seemed to light it up. Then what frequently happens to Qbs that come back from arm injury happened. His arm got tired. There was a point when it became clear that he lost some velocity on the football and his performance began to deteriorate. Culminatingin a playoff loss where he single-handedly lost the game for the Panthers. He threw like 20 interceptions.
This past season I fully expected Jake to have regained that arm strength and have a good season. Instead he had a truly crappy season. A few things happened that contributed to his poor season.
1 - I don't know if he ever did recover that arm strength. He just didn't have that same zip. Not even what he had to start the 2008 season (1st season back after injury) which was subpar for him. Perhaps he re-injured his arm? I don't know, just a hypothesis.
2 - That playoff game really seemed to have affected his psyche which got progressively worse as the fans really turned on him.
3 - Rip Sherer got ahold of him. He changed Jake's mechanics to try to minimize Jake's risk for re-injuring his arm. Perhaps this explains #1.
So is Delhomme a good pick up? Depends. Has he recouped that lost arm strength? Will a new setting repair his psyche? If the answer to both is yes then he is a good pickup. If the answer to either is no then he will ne a quality backup Qb
just my 2 cents.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

Dave...you are right to compare the career paths of Warner and Delhomme as both played in NFL E before getting their chance in the NFL.
Also, both had success once they earned their starting jobs. Warner had 3 outstanding years with the Rams before his star began to fade in 2002 and 2003. I'm sure that many thought Warner was all used up at that point, but Warner finished his career with 3 seasons of very strong performances.
Don't be so quick to declare Delhomme a bust...
I'm sure in Holmgren and Heckerts view, the least Delhomme will be for the Browns is a good character mentor to a young prospect, yet to be drafted or traded for.
We never know, Delhomme might end up pulling a Kurt Warner or Brett Favre, keeping his young replacement benched longer than anyone expected.
