The main thing students need to do to get through school is pass the test. The higher grades just keep the parents out of the classroom.
I'm assuming you are referring to the state mandated end of year proficiency test.
the 2nd sentence reminds me of overhearing a conversation between a parent and a teacher in a work room. The teacher had to justify a grade of C to the parent.

I am referring to the PSSA (Pennsylvania's Standardized Test)

really? why the heck do I pay all these salaries and high taxes?
Because you have no choice.

They should do away with public schools if the schools cannot prepare my son for life. It is absolutely the school and teachers fault.
Prepare your son for life? So they should teach him to read, write, do math, physical education, they should teach him about sex, careers, manners, behavior, respect? Bullcrap. Public schools are there to have teachers who can teach your child and make the opportunity for a decent education available to those kids who want to take advantage of it. If the kids don't care, it's probably because the parents don't care and if the kids and the parents don't care then it is ABSOLUTELY NOT the teachers fault that those kids fail.

side note*** I do spend time with my son reading and spelling every single night I have him.****
I'm sure you do, which makes it puzzling to me that you are abdicating all responsibility for your childs education to the teachers.

If I pay for a private school is it the private's schools responsibility to teach and educate the child?
No, you are paying for that school to provide a BETTER opportunity to learn than a public school can provide, but it's still up to the parents and the child to seize that opportunity.
If your son gets accepted to Yale but flunks out after his freshman year because he drinks all the time and doesn't do his work, is it Yale's fault that he's not learning?

What about if a contractor that I hire doesn't install my windows properly... should I loook in the mirror or make them fix it?
what about my doctor? if he doesn't install a stint properly should I look in the mirror?
What about the roads the cities provide? do I blame myself because there is a pothole or do i call and say hey... fix this.
Installing a window or a stint or fixing a pot hole is completely different, it doesn't require any participation on your part... let's make a more appropriate analogy..
What if you hire a personal trainer but you only do half the required workouts and when you aren't working out you smoke, eat pizza and drink beer.. is it the personal trainers fault when you are still fat and out of shape 90 days later?

It is very much the teachers responsibilty to make sure every child is educated.
It is very much the teachers responsibility to make sure every child has the opportunity to be educated.
Sad part is the best way to provide a child with that opportunity is to weed out the ones who don't want to learn.. but we can't do that. We put the kids that want to learn right in with a bunch of kids that don't want to learn, the teachers spent 80% of their time trying to motivate and drag along the ones that don't want to learn and the only people that suffer are the kids that actually do want to learn.

I think the teachers are lazy and taking the easy way out and saying... well, it's the parents fault.
I'm pretty sure there are bad teachers out there.. I won't try to defend ALL teachers.. but if your kids is in the 7th grade and can't read (which is where this started), then what kind of parental involvement does that kid have? How in the hell did he/she get that far without the parents throwing a holy fit? Simple, the parents don't care. They aren't involved.... so they blame the teachers.

I teach mentally retarded in high school.
How can you call them retarded? I know I am the PC police but that is just messed up.
I work in the education field and we call kids with disabilities special needs
I disagree with some of your views, some kids may not be smart as others and have lower intelligence but that does not mean they cannot learn. All kids can get a quality education unless they are special needs and physically can’t(special needs).
The teachers should not be blamed, I think its half of the parents fault, they should be responsible by checking their homework, they should be encouraging their child to do their best, they should be meet the teacher every chance they get.

Is "mental retardation" a derogatory term? It's an accurate term to describe the handicap, no? I don't see it as being offensive like "crippled" or "dumb".

Mental retardation is something you can describe... retarded is a slur
Show me one place were they call special needs children retarded? For a teacher to refer to them in that way is just mind boggling

retarded only has a negative connotation due to its popular use as a slur; however, the term retarded is interchangeable as "short hand" for the full phrase of mental retardation. The negative connotation only exists because of the use of the very valid term in a negative manner. So, yes, I agree - you ARE the PC Police

I'm surprised I found as many as I did. I don't have a pony in this race, I looked out of curiosity....as we still use the MR term in the hospital I work at.

I work in the education field so it’s hard for me to understand how teacher can call his own children "retarded". My question if you had a child or family member who was special needs would you call them that? I think most people wouldn't .
I am pretty sure if his principle or superintendent knew he called them that he would get in trouble…

From my understanding in the 50s-70s it was socially acceptable to use those terms. Now it’s slur and kind of taboo. In most places and most places and standards it is abolished because of the negative thinking.
I would agree I am way to sensitive on this topic, I just have a soft spot for the special needs children, because they can't help it.
I also think that teachers who do teach special needs are super heroes.
