I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that IF Delhomme is our starter that he will be the best QB we have seen since our return. I know that isn't saying alot but I think he's going to prove alot of you wrong. The guy has tons of heart and I really believe that MH knows what he is doing here. We are not in a position to win it all right now and Jake is a fine bridge to whoever takes over at QB. I've seen this guy play quite a bit and he is a solid veteran QB. It's not like there were any others available anyway.

What would you like to wager that you are wrong?! Because you are.

Reminded that he previously has stated he was against holding an "open competition" at quarterback, Holmgren said there is a difference in what he is trying to do.

"The difference is you set up the criteria and how you're going to judge, but then you make a decision," he said. "You don't go into the season alternating quarterbacks."

No matter the final field, Holmgren said he hoped that a starter would be named some time before training camp.

"But I'm going to kind of set the table, and then it's really Coach (Eric) Mangini's call," he said.

It sounds like Holmgren is backtracking a little. At first he said no competition.

Peyton Manning wouldn't be able to top DA's 2007 season with our "talent" on this current team.

My thoughts are : Delhomme was brought in to be the backup QB. The only way he starts is if Wallace gets hurt or completely falls on his face and Delhomme lights it up during the preseason. Holmgren and Heckert will probably draft a developmental guy somewhere in the mid to late rnds. Both these QBs are just stop gaps until we can either draft or trade for a QB, or our developmental QB proves capable.

I don't waste my time on guys that THINK they know all the answers. You probably haven't even seen the guy play because if you have you know that he had one bad season in this league. Many Panther fans still love Jake Delhomme and understand that most players have down years especially when there O-Line was as bad as it was last season.

But his base salary is only $900,000 the majority is probably incentives that he only makes if he's playing.

I cannot believe how many fans think they know more than Holmgren/Heckert, etc. We have got to have the the most annoying and know it all fanbase ever!!!! I enjoy reading a lot of what some say on here but so many whiny fans that for the most part don't have a clue. JMHO

There are down years. And then there are what Jake Delhomme had last year.

If he had anything left do you think the Panthers would him $12 million to not play for them?

lol @ strike two being trading Quinn.

I still don't understand the infatuation with Quinn. He has showed absolutely nothing so far in his career that would indicate being anything more than a game manager.

100% agreed. I think some of these guys would rather draft a new QB every year so that way they can dream that we have the next Peyton Manning on the bench. There is a reason why championship teams have old vets on their squads. They teach the younger guys how to do it. Who was teaching Quinn or Anderson? Ratliff?? Who was teaching him? This is how good teams are made and for those that can't see this then you do not understand football......period!

I don't care if you understand. I don't think he was ever given the proper opportunity to start after we paid such a high price to get him. You'll understand when we trade him to the donks and he goes all John Elway on us.

Watch that happen then tell me about my mancrush.

I'm not sold on the fact Quinn can't be the QB of the future here. If you are THEN YOU ARE... not me.

Are you saying that the Panthers would not have made a mistake?

And on the flip side....

Are some of you saying that Heckert and Holmgren are not going to make a mistake?

Why not just wait till you see how it plays out on the field.

IF you call knowing not to give a 35 yr old crappy QB who threw 18 ints with an amazing line, top 10 wr, and best run game in the league $7 million than yeah I guess I am a "know it all fan". HAHA FAIL on you.

Delhomme will get killed out there against AFC teams... Tougher talent.

Quinn.. step it up.. this is your chance to shut the haters up.

Only thing I can think right now, is Delhomme is the best talent at the LOWEST price..

He needs a change of scenario...he lost his confidence in Carolina after the 2008 playoffs. He is not going to have the pressure to win it all here like he had with the Panthers. One season doesn't mean he's the bum you guys are making him out to be. He had 4 games below a 60.0 QB rating (that resulted in 13 of those 18 ints) last season in 11 starts with a bad pass blocking O-Line compared to the Quinn/Anderson combo of 11 games under a 60.0 QB rating in 16 starts. Of games that they appeared in that number goes to 13 appearances by Quinn or Anderson in which they had a QB rating of under 60.0.

I'll take my chances with a QB that had a down year with tons of experience that can help with any young QBs that we bring in.

An amazing run-blocking line you mean. Their pass blocking was not good at all bro. Where you getting your info from? You don't even know what your talking about (your name says it all) and I don't have time to teach you....nighty night.

One would think! But I guess we dont have the time to teach that "bro"... Guess he forgot to mention how Delhomme held on to the ball longer than rapistburger, and that Moore came in and lit it up, played far better than a 12 year vet of the league. I dont think we are going to change anyone's mind here, though I did like how he failed to take me up on my bet. Answers a lot of questions.

BTW my name derives from the hype on the old boards when ppl were outraged that Davis didnt reach the probowl after leading the league in tackles. Its a tongue and cheek username, but not always caught by uptight members...

I honestly hate this type of attitude. Phil Savage, Butch Davis, and Carmen Policy know a lot more than any of us about the game of football, yet they still screwed up plenty. The most brilliant of football minds out there mess up, and when they do, we can criticize them. Just because they are more knowledgeable than us, does not mean they did not make a mistake.

It remains to be seen whether signing Delhomme was a mistake or not, though I definitely dislike the move. In the mean time, before we know if it was a good or bad move, I will express my opinion on it.

Sorry if I'm opining whilst late to this party, but five pages is probably more than I'm willing to scroll at the moment.

I get the "addition by subtraction" angle, as anything to rid ourselves of Quinn was essential. Forget whether or not you believe in Quinn, the reality is Holmgren can pay all the lip service he can muster but he pretty-well knew he was going to bring in his own guy the moment he signed on. This was inevitable.

So, for my money, I'm content to be rid of Quinn now. It's better than investing more time into him, which would be, to me, like all the extra time we wasted on Couch and on Frye.

I'd imagine that without reading all the pages, the vast majority not only dislike this move, they hate it. Gotta love football fans.

Delhomme is one-year removed from a solid season, preceded by numerous solid seasons. I think he's a better bet than most would believe. He's a respected guy who has had some success in this league, and has been a solid starter. Of course he isn't the perfect guy, otherwise he wouldn't be available, would he?

Delhomme is Holmgren's Trent Dilfer. Now we get to see who Holmgren's Charlie Frye will be...........................

God I hope you're wrong, as Dilfer is my most hated Browns player of all time. He was single handedly the worst QB/football player I have ever witnessed play for the Browns. I do not want a clone of his.

In 2008 Delhomme completed 60% of his passes, had 15 TD's and 12 INT's. Solid? I say average. He also had 6 (6!!!) turnovers in a playoff loss to the Cardinals.

Dilfer was brought to the Seahawks to backup Matt Hasselbeck. Seneca Wallace will be 30 years old when the season starts. Matt Hasselback was 25 years old when he was brought to the Seahawks in 2001.

Pretty close. Both undersized, mobile, and gutsy. Neither has the big arm. McCoy probably has more intangibles and IMHO is a better prospect, but point taken and agreed upon.

This also puts to rest the idea that Wallace was brought here to start. At least in that regard I'm resting a little easier. I was afraid Holmgren had fallen from his good senses.

Now, James Walker is saying that Quinn would become Delhomme's backup if we can't get value for him.

Horsepucky.

Quinn can't remain on this team.

I really don't know what to think of this guy. I never followed his career. He had two 4 int games last year as well as a 3 pick day.

His QB ratings were all over the place. He had a 115.8 one week and two of under 15.

He threw for over 7.2 yards a pass in four games (high of 8.1) and on the other end he had two games where he only had 3.8 and one of 4.3

He had four games with comp.% over 60 and another four 50% or worse.

He attempted over 40 passes 3 times and had 17 or less 3 times.

If I didn't know better I would have thought I was reading DA's stat lines.

The only thing good about his stats last year is that his last month was his best.

Anyway i would like to hear opinions of people who actually saw him play. Stats are irrelevant without proper context.
