So now we have Watson, Moore, Royal, and Estandia at tight end.

One of those guys won't make the team, right?

I'm happy about Estandia,, As for Ventrone, he was solid on STs...

I vote (with both hands in the air) for Royal not making the team!

I like the signing of Ventrone for special teams depth. But why keep Estandia? We saw what Evan Moore can do and Ben Watson was a good pickup and an upgrade over Royal.

I was hoping we would cut Royal and address this position with one of our 12 picks. I guess Holmgren is willing to stand pat with what we got.

What did Estandia show exactly? I'm a little surprised by this.

Exactly. Someone later in this thread asked why we picked up Estandia, we did because he's cheap, we saw some things last year that we liked, and we want to bring him into camp.

I don't know if Gaines will be coming to camp or if he got cut, so I will keep this about Estandia. Estandia is a very big guy. He's very tall, and while lean for his height, he definitely has some power. He can go out for passes as well as run block (I'm not sure about pass blocking, but I imagine he can do that too). I think he's only like 27, and he is a very large target. He's not a burner and won't get open the way that Moore could either. He doesn't have Moore's hands either, and he did drop some balls this year. But he is willing to run across the middle and attempt to catch difficult passes that are thrown to him. That IMO is his best route, and it's what he's geared best for with his height and long arms.

I'm not sure if Estandia will make it through camp. I wrote a big thing about him and Gaines and decided I liked Estandia more. He definitely plays hard and his size presents a mismatch, but he isn't the most talented or athletic guy. But if he made this team as our third TE, I would not be annoyed at all. Plus, he is young enough that it is possible for him to improve.

As for Ventrone, the guy plays good special teams, and that's one unit that we are very good on. Special teams is underrated, and guys like Ventrone and Constanzo are valuable. On coverage, they are often the difference between 10 yards field position in multiple drives a game. So I imagine Ventrone might have a better shot than Estandia

Big target at 6'8", athletic, strong..seemed to have blocked well enough... and he's young.... and cheap... Probably more upside than downside.. so at this point, it's a good signing.

Whether or not he'll make it out of camp, got me..

Well give me reasons not to then. If you read my long post above this, I have no problem with it at all.

He did drop a few balls in the chances he got last year, but he also made big contributions as well. We do need people in camp, this doesn't mean he makes the 54.

Purp wil prolly kill me, but we need a dedicated back-up that can LS so we can dump Ponty. Someone that can also block and fill-in for Mack if needed

Is Royal getting paid a lot? As a backup I don't mind him. He is a good blocker, and he does get open, he just has bad hands. I mean, I remember a pass in like the fourth quarter that hit him in the helmet. I couldn't believe it.

But I don't think he's as bad as people make him out to be. If he's getting paid like everyone else, what's wrong with Royal as the final TE. I do believe he's better than Estandia. I also think he's probably better than he played last year, he just in no way is a number 1 TE

Fair enough GM, lol. Robert Royal is not worth that kind of money. If we can't afford to pay Cribbs that kind of cash, it looks bad giving that to Robert Royal.

Kind of wish we'd bring Gaines into camp too and then we could them battle it out for that number 3 spot. According to NFL.com Gaines is a UFA also

WHY!
Estandia
Ventrone
CantStandsYa
and Chivarini, I mean Stuckey.

What are 4 reasons I hate Mangin? Alex.

That doesn't even inlclude the ex Jets.

What? Why did he sign these guys... First off, you are saying that mangini signed them.. We have a REALGM and a REAL Pres now.. so he didn't do it without someone watching over his shoulder.. in fact, he probably didn't do it at all,,, but I bet he was asked or at least said he wanted them back..

Secondly,,, it's not even camp yet.. these two guys contributed a little last year.. if they are nothing else, they are camp fodder..

my question is,, WHY would you even bother questioning something so insignificant?

You hate Eric Mangini because of two camp bodies, a great special teams player and a slot receiver?

Two camp bodies a special teamer and a slot receiver.

They all saw too much playing time in my opinion. This is supposed to be the NFL.

So the guys who got the least playing time on the team *other than Stuckey* got too much time?

I just hope this doesn't put Evan Moore's roster spot in jeopardy. I hope the kid gets a full season to show us what he can do.

But like said before, teams have a lot of bodies in camp so having extra tight ends right now doesn't mean we will when the season starts.

one reason that Moore made it to the roster was that he worked his ass off in practice every day. (as Mangini said in his press conference at the time)

That's definitely a "Mangini player".

why do you hate our special teams so much?

costanza and ventrone were # 1 and #3 in special teams tackles....respectively....

there's no valid reason for your angst....
