i constantly catch flak from my "pure" baseball fan friends, but I say leave it the way it is.
i enjoy that a professional hitter can be employed in MLB. why does baseball NEED to have all players play defense? the NFL has separate defenders. the NBA has offensive specialists who don't play defense (whoops).
anyway, back on point, it would be a shame if guys like Hafner and also the older veterans who can still hit (Dave Winfield anyone) did not have a place in the game.
at the same time, I love that there is a league where pitchers who are good at hitting gain a signficant advantage by their ability to hit and pitch. and I love having the chess game in the WS based on this difference.
baseball has enough things broken to bother messing with something that works.

Ruins the sport, eliminates strategy, if you pitch, you should take your swings at the plate.

if you play quarterback, then you should have to take your turns tackling runningbacks.
it's all about the accepted norm.

Quarterbacks never tackled running backs, Pitchers always hit before this incredibly stupid DH rule.

Maybe we can have a designated free thrower in basketball for guys like Shaq.

Also, there'd be a lot less head-hunting by pitchers if they knew they were going to have to stand in the batter's box vs a guy throwing in the 90's. Pitching inside is part of the game, but retaliating by throwing at the hitter is cowardly for an AL pitcher, under the DH rule.

And those were the 2 highest profile QBs of their day. Most players played multiple positions in the early NFL until it became "accepted" for a QB to be a specialist.

To use your analogy, that's like saying only QBs in the NFC have to play defense, but QBs in the AFC can only play QB.
It doesn't make any sense to have two separate "rules" in the MLB based on which conference(call it league whatever, it's still a conference) you play in.

if that was the case, I would guarantee you that Tim Tebow would be drafted by a NFC team though, right?
like I said, it's all about accepted norms. MLB has different rules, which is different than other sports, so people argue it. the BCS is different than other sports championships, so people argue it.
I am also not complaining about that. I enjoy the arguments and that we have things that are outside the accepted norms. Otherwise, it would be awfully boring.

Tebow would play for all 32 NFL team simultaneously. Quote:

True, but the Big 12 football doesn't have different rules compared to Big 10 football or SEC football. That's the point I'm trying to get across.
Obviously I love baseball or I wouldn't be posting in this thread, but two different rules for the same league is just weird and silly IMO. Just one guy's humble opinion.

i agree it's strange. but, that's sort of why I like it. it's completely unique and different to any other sport in that way.
also, now you have me on a tangent thinking about it. other current NFL QB's who might be able to play defense if they absolutely had to for their team (yeah, it'd be a complete weak link, but best guys for it IMO):
the DB division:
Seneca Wallace Michael Vick Pat White Alex Smith
the LB division:
Brady Quinn Roethlisburger Culpepper (in his younger days at least) Jason Campbell
the DL division:
JaMarcus Russell (have you seen his gut?)
thought about Vince Young, but he's too tall and lanky for LB, maybe could work as a FS?
Josh Cribbs obviously would be a NFL QB somewhere if this were to happen. And the Wildcat would be more than a gimmick offense

I've always enjoyed the strategic part of the game that comes from the pitcher batting. Deciding if he is going to lay down a bunt to move a runner into scoring position. Do you pinch hit for your pitcher or let him bat in a close game. Not to mention the double switch.
It always seemed to me that using the DH was dumbed down baseball. I know there are people on the other side of the argument that think pitchers can't hit so they don't even want to see them try but that to me is one of the reasons I enjoy the NL much more than the AL.

The DH is MLB's version of the NFL's 5-yd chuck rule, and the NBA's 3-point line ... rule changes that enhance offense and scoring. Big time sports decided some time ago that they could only survive with their hardcore fans who loved the games for their "purity", but that they could get freaking rich if they could lure the casual fans into the seats. Casual fans want scoring. Still waiting for the NHL to eliminate the Blue Line ...
Like everything else, its all about the Benjamins.

Ive always wanted Roger Clemens to take the plate the way he always threw at people. Everyone bragged about his command but when he threw inside, he said it got away from him. Its easy to throw at batters and brush them back when you never have to see the plate.

This.
Just because they suck at it doesn't mean they should not have to hit! Man up and take some swings at the plate, ya Sallies. I also like how much more strategic the NL game tends to be. The AL is more like mindless pituitary roided-out tools just trying to pound out three run shots.
Politicians are puppets, y'all. Let's get Geppetto!

I think a good compromise would be to bat 10.
Pitchers hit,...
DH'ers get their longer careers,....
Still get the NL "strategy" decisions,....
World Series problem solved.
Do it.

That's the thing, I'll bet at some point, most pitchers were pretty good hitters.. back in high school and college these kids were probably really good athletes who hit 3, 4, or 5 in the line up... then the rules took the bat out of their hands and they stopped practicing their hitting, just because they were pitchers... I don't get it.
