but Holmgren isn't our coach.
So my question is: why does everyone comment on the boards and on the radio about his ability and history on grooming QBs?
Won't he be too busy in the FO to go down and coach?
Or am I missing something here?

Cuz he still has the eye for the QB's and will pick the QB's...he's also imparting his offensive wisdom on Coach and Daboll.

He has said that Mangini asked him to get involved with the QB's, so he will.

I think Holmgren is out there answering the questions because he's done it before and it takes pressure off both Heckert and Mangini. We all know dealing with the media wasn't always Mangini's strongest attribute.

He's gonna get all the praise now.. but if we start losing.. it will be Mangini's fault..
Same ol' same ol'... just a different day.

He is definitely not coaching, but if anyone thinks that he will not be involved, at some level (particularly with the QB's, they're crazy.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I'm glad somebody brought this up. I can see why people (myself included) are confused regarding the heiarchy of this team.
Here's my opinion: Holmgren has heavy if not all input on offensive personnel decisions. Holmgren controls everything that has to do with our offense. Holmgren has orchestrated all of our offensive FA acquisitions so far. For draft day, Holmgren will probably tell Heckert the type of players the Browns need. He'll probably tell him that the offense needs wr's and o-tackles. He then may tell Heckert what he wants as far as size, speed, etc.
Now defense is a different story. Here, I think Holmgren told Heckert to confer with Mangini and other defensive leadership personnel, to discuss the needs of the defense, and the sort of players that are needed to fill the holes.
To take this one step further, again, this is just my opinion. I think Holmgren feels that this offense has a lot of what it needs to compete. I think that he made the decision to address offensive needs via free agency/trades. - Hence the signings of Pashos, Delhomme, Wallace, and Watson. I wouldn't be surprised if the Browns announce the signing of wide receiver in a couple days. Completing the offense through free agency is one part of Holmgren's strategy. The next part is to build the defense through the draft. - I feel that at least 80% of our draft picks will be on defensive players. - I don't know if we will be addressing specific positions, or if we will take best defensive player available in each round. Figure that we have some good d lineman already, and that's about all. - This tells me that we will take the best db/lb available in round 1, and then again in round 2 we will again take best db/lb available. Rounds 3 and 4 may be more of the same.

I'm thinking they take a DB in 1 a QB in 2 and a WR in 3 OL in 3 and LBs and DL they rest of the way. JMHO

So, in keeping Quinn and Wimbley we would be good sooner? If so, then too bad we didn't have both those guys for the last few years. Oh, wait ...

Suspect he has forgotten more than Daboll knows about offense. And he has developed some successful QBs. Not just the skill part, not just the talent part, but also some of the chemistry, which can be crucial on the team with its leader, and also within the organization. It would seem wise to listen to your betters, and I am glad he can spread stuff around. Sound kind of bugged by the process; as for me, not at all upsetting. It is uplifting after suffering since 19freekin'ninety nine, so I don't care who makes us stronger. This is probably as good a fit as we could assemble. Make way for a strong draft and trades.

Hmmm, I'm still not sure I get the idea. If he's going to teach Daboll, who will instruct the QBs, isn't this still him NOT doing the day to day stuff that got him a Favre and a Montana, et al?

That depends on whether you think Montana and Favre were made into the QBs they are by Holmgren or if you believe they had a ton of untapped talent that Holmgren saw and others didn't and he just put them in a good situation to bring that out...
I tend to believe it's the latter. If MH could make filet out of groundbeef then we would have kept Quinn who had all the tools and MH could have just molded him... but MH is looking for a different kind of QB... and I think that is the basis for what we've seen so far, MH knows he doesn't have the right QB on the roster yet and I'm thinking he doesn't even see the right one on the radar in the draft or anywhere else.. so he is biding his time...
