Parts of the Miami Valley are supposed to get up to a foot of snow beginning tonight and lasting through Wednesday morning. Where we live, which is further South, we might get half snow, half ice, but the Northern areas are due to be hit BIG with all snow. The weather guys are actually suggesting you go to the grocery store to stock up for this one....and that has happened maybe twice in the last 10 years, or so. (We got 19" two years ago at Christmas.) I just hope it's sleet and not freezing rain as sleet doesn't stick to power lines. If the power goes out, we're screwed because we won't be able to drive due to the roads. Everyone in Dayton -- stay safe and warm.

You know, I've thought about buying one....but haven't. I could at least power a couple space heaters. I might seriously consider one for the future.

As soon as the old lady gets home, I think we'll go do Valentine's Day dinner tonite, then get to the Depot for a generator. It looks like it's going to be a tough couple of days.

Now I'm wondering if I should go get one, too. I just have no idea what I should be looking for in a generator.
Where are you, OoooRah?

Yeah, the upside is that you have power when you need it the most, unless you've used the 5 gallons of gasoline to run it!
Dad lives 25 miles SW of Charelston WV, and they got hammered last week and their power was out for a short time. Fortunately, he has a nice Honda generator he bought a while back. It's a 13 HP and holds 6 1/2 gallons of gasoline. He keeps 3-5 gallon cans full in the shed for standby. He rotates the gasoline by using it in his riding mower. If he runs it at or less than half load, he gets about 10 hours out of a tankful. Enough to run the heat pump, tv and fridge.
I could see if the power would be out a lot longer, then he would have to traverse the mountains to the nearest gas station (over 8 miles away) to keep replenishing the fuel. Fortunately, the coal mine is at the end of his road, and if the power goes out, power and light is pretty responsive on getting the juice turned back on.

I don't really understand how they work...how do you pick and choose what to power?

I'm in Delaware,...they're calling for anywhere from 5-12 around here, so there's no telling. One of those times you hope work DOESN'T get cancelled due to weather.
What's got me anxious is your comment about ice and power lines. That's when you've got to be prepared.

You would choose one according to what you would run if & when your power went off. If you unplug everything except your heater blower, then you could probably get away with a 5 hp unit. If you run more things you would want more hp.
The more HP, the more AC output the generator puts out. On dad's generator, it puts out 5500w and maxes out at 6500W. That is for the 13 hp unit.
I would guess the 5 hp unit would put out 1250-1500W, thus you would not be able to run as many things on it as you would a unit with more watt output.

Columbus is getting dumped on too. Hopefully they'll close OSU. They haven't done that since 2002 and that was the only time in 20 years. Columbus through Dayton are getting hammered. Better than that, the temperature is supposed to get really cold again too. .WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM TUESDAY TO 7 AM EST WEDNESDAY... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN WILMINGTON HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM TUESDAY TO 7 AM EST WEDNESDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT. SNOW WILL DEVELOP LATE TONIGHT WITH ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES POSSIBLE BY DAYBREAK TUESDAY. THE SNOW WILL CONTINUE ON TUESDAY AND TAPER OFF TUESDAY NIGHT. WARMER AIR WILL BE DRAWN NORTH THROUGH THE SCIOTO VALLEY...AND COULD CAUSE SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN TO MIX WITH THE SNOW. ADDITIONAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE DURING THE DAY TUESDAY...ALONG WITH SOME ICE ACCUMULATION. ADDITIONAL LIGHT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF AN INCH OR TWO MAY OCCUR TUESDAY EVENING AS THE PRECIPITATION GRADUALLY TAPERS OFF. AT THIS TIME...SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 6 TO 10 INCHES IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR OVER THE AREA. SOME SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WILL ALSO OCCUR WHICH WILL CUT THE HIGHER SNOWFALL TOTALS BUT ADD SOME ICE ACCUMULATIONS OF UNDER AN INCH. LISTEN TO NOAA ALL HAZARDS WEATHER RADIO OR OTHER MEDIA FOR LATER UPDATES ON THIS SITUATION. REMEMBER...A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE IMMINENT OR HIGHLY LIKELY. Thanks, Gordy. I still don't get it, though....where do I hook the generator up to? The fuse box? That could be a problem as well....I've got the old screw in fuse box.

DM The problem is not necessarily what to power but how to properly vent the generator so as to eliminate the Carbon Monoxide emissions.Be sure to vent it outside thru the garage or laundry room dryer vent area. Electric lights/lamps,radio,small refrigerators or small heaters are good to cover. Just the absolute essential power consuming appliances.

I think that would keep the heater blower and the fridge going. Beer has to be cold,.... And don't no smarty pants come back and say "just put it outside where it's cold." Opening the door lets out the heat,....

So, the generator goes INSIDE the house?? That doesn't seem right...and I can't do that because of the birds. Not to mention the noise these things put out.

They closed OSU in the early/mid-90's due to sub-zero temps. I was a student at the time. I remember it well. Just can't remember exactly when it happened. They say memory is the first thing to go. LOL!

You need a "box" wired into you circuit panel. It's not really a do it yourself thing though. But the generator itself has outlets, you can use extension cords in a pinch.

this...
If connecting a generator into your home electrical system, have a qualified electrician install a Power Transfer System.

Guess I was off on 2002 being the only time in 20 years. That's what someone told me I'm really hoping for a school closing Wednesday. It's probably the last chance I'll ever have since I graduate in March. It's been since I was a junior in high school since I had a snow day. I would really like to act like an idiot and snow gives me a perfectly good excuse.

Yeah, most models do have outlets on the generator itself as stated by shadow67. If you do use cords, you wouldn't want to overload them, for it would cause a fire just as an overloaded circuit in your home would be dangerous. All of the recommendations I've seen is to run the generator in an outside area, under a canopy or have it under a covered structure that is open to air and never run it in your house.

That's what I would have to do, too....don't have the converter built in. Hmmm....I could also put it under the back porch...metal roof, cement floor. But then I would have to crack a window to get the extension cords through.

If this is happening soon.....get exterior extension cords rounded up. Put the generator outside but close to the garage or some entrance to the home where you can run the extension cords from the generator outside back inside to the selected appliances. Do not allow the generator inside the home...I hope I did not mislead you. Be careful and best of luck.

I'm giving 3 to 1 odds that my car doesn't start when I go to run it on Friday. I actually dread scraping the snow off my car. For some reason, the windshield wipers on my car always freeze after a snow storm and don't work for hours of driving.
Even if they don't cancel class I doubt more than a third of the students show up on Wednesday so I'll just take a personal snow day. There are all sorts of personal days you can take in college: day after beer days, day of beer days, sleep days, so why not an unofficial snow day?

Weather dude just said we probably won't get enough ice for power outages so I'm going to gamble on this one. I don't want to run around buying a generator, gather gasoline, and learning how to use it when I need it.

I'm giving 3-1 odds we don't get what they are calling for.......they always make a big deal out of this kind of thing. But, I have my generator (will fire it up soon, just to make sure), the freezers are full of hamburger, ham, deer, and Lord knows what else......we have a little bit of milk, and we have 4 snowmobiles and a hummer. I'm not worried.......plus, we'll probably only get 2 or 3 inches and the weathermen will say "it just missed us....."

Be safe gal....and stock up. You should always have enough food to hack out a week over wood or a propane camp stove..keep 3-4 extra bottles on hand...and keep a few bags of tea candles on hand...each burns 4-5 hours...a bag of 100 costs maybe $6...enough to keep you in light for 6-7 days. A few half gallons of Jack never hurt anything. Oh....right now it shows 65 degrees.....but it is supposed to start getting colder again later in the week.

I had the privilege of spending the week-end at my brother's place in Grand Island, NY (Buffalo) last October when the heavy snow hit and everyone in his hood had a generators but, only his was working. Grand Island is 2 - 3 ft below sea-level so, they need to keep those sump pumps going in certain areas of the island. Boy, was I glad we had one that week-end. Trouble is, a lot of people don't keep their generators in shape for when they are needed.....like my brother's neighbours. You need the put a stablizer in for the gas and run them every so often. But they are great, I hear the Hondas seem to perform the best and the smaller ones regardless of brand, make a lot of noise.
Good luck to you guys in Ohio, I suppose we will probably get some of the effect in Niagara area soon after.

Thanks, Stabber. I know people that do a lot of boondocking while camping love the little generators with Honda engines. I hear they are some of the quietest.

I bought my generator at a garage sale, my neighbors. He bought it new, and could never get it to run....he never needed it, so he sold it.
I paid him $50 bucks for a $600 generator, brought it home, pulled the carb off to see if it was dirty..........clean as new.
As I was putting that back on, I noticed a fuel shut off on the bottom of the tank. The dolt never turned the fuel on!!!! I cranked it open, pulled and boom - it was running.
I have it running right now, just to get it ready if we indeed do get snow and the power goes out.......
