I will say right now that Holmgren and company have not impressed me at all.
Which might be the best news I've heard in an already ecstatic off-season for me!

You know sometimes you remind me of a veggie burger. If you take a bite of of it,it may taste good but when you get a real beef burger it reminds you that the real thing is much better!
Just wait till next season, I have heard that for over 40 years!

I think Dawgtalkers needs to open a restaurant.
Too much food, so little...well, food.
In either case, Holmgren and co have done exactly what I thought they would have. It's not like we were the #1 destination for the 3 big name FA's. The only move of their's that I hate is Delhomme.
you had a good run Hank.

Yes, but yesterdays news may be the thing that makes or breaks the future for our Browns.
What happened yesterday that makes or breaks the Browns future? What did I miss?

Then the next post by Corpus.
You brought up the yesterdays news line, referencing the past, Corpus replied in kind. There was no actual new news yesterday.

I agree we haven't done anything "earth shattering" but the fact that we've gotten rid of mediocre or under producing players and replaced them with ANYBODY is still reason to be optomistic IMO. It's early, the scenery will continue to change before the season starts.

I wonder how much of the "Non" earth shattering moves were because of the uncertainty over a new CBA?

I think that's what is being overlooked by most upset with the FA period. There were not that many big names in FA this year. And the ones that were there were overpriced. No CBA meant that players that would have been available usually weren't available. That is why so many teams tendered so many players with the second round tender. That wasn't exclusive to the Browns.
I also would love to hear from these same posters, who exactly were the big name FAs that we should have signed. Mnay of the top FAs were head cases and past there prime players looking for a big payday or a team with SB capability.
I can't even read most of the dribble about how bad the FAs we got are. Most of these same posters were guys that swore we shouldn't pick up guys in previous years because they were sure they were done and a waste. John Lynch always comes to mind. We could have signed him to replace Earl Litte I believe, but many here poo poo his abilities, calling him old and done. He went to two Pro Bowls after that playing for Denver. Many bashed Ricky Williams, but he has since been a big contributor in Miami, and IMO better than any back we've had, that includes that Raven we had for a couple years.
So I will wait until a guy like Fujita proves that he is a good player, which I think he did in the SuperBowl. And I will wait to see if Pashos improved his agility, which has been reported to be the case. And I will trust Homgren's assessment of Jake over these same "experts".
If that makes me a homer, themn sign me up. But IMO, it is more about being open minded, not blindly optomistic, as some make it sound if you like any of the moves.

I'll own up on Brian Dawkins. I thought for sure he was old and injury-prone and not worth the money last year. But, he looked good for Denver last year and really solidified their pass defense.
and I really, really hope I get to own up on Jake Delhomme next offseason. I have not been a fan of his and the past couple years have been ugly. But, obviously, I hope I am wrong and Holmgren (again obviously) knows a heck of a lot more about QBs than all posters on this board combined. IMO.

this Don Banks article seems to go with your points as well. the steeler bullets I left in there because well it's still fun to see them squirm. Quote:
• Worst offseason, franchise -- I'm guessing that last year's ambassadorship appointment to Ireland is looking pretty good these days to Steelers owner Dan Rooney. All he really missed is last season's non-playoff 9-7 finish and the trainwreck that has been Pittsburgh's 2010 so far. The last Rooney knew, Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes were just playing pitch and catch in Tampa, and then the big confetti shower commenced. But there have been a few unfortunate developments since.
• Worst offseason, player -- Sure, Terrell Owens can't find a city or a team to call his fifth NFL home, but that's not as bad as Roethlisberger has it. Big Ben was in position to own Pittsburgh, and he's in the process of revoking all territorial rights. It's enough to make you pine for those hazy, lazy days of 2006, when the riskiest thing he did was ride around helmet-less on his motorcycle.
Anquan Boldin went to the Ravens for third- and fourth-round picks in the 2010 draft. Sam Greenwood/Getty Images • Trend of the offseason -- Trading veteran players for draft picks has been all the rage in this salary cap-less year. Trades once were tricky in the NFL due to the acceleration of cap charges that resulted, but not anymore. Antonio Cromartie, Anquan Boldin, Brady Quinn, Charlie Whitehurst, Kamerion Wimbley, Seneca Wallace, Kerry Rhodes, Shaun Hill, Corey Williams, Chris Clemons, Darryl Tapp, Chris Houston and others were moved in March in deals involving draft picks. Who knows? Maybe we'll even see a few moves made at the October trading deadline this year.
• Non-trend of the offseason -- With more than 200 potential unrestricted free agents being forced into restricted free agency due to rules in place for the uncapped year, the RFA market was expected to be busier than usual. But that has not been the case. At least yet. Brandon Marshall is still a Bronco. Vincent Jackson remains a Charger. Anthony Hargrove hasn't left the Saints. Unless you count running back Mike Bell jumping from New Orleans to Philadelphia as big news, nothing much has happened
.............
• Team that doesn't recognize itself from 2009 -- Nobody does upheaval better than the Cleveland Browns, but they might just be getting it right this time. Brady Quinn? Gone. Derek Anderson? Gone. Kamerion Wimbley, Jamal Lewis and Corey Williams? Gone, gone, gone. I like most of what new Browns football czar Mike Holmgren and general manager Tom Heckert have done, with the glaring exception of giving $7 million to a quarterback (Jake Delhomme) whose new nickname should be T.O., as in turnover.
..................
• No. 2 and willing to move -- Backup quarterbacks in the NFL aren't usually second-teamers for long. At some point, almost every one has to step in and play for a game or two. That's why the market for their services always stays strong, as it did this month. As the 2010 season looms, Seneca Wallace has relocated to Cleveland, David Carr to San Francisco, Anderson to Arizona, Quinn to Denver, Whitehurst to Seattle, Rex Grossman to Washington, and A.J. Feeley to St. Louis. Which ones will wind up playing pivotal roles for their teams this season?

The moves of Holmgren have been aggressive, well, surgical, no, methodical, lame? All of the above so far. Replacing St. Clair to the bench by signing Pashos was surgical as a needed Tumor was removed, ditto the signing of the TE who will send the horrid Buffalo reject back to the Pines, that was surgically aggressive. Dumping DA was a surgery also needed, while the addition of Wallace was a methodical trade for a low pick under the radar ok...Signing Fujita could send Barton packing and that would be a plus as he is as slow as dirt. Gokong for backup and a 5th was methodical. cutting away the CONTRACT of Wimbley( an average talent paid like a top selection) was probably a salary move, how we convert the pick determines it's value. Getting the CB Brown was aggressive and a very solid move as he can mentor the young DBs on the roster and make BMAC a nickle CB. My ONLY real negative was Quinn for a ham sandwich trade, where Denver stole us BLIND. I think that was an over my dead body trade wanted/ demanded by Mangini. While all the other moves had real value and had a context with each other the quinn give away still baffles me. It does not fit with the other Moves mad by team Prez, Mike Holmgren
But by far the best Move will be that the "braintrust of Mangini /Kokinis" is OVER and Eric may have a red phone in the draft room but the cord will be disconnected.
