"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

beat me to the punch, just logged on espn to download podcasts for tomorrow and saw that. I'm shocked to say the least. I know they lost 4 or 5 good assistants, but why blow up your coach now when there are no good candidates? I wonder who will take over, Rivera? Ferentz?

Talk about dropping the ball. The hot coaches are off the market by now and finally they make the announcement. This probably won't be pretty.

Yeah, I'm in disbelief as well. I've always liked Marty, though I cant say I remember him coaching here. He always seemed like a standup guy. He should recharge for a year and come here.

i agree, but i gotta think they waited until dallas made a move so that dalls couldn't get him. looks like he is gonna have to be an assistant somewhere until atleast next year.

Where will Marty go? Will he want to be a coordinator? Do other teams dump their coaches now to be able to pick up Marty? Will he retire? This throws my mind for a whirl.
Wow the Giants let a couple big names go and Marty gets canned. Big day for news.

Yes. Reports were, they weren't even talking anymore. So something had to give. Either the GM,or Marty. Well, now we know which way the ax swung on that one.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

so now most of the good coaches (and even some of the crappy ones we got) are taken. who is going to fill the empty spaces?
they could of gotten grimm or some of the other good coaches if they did this earlier.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

They can still get Grimm if they want. Also Rivera is a possibility as is Norv Turner - just off the top of my head.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2763552ources close to Marty Schottenheimer and the San Diego Chargers said the coach was fired by the team Monday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported. Schottenheimer and Chargers general manager A.J. Smith have been having disagreements over staffing after losing a number of assistants. Dean Spanos, the team president, told Schottenheimer on Monday that it wasn't going to work between him and Smith. Three days after the Chargers melted down in a stunning 24-21 playoff loss to New England, Spanos decided that bringing Schottenheimer back for the final year of his contract gave San Diego its best chance to win. Schottenheimer, though, declined the team's offer of a one-year extension for 2008 worth $4.5 million, with a $1 million buyout. "Right now, I wasn't comfortable accepting it," Schottenheimer told the Associated Press shortly after the season. He would have earned more than $3 million in 2007. With a regular-season record of 200-126-1 with Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego, Schottenheimer is the most successful coach never to have reached the Super Bowl.

j/c most of the chargers board is up in arms. Names that have been uttered are, Cowher, Parcells, Chow, Turner. They are also mad that this has happened now and not a month ago. They think they are all screwed and I dont blame them.

The owner talks about dysfunction and forgets that things have been so bad in San Diego that even Manning didn't want to be there.
I can't believe this. I feel awful for Marty but the owner has made his bed and now has to sleep in it!
I think there are some solid coaches out there - Rivera, Grimm.
My question is this...don't you think they would have lined up someone? Maybe Parcells? Or was it just as simple as they said.
Wow!
I'd venture to say that Marty and Cowher will be available next year if we are in the market for a coach...hmmmmmm Romeo better get those boys playing better!!!!

Oh I understand that, I just thought I would post at who they are thinking and how those guys really arent available. They are probably going to have to go with Norv Turner but even then who do they get for coordinators? I dont think this was very well planned out.

Thier GM,,, Smith is an idiot,, marty is a pretty darn good coach and Yes, I know the rep is that he can't even get to the big one,,, but there are two things to think about..
1. He doesn't play,,,, the players play and everytime, in Cleveland, KC and in SD,his players let him down...(yea,,, I know,,the prevent d,,,He didn't do that this time and still, he lost)
and
2. Smith is leading that team into a deep dark hole,,,, they lost Cam Cameron to Miami, Wade Phillips to dallas, Chud to us and a couple of others,,, and now he fires his HC... what a fool,,, JMO however..
Man, if I were a HC candidate, I'd be chomping at the bit to get that job even if smith is there,,, that is one heck of a talented team and you would have to be a complete fool not to have a winning record with those players...yikes
GOOD NEWS,,, maybe it will make it easier for us to snag Dielman in FA...LOL gotta find the bright side...

Weird timing, to say the least. I always liked Marty.

I agree...They wont be anywhere near the team they were this year. Tomlinson can probably get them to .500 maybe 10-6 at the best. All I know is we havent been consistently decent since Modell got rid of Marty. Smith hasnt had a winner without Marty. I'm interested to see where the Chargers end up.

Wow,,, I suppose that's good for him, but I hope he passes... He could end up being out HC in a year or two or three.. He's a young bright football mind that I'd like to see develop as a Brown...

One thing I think you are ignoring and I was ignoring in emotion of this news is that it is VERY hard to get a d-cord and an o-cord for a lame duck coach (he was only signed through next year). I think the FO realized that they either HAD to fire him to get good assistants in there or extend his contract.
That is probably more of the issue than anything.

Smith is a lot of things... idiot is not one of them
He has demonstrated numerous times that he is smarter than the average bear. The Charger are in the postion that they are because of Smiths drafts.
Smith took over for John Butler in 2004.
2004 put 6 player on the field Rivers, Olshansky, Kaeting, Hardwick, Phillips Turner and Olivea.
2005 put Merriman and Castillo.
2006 Cromartie and McNiell.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

This appears to be a fairly straightforward, honest message to the fans of the Chargers. No punches pulled.
Although a bizarre situation, that's kind of unique.

Well just in case the Romeo and Savage boat sinks next year we could be in a prime position to get several prominent coaches Parcells, Marty, Cowher, Fisher ( The guy i want)... It could be a good year for Crennell to lay a stink like last year.... Always looking on the bright side

Man, I don't think I can take many more losing seasons.
I hope Crennel rights the ship this year, we have a winning record, and we don't even need to look at the other guys.
HOWEVER, if not, I want Cowher.
