I have a question.. why do we expect athletes to act better than their overall demographic? Is it because they have a lot of money? or because we think they should take their "role model" status more seriously?
I don't know how many athletes there are across the major sports but my guess is that if you take the cross sectional demographic of highly paid athletes.... twentys, single, etc.. and compared them to the general population of that demographic, I'm betting that the athletes are probably BETTER than the population...

Douchebags are just that, douchebags. Rich, poor, tall, short, famous, nobody, athlete, geek, big city, hicksville, smart, and dumb. It can cross any demographic. I like how people are so shocked to see a pro athlete act like this.

I'm just thinking out loud here but I'm guessing that if you somehow removed pro sports tomorrow from our culture, an even greater portion of athletes would be in jail than are in trouble now... just a guess.

that's true. But I would never support a douche like ben. Even if I were a steelers fan, I would have a hard time rooting for the guy. you wouldn't see me with his jersey on waiting around to get his autograph. A normal guy in the public that acts like this, you have nothing to do with.

That will never happen. There is no precedent for suspending a player for a season over an unproven accusation. (no matter how inflammatory)
I just wish that these women would go through with the criminal cases instead of backing out. Let the law decide whether or not he is guilty. (and I bet that the DA would have taken the case if the victim would not have backed out at the last minute)

You think she had a case?? I can't stand roth, but all reports say the girl was wasted, even to the point where she couldn't remember all the details. A great attorney would've destroyed her credibility.
I don't see the point of going through an agonizing trial, when you know you're going to lose.

Lose the trial? Probably.
We're not talking trial here - we're talking about what happened - and ALL reports say there was some sort of sexual contact. In this case. Oh, and in the other case.

The DA absolutely lambasted Roethlisberger in his statement. I think that the DA absolutelty believed that Roethlisberger was guilty as sin, but he also knew that he had no case without the girl.
No means No, no matter how drunk or wasted the girl is. If she said no, and he did it anyway, that's a rape, pure and simple.
Could there be reasonable doubt? Perhaps. Could this case have ben proven? Other cases have been proven with intoxicated victims. Circumstancially, it would be a tough case for Roethlisberger's lawyer to defend against. It might have come down to a "he said/she said" ..... and while she might have questionable credibility due to alcohol .... he certainly has little or no credibilty at this point even stone cold sober.

For all that didn't believe that he is a jerk, this should open your eyes.
IMO the taped over surviellence tape saved his butt and the club owners too, The barmaid admitted to serving drinks to a minor, yet no charges against the barmaid, club owner, or Ben...........money bought this guy a non charge. To believe anything else is foolish.
I hope he tries it again somewhere where gis money won't buy him out of it.
When he hits the field this year I hope he is booed at every stradium he appears at.............Ben is a scumbag

Not to defend Ben or anything as he seems to be a worthless piece of crap and should be behind bars, but have any of you guys actually encountered what my generation knows as a 20 year old "club girl" when they're sober, let alone after they've had a few drinks? I think if you have you probably wouldn't be as staunchly in this girl's corner as you are right now. I don't feel sorry for either of them because they both made horrible decisions.

It depends.
You're automatically assuming every 20 year old girl who goes to a college bar is a whore. Being not even a year removed from college, I can tell you that's not the case.
I know many sorority girls who you may automatically assume is a "club girl" and I guarantee you you're wrong.

Well, I'm not 20 and even when I was, I don't remember the term, "club girl". What we called them were drunks or Easy..
If that's what you are refering to, then yeah, not exactly a suprise that she found herself in that position.
Still, Ben is 28 years old and frankly, that's old enough to know better.
it's one thing for the girl to be a drunk and easy or a "club girl" as you put it, but it's another thing for a supposedly mature man to do what he's accused of.
Either way, no matter what, I've always been taught that no means no..
in other words, Ben used lousy judgement...

"Raped" sounds so harsh....In today's PC world, shouldn't it be "a non-consensual overly intimate encounter" ?

I went to find a quote I saw on ESPN where the accuser supposedly said she had sex with Ben. I figured I better have proof of the statement before I chastised all of you. Instead I found this.. Roethlisberger's accuser says she told him 'no' AP
Ben Roethlisberger AP – FILE - This Nov. 29, 2009, file photo shows Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the … By KATE BRUMBACK, Associated Press Writer Kate Brumback, Associated Press Writer – 42 mins ago
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The 20-year-old college student who accused Ben Roethlisberger of sexual assault told police she tried to get away from the Pittsburgh Steelers star, but he cornered her in a nightclub bathroom.
The woman's statements to police were included in hundreds of pages of police documents released Thursday. Earlier this week, prosecutors said no charges would be filed against Roethlisberger, who has denied the college student's accusations through his attorney.
The student told police Roethlisberger assaulted her in the bathroom of a bar in the college town of Milledgeville early on the morning of March 5. They had met earlier in the night as they bar-hopped, she with her sorority sisters and he with an entourage.
On Friday, Milledgeville Police Chief Woodrow Blue confirmed that Sgt. Jerry Blash, the officer who took the first report from Roethlisberger's accuser, resigned from the force Wednesday, a day before the Georgia Bureau of Investigation released the case documents.
The documents show Blash acknowledged to investigators that he made derogatory statements about Roethlisberger's accuser to other officers and that some in Roethlisberger's party may have overheard him. He was the only officer to interview Roethlisberger, with whom he had posed for pictures earlier in the night. Calls to a number listed for him rang unanswered Thursday evening and Friday.
The documents also show that after the college student's accusations surfaced, a 16-year-old in a youth law enforcement program run by the Milledgeville police told authorities he had been told about incidents involving Roethlisberger and a friend's sister. The 16-year-old told police the woman's brother told him that Roethlisberger twice made unwanted sexual advances.
Authorities repeatedly tried to interview the woman, who is in her early 20s, but she declined. A message seeking comment was left Friday with Roethlisberger's lawyer, Ed Garland.
The documents released Thursday for the first time detail the events through the eyes of Roethlisberger's accuser.
In a statement to police on March 5, the young woman said Roethlisberger encouraged her and her friends to do numerous shots. Then one of his bodyguards escorted her into a hallway at the Capital City nightclub, sat her on a stool and left. She said Roethlisberger walked down the hallway and exposed himself.
"I told him it wasn't OK, no, we don't need to do this and I proceeded to get up and try to leave," she said, according to the police documents. "I went to the first door I saw, which happened to be a bathroom."
According to her statement, Roethlisberger then followed her into the bathroom and shut the door.
"I still said no, this is not OK, and he then had sex with me," she wrote. "He said it was OK. He then left without saying anything."
Two of her friends said they saw a bodyguard lead her into the hallway and then saw Roethlisberger follow. They said they couldn't see their friend but knew she was drunk and were worried about her.
Ann Marie Lubatti told police she approached one of Roethlisberger's two bodyguards and said, "This isn't right. My friend is back there with Ben. She needs to come back right now."
She said the bodyguard wouldn't look her in the eye and said he didn't know what she was talking about. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified that bodyguard as Ed Joyner, a Pennsylvania trooper, and the man who led Roethlisberger's accuser down the hallway as Anthony Barravecchio, an officer on the force in the Pittsburgh suburb of Coraopolis.
Attorney Michael Santicola, who represents Barravecchio but said Joyner also is a longtime friend, confirmed March 10 that the two officers were present, but not in an official capacity. He said the two men are friends with Roethlisberger and did not witness any criminal activity or inappropriate behavior. He said the officers "have no memory" of meeting his accuser.
Lt. Myra A. Taylor, a spokeswoman for Pennsylvania State Police, said Thursday night the agency is getting a copy of the investigative report from Georgia authorities and will review it.
Roethlisberger also is being sued in civil court by a former Nevada hotel employee for an alleged sexual assault in 2008. No criminal charges were filed in that case.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is reviewing the Georgia case and Steelers president Art Rooney II said Thursday that the league and team probably won't settle on any punishment until after next week's draft.
Rooney said the team is prepared to discipline Roethlisberger now, but will wait for the league's decision. Roethlisberger told him that he will accept the punishment, Rooney said.
Prompted partly by the Roethlisberger incident, Goodell sent a memo last week to NFL owners, executives and head coaches emphasizing the importance of the league's personal conduct policy. According to the memo, first reported by the New York Times, the absence of criminal charges is not enough to excuse poor behavior.
"The policy makes clear that NFL and club personnel must do more than simply avoid criminal behavior," the memo said. "We must conduct ourselves in a way that is responsible, that promotes the values upon which the league is based, and is lawful."
The Roethlisberger case has infuriated the Steelers.
"I have made it clear to Ben that his conduct in this incident did not live up to our standards," Rooney said. "We have made it very clear to Ben that there will be consequence for his actions, and Ben has indicated to us he is willing to accept those consequences."

A local cop has to resign, Ben's bodyguard is a cop. I think there is going to be a lot of collateral damage when it is all said and done.

OR maybe Ben fits the criteria to be the perfect 3-4 Defensive End
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Those quotes that you keep reading were from the released please report. So they had told the prosecutor, however the prosecutor did not see any way to get a conviction.

Yes, but I think that came from the initial reports. A third woman has claimed br forced his hand up her skirt at a party, but her father talked her out of pressing charges. Another interesting tidbit is that the cop the girl in Georgia gave the report to looked at others and said, "this b_tch is drunk". He's the same one that had his pic taken with br earlier in the evening. He resigned the other day.
They said something about the Steelers being fined, but I didn't catch the details.

ESPN talked about it a moment ago,, something about not only the player could be fined if there is an incident, but now the team can as well. They mentioned the Steelers could be fined up to 200k for Rothlesberger and Holmes incidents.. WOW,,,
I take it the league is saying,, Look Teams,, if you allow these kinds of players on your team, then you will pay also... WOW

I have no problem with that rule. I'd like to see the league cleaned up quite honestly. I've like all of what I've seen from Goodell with the exception of the new draft scheduling.

don't take what I said as gospel on this Saint.. it was something I overheard as I was doing other things.., so I may not have it exactly right..
But for the moment, let's say I have it right.. I don't have a problem with it either. it means that guys that don't follow the rules won't get drafted as high or if they do it will be with some stiff stipulations,, you break the rule, you pay your fine and the teams and you get suspended..
Not sure that's something they could or would do, but I think it would clean up things a bit

Honestly, I don't think the team should get fined for a first time offender.
I know with Ben, we're not talking about a first time offender.
But, if someone who hasn't had any problems before, gets in touble, regardless of how big it is, I don't think you can fine the team for that.
Teams should only get fined if it's someone who has been in trouble before.

Myself, I don't think the teams - even the steelers - should be fined. They can't keep a 24 hour watch on the players, 365 days a year.
The players are supposed to be adults.
I can see fining the players more - but not the teams.
