Jake is obviously the leader at the QB position, listening to Holmgren right now. He's pretty high on Jake as a leader of men.
you had a good run Hank.

Well, at this point, since he's dealt the cards, he has to be.
And regardless of the past three days' "enlightenment" -- I will too.
Without starting a poll thread, I have a serious question for everyone,...should Wallace start, kind of "automatically" and be tutored by JD, or, as I have predicted based only on his too-high a salary of 7 mil, is JD the AutoLotto starter ?
I guess I would like to see if we could go to camp without ANY QB controversy.

It's kind of obvious Delhomme is going into the season as the starter. Do I agree with that? No. Would I rather have Wallace starting? Yes.

Jake signs a 7 mil deal and Seneca is dealt to us for a 6th...i dont know his money but with just that thought......IMO this was obvious.

I think, based on the money angle, you're right. The "rest of the story" is, depending on what we do in the draft, perhaps Delhomme's major function will be to tutor the new guy.
But I don't think JD thinks that at all, unless he's been told to deposit his check at the bank and play along,....
Hell, if Wallace works out, can he hold it together for 4-5 years while we continue to Holmgrenize ?

I agree. Peter King summed it up frighteningly well:
Quote:
Check out Delhomme's numbers in his last 12 starts, compared to JaMarcus Russell's in his last 12 starts:
QB Comp. Att. Pct. Yds. TD Int. Rating
Delhomme 195 355 .549 2220 9 23 55.4
Russell 145 283 .512 1690 8 11 62.9

Watched the last part of the presser...did anyone catch Holmgren's comment about Delhomme's problems last season, "not being physical"...?
In other words...the way I take it, Delhomme lost his confidence ...
Holmgren said he would be concerned had Jake's problem been physical...in other words, Holmgren and the coaching staff feel they can deal with Dehomme's mental issues.

He's gotta be at least the 1st option to start. Then if he stinks it up we go to Wallace.
At the very least Delhomme is an excellent teammate who want moan and groan if/when he loses his starting spot to a youngster (i.e. Trent Dilfer).

Nothing in Seneca Wallace's 7 years in the NFL lends itself to me believing he is anything more than a bandaid starter or a back-up.
Considering he was a backup behind A QB that was entrenched that might not be true. Then again he did resign as a backup so maybe there was no interest in him.
I'm just saying that nothing in his numbers is overly impressive. in 2008, the only season he really saw any extended action, he had a good TD/INT ratio, which is a positive...
He may come here and start over Delhomme, I don't know but he's a bandaid, maybe a longer term bandaid than Delhomme if he can play well, but a couple year fix at best.
Let me put it this way, I sincerely hope that in a year or two, we are talking about him as the weak link because the rest of the team is vastly improved... is that fair?

If you get a chance watch the presser. You will get a pretty good idea where Holmgren is coming from.

J/C So we dumped 2 high character guys that were also "excellent teammates" for an interception machine and someone elses career backup?? I like how the peeps on the board speak of MH as being this QB guru and how they think he can get Delhomme and Wallace to improve under his tutelage but yet BQ is beyond repair??? Double standard?? I think yes... Have any of you actually seen Delhome play?? I know Daman will pull some highlight reel to site his response or some article that was mentioned but in all seriousness, the dude was the bottom tier of ALL starting QB's the past season and and even the end of the 08... And MH says TC is going to be a "heck of a competetion?" LMFAO now that is FREAKING CLASSIC!! Board members feel free to pile on me here AFTER the season starts and IF I am proven wrong... I got some swamp land down in Fla for sale BTW to any of you interested homers... BTW DAMAN before you take that one seriously it was a joke... Ya'll enjoy the Berea Brew that this F.O. is forcing down your throats and I will remain in the WTF crowd that has us looking like the national laughing stocks... I hope AFTER the draft I am not able to say this but it is truly sad to be a Browns fan right now...

It's irrelevant and almost impossible to guess what would have happened if we did have a cap this year. We don't, so we opened the bank vault up to secure a guy that can at least keep the seat warm until <insert drafted QB's name here> is ready to take the spot in week 6, 11, or 15 (or at the start of 2011 - assuming we even have a 2011 season).
And that money is also to ensure Delhomme's teaching abliity for next season too. Well, unless we cut him outright.
So, Delhomme is only going to be the QB for probably part of this season. I for one am excited. We're going to have a new young QB to pine over that will have a team with a bunch of young talent ready to make a move in 2011 (right about when pittsburgh/Baltimore gets too old & the Bengals fall apart again).
This also means no DA, no Quinn, and no DA vs. Quinn. At the very least, we will have something new to argue about. Look, Quinn couldn't be on the team if MH was lining up to draft Bradford, McCoy, or even Tebow. You can't have two young guys waiting to take over the team. It would fracture the team.
If MH brought in McNabb to compete this season, we would fall flat on our faces and hurt our future more than doing this move. This is good guys, it really sets us up for success (as long as MH and company make the right call in this draft).
Go Browns!
...and if it blows up in our faces, so what, I'll be here for the next 15 rebuilds. It's who I am.

despite DA's remarks, he was still a high character guy who was very well liked by his teammates. quinn on the other hand... Quote:
So what happened? The short answer is that a prolonged holdout ruined his standing with his new teammates and Quinn never recovered. He just didn’t click with his teammates, and he certainly didn’t click with Eric Mangini. It didn’t help that he couldn’t stay healthy, but over the years several Browns have taken quiet snipes at Quinn’s self-absorbed persona, and he rarely socialized with any teammates.

In Delhomme's defense, look who he had to turn to, his QB coach..the guy who is supposed to help a QB out of a slump...Rip Scherer, the guy who did such a great job here in Cleveland, which was his first job in the NFL.
Reading Scherer bio, his claim to fame is the 3700 yd season Anderson had in 2007...but no mention about what happened after 2007.
I have confidence that Holmgren can help Delhomme out of what ever is bothering him...we shall see.

If you think about it, Delhomme never did have an offensive guru in Carolina to help him out.
I'm not a big John Fox guy...I think he's way too conservative and can't spell offense.
I think Holmgren's gonna work hard with Delhomme over the offseason, and it could be the saving grace.

2. I think I can't wait to hear Mike Holmgren's and Eric Mangini's explanation for paying Jake Delhomme $7 million in 2010. I really can't wait.
My guess? We didn't see much in the way of veterans out there that we felt was better (or as available).... so we threw extra cash at him up front to get him here instead of going to New Orleans.
Pickins' were slim, and none of what was available was a long-term answer... so do what ya gotta do to lock up your target.
i agree. I will also add with a uncapped year, they wanted to get the bulk out of the way this season.
Really, I don't understand why anybody really cares what the guy makes this year.
I could see if we were having to rob Peter to pay Paul, but that really isn't the case...for this year or possibly for any year going forward.
If the guy paying the bills is cool with it, so am I.

j/c When a team brings in a veteran player, do they have that player go through a workout? If JD worked out and showed that he is physically good-to-go, I suppose I would defer to MH's judgement. (As if I have a choice ) I was not happy about the trade yesterday...I am ok with the trade today...I expect that I will be darn skippy with the trade after training camp...at least I hope so anyway. Serioiusly...do we know if JD went through a workout?

I doubt it. I don't ever recall a veteran having a workout. Physical and stuff like that, but we aren't talking some rookie from the sandlots.

Yeah, I don't expect a world beating performance by Delhomme, but I do expect better numbers. I know that the Arizona game would probably irk the crap out of me.
Hopefully another sure handed WR shows up to help him too.

I guess I need to add onto the list of starting Browns QBs since it's official we will have yet another new one this season (without Quinn or Anderson on the team).
12 years, 9 different opening day starters.
2010 Seneca Wallace or Delhomme ? 2009 Brady Quinn 2008 Derek Anderson 2007 Charlie Frye (1 half only, but he was the guy who started) 2006 Charlie Frye 2005 Trent Dilfer 2004 Jeff Garcia 2003 Kelly Holcomb 2002 Kelly Holcomb 2001 Tim Couch 2000 Tim Couch 1999 Ty Detmer

What if his arm/shoulder is toast? I read where MH said something about "throws on the tape" being good throws. Surely he and Co. have looked at a load of tape. I hope so. I would have made him throw the ball. Willie rule: If you are under 18 or over 31, you must throw the ball before we sign you.

j/c.... who were Delhomme's receivers the past two years?
I know of Steve Smith, but I can't think of a single one other than that. How about TE's?
Ok, I see that they had in Mushin Mohammed for 2009, but he missed two games early in Nov, and had only one good game after that until week 17 when Steve Smith was out -- and they didn't really have diddly beyond those two. They have two very good running backs, and I'm guessing an outstanding run-blocking line... but how is that line in pass blocking? Looking at NFL.com's stats, that line gave up more sacks and hits to the QB than ours did..... and we had John Freakin St. Clair at RT (and went through a couple of QB's!). They would normally have Jordan Gross in there, but he went on IR in November.
I'm not trying to make excuses for him, but I am trying to get an understanding of what went on there last year.... and with the exception of Moose & Steve Smith, it just doesn't appear that there was much help there. Their #3 WR had a whopping 17 receptions. Their #1 TE averaged only 8 ypc.
No doubt Delhomme sucked this past season, but I'm not certain that I'd lay all the blame at his feet -- it's looking like a rather crappy situation, and their offensive schemes have ALWAYS been rather anemic.
Browns is the Browns

Man talk about Groundhog Day in Cleveland. Ever 1999 all the Browns have ever employed at QB is medicocre signal callers. And each QB has underperformed in his own way. Have the Browns ever had a QB on the upside instead of the downside of a career? Or a couple times they've caught lightning in a bottle. But not once have the Browns had a signal caller you could call at that time "he's the best in the AFC North" or "he's in the Top 12 of the AFC" Holmgren is still living off the past with Farve and Brunell. Just replace MH with Savage and Savage would be getting ripped like a doberman chew toy as far as bringing Wallace and Delhomme
