What a strange weekend it has been for Santonio Holmes.

Yesterday, we reported that Holmes is facing a four-game suspension under the substance abuse policy. Tonight, we're told that the Steelers have traded Holmes to the New York Jets.

More to come.

Pro Football Weekly

Another benefit of living on the West Coast. I get breaking news while East Coasters are sleeping.

Glad to seem him out of the division.

And also glad to see that all the Steelers got in return is....a 5th round pick. The 151st in the draft.

Our main rival just got worse.

he's just a scapegoat if you ask me. If they want to make a statement, trade Big Ben. He's been in just as much trouble as santonio.

I'll be very interested in what they get for Holmes.

See, we have a guy most likely facing a suspension as well that people have suggested trading in Rogers. If the Stoolers got more than a 5th for him I'd be shocked.

Under such conditions, I highly doubt you get much in return and basicly can't get much more than a ham.........ah.....burger. Yeah, that's the ticket!

5th rounder. This is such a steal for the Jets. They are loaded on offense.

that what John CLayton said. A 5th rd pick is what the steelers got. Holmes has to be a grade a idiot to be screwing up with the drugs as he has.

Only a 5th rounder, wow makes the deal we got for Braylon look like the Herschel Walker deal.

Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital.

Sanchez has no excuses this year. THey have all-stars at every position on that offense with the exception of qb. Heck they're even moving into a new stadium, so he can't make the excuse of the winds.

I don't agree with that at all. Sanchez is a potential franchise QB. Edwards is a very solid WR and so is Holmes. Jets have one of the best teams in the NFL now and they are young (besides Tomlinson). Jets are closing in on the Patriots.

Rex Ryan runs things similar to Romeo. He's probably the biggest players' coach out there. This could all blow up in his face, if he's not careful.

Boy was that a lucky guess!

But I think it indicates that to trade Rogers with him looking to be suspended as well, we would mast likely get a fourth or fifth round offer until and unless this thing gets resolved ASAP.

Even then, knowing goodell and the message he has already sent about gun charges, I look for Rogers to get about a 4 game suspension too.

Sanchez was horrible last year. This was despite having a great OL and running game.

They had Cochery and Edward at WR, and a nice target at TE in Dustin Keller. He threw for something like 160 yards/game, with 12 TDs and 20 INTs. Not terribly impressive as far as I'm concerned. Hell, if he'd been in Cleveland and put together the exact same year every pundit in the country would be writing him off as a bust.

The Jets were already a pretty loaded team, and now they add Holmes.

This year Sanchez has no excuses. He must produce.

I wonder who steps up for them, Wallace, perhaps Sweed? Or perhaps this changes their draft plans.

They don't seem to really care what kind of guys they are though.

Cromartie isn't smart enough to wear a condom or at least pull out. I mean how dumb do you have to be. It's really not that hard.

Edwards is a head case.

Holmes is in trouble with the law.

You have to have talent to win. But you have to some good guys to keep everybody steady. Me thinks the JETS might be biting off more than they can chew.

This is great for us. Is it going to be great for the JETS?

We'll see.

Sanchez was a rookie last year. And started only one year in college.

As a rookie he got his team to the AFC Championship and played well in the playoffs.

I disagree. If anything he passed the eye test. The mistakes seemed to be mistakes due to inexperience, not lack of talent. Or not due to the moment being too big. It was just the opposite with Quinn ... moment either seemed too big ... or he just didn't look to have the talent to get it done.

If Sanchez had the exact same year here, I would be resting easy now knowing we had our franchise QB and could finally focus on something else.

Sometimes you have to be able to see past the numbers.

Sanchez did make more aggressive mistakes. That's more typical of young QBs.

He did have a fantastic game against the Bengals. (completion-wise) I was really happy to see that as it sent a division rival home disappointed, but that really was the exception and not the rule. Overall, they won 2 playoff games (and lost 1) with him completing 12, 12, and 17 passes .... for 4 TDs and 2 INT.

Sanchez threw for

182 yards against the Bengals

100 yards against the Chargers

257 yards against the Colts

Which game did they lose?

They rushed for 175 yards against the Bengals.

169 against the Chargers

86 against the Colts.

There's the truest test of whether or not the jets won a game or not. Without their running attack, they don't win. period.

Maybe Sanchez will become that guy who can take them to a championship when other aspects of the offensive gameplan go wrong .... but I have some doubts. I'm really not worried that we passes on a franchise guy here. I think that he'll become a servicable guy .. but not a great QB. JMHO

As a rookie, Ryan used the running game far more as to not put too much on Sanhez's shoulders as a rookie. Pretty smart strategy IMO.

Just sort of an add on to your post. I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head Y-town.

Back to the main topic for a minute ....

I knew that Holmes was going to be on his way out when I heard a radio report that Rooney sat down with Holmes (and Roethlisberger, separately) ..... and Holmes basically told Rooney to mind his own business when the whole legal issus matter arose. I guess it wasn't a cordial meeting .... and Rooney left determined to get rid of Holmes at that point. That report broke about a week ago .... and there he goes to NYC.

I disagree. They're one year further away from Coach Mangini's teachings. More inmates are coming in to run the asylum.

Every single move the Jets have made since trading for Favre have been "moves to make a splash for the sake of making a splash" like all our FA/trading under Savage (which got us nowhere fast).

Couple that with Rex Ryan's "rah-rah BS" and you have the makings of a disaster.

The Jets remind me of the Bengals to a certain degree. A team that, when things are going well, is really tough. But, when the crap hits the fan, they fold.

I'm not saying the Jets will do that, but it's just a similarity, IMO. The Bengals would play well, but as soon as they hit a little adversity (and I'm not talking just about Chris Henry dying, but adversity on the field), they falter.

Frankly, I have nothing against the Jets, but I do get tired of the constant stroking by the media. I mean, we get it, Rex Ryan is the 2nd coming of Christ and the Browns are stupid for getting rid of a guy like Edwards.

Anyway, should be an interesting game this year at CBS.

Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards...now that is a great statement by the Jets front office and their commitment toward building a quality football team.

Hope the Jets have full time lawyers and shrink on staff because they may need them if Braylon and Holmes decide to join forces and partake of NY's nightlife....

...then again, maybe Braylon is still hung up on the Ohio State thing...if Holmes catches while Braylon drops, the NY media will have a field day with Braylon over his OSU/Mich hang up.

On a serious note...I hate to see players with great potential screw up their lives because they did not take advantage of their chance. Being a star in the NFL is a great opportunity but with a very limited window of opportunity...

Hmm, maybe that's even a better comparison, though I think it kind of makes the same point.

A question I have is, what does this mean for Braylon? I have to think Holmes is the no. 1 WR there, and rightfully so. The guy is pretty dumb for getting in trouble, but there's no doubt he is a really good WR. Braylon, on the other hand, is a pretty good athlete, but maybe not the greatest WR in the world. Competent, when he wants to be.

And Braylon is on a 1 year contract. I won't be surprised to see him gone after this season.

one thing about it though.. the Jets WILL field a talented team...

I personally think now the Jets should trade Braylon.. He can't catch. Holmes may be in trouble with the law, but the guy can catch and get YAC.

Trade Braylon and draft another WR to replace the bum.

Mardy Gilyard would be a good pickup for them.. Carlton Mitchell if they want someone taller..

Some have suggested that Leon Washington was part of the deal that took Holmes to the Jets?

Why would the Steelers trade him 'just' for a 5th? Wouldn't they gain more by keeping him this season then losing him to Free Agency and getting a better Compensatory pick?

Something doesn't add up!

It will be interesting to see what the Steelers do in the draft with Ward getting older, and Sweed not being able to hold on to the ball. Wallace is a nice WR but is he good enough to be a #2 in their offense?

At least it will be entertaining to watch the Jets on "Hard Knocks" this summer.

I wonder if Mike Tannenbaum actually wore a bandana over his face when he made this trade....maybe passed the Steelers a note that said "Your WR or your life"

This is easily the most lopsided trade I've seen all offseason. 1,000 yard receiver for a pick who would likely get practice squaded.

Next story up...Roethlisberger traded for egg salad sandwich...

I think this trade is more of a message to Ben than anything. The Steelers get rid of a troubled WR, but, he was a talent and did a lot for the Steeler offense and for Ben at QB because of his ability to stretch the field.

This was done as a message to Holmes but more so as a message to Ben. I believe someone in the Steeler organization now sits Ben down and says something to the fact that he is out of chances. Shape up or you will end up like Mr Holmes.

While I feel Ben's offenses are worse than Holme's, no franchise is going to trade or cut their franchise QB.. However, I do believe the Steelers will cut ties with Ben the next time he is in trouble.

Let's not fool ourselves,, they will, like any other club in the league, treat Ben differently than any other player... This doesn't signal anything regarding ben.. Nothing...

I know this isn't what some want to hear, but so far, Ben hasn't been convicted of anything.. At this moment, the worse that can be said is that his judgement is suspect..
