They do it in quite a few places, it's called the Polar Plunge. My wife's hospital sponsors a group, the Cornwall Penguins. They get a big turnout and raise a pretty good amount of money, especially since there is no overhead. Every cent of the money raised goes right to the event.

Interesting - never heard of the Polar Plunge before. I'll have to look for events in the Cleveland area so I can support it. That's so cool that your wife and her hospital group supports this.

Thanks again everyone. I have another child on the autism spectrum, Diane, who is 23 years old. She also skates. Unfortunately we didn't get a good video clip of her at the meet, but here's a link to one of her freestyle lessons.
