Marshall to Dolphins

By Adam Schefter
ESPN
Archive

The Denver Broncos are trading wide receiver Brandon Marshall to the Miami Dolphins for a second-round pick in next week's NFL draft and what league sources say is an additional second-round pick in 2011.

The trade is contingent upon the league processing the paperwork and Marshall passing his physical, neither of which is expected to be an issue on Wednesday.

Marshall is scheduled to fly to Miami to take his physical and, if he passes, sign what will be one of the most lucrative wide receiver deals in NFL history, according to league sources. In return, the Broncos will get two high draft picks for a player who caused them headaches in addition to making plays.

In little more than one year, with a pair of blockbuster trades, Denver has recouped two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a third-round pick and quarterback Kyle Orton in exchange for Jay Cutler and Marshall.

The Broncos now head into next Thursday's draft armed with three picks in the top two rounds, but with a big hole fill at wide receiver. Marshall caught 101 passes for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He has 327 career receptions for 4,019 yards and 25 touchdowns in four seasons, all in Denver.

The trade also shakes things up in the AFC East, as Miami will match and arguably top the deal the New York Jets made earlier this week, when they traded a fifth-round draft pick for talented but troubled Steelers recevier Santonio Holmes.

Marshall is one of the game's best young wide receivers, a mercurial talent at the position Miami needed help at most. He is in the prime of his career. But like Holmes, he also brings a reputation of being difficult to handle and a legal record that has him one strike from a year-long suspension.

Once Marshall signed his $2.5 million tender with the Broncos on Tuesday, it freed Denver to begin shopping him. Miami was hot after Marshall, as was Seattle. Tampa Bay showed some interest and even the Jets considered making a play for Marshall before their deal for Holmes, according to sources.

Adam Schefter is an ESPN NFL Insider.

Dolphins trying to trade WR Ginn, possibly during next week's draft
By Jason La Canfora | NFL.com

The Miami Dolphins have been pursuing options to trade wide receiver Ted Ginn, league sources said Tuesday.
Ginn, a first-round draft pick by the Dolphins in 2007, has excelled on special teams, but he hasn't regularly contributed as a receiver. He had 38 receptions for 454 yards and one touchdown last season.

HQ video delivered by Akamai
Ginn's lack of productivity and relatively heavy rookie contract have turned off some teams, and two league executives said they don't anticipate the Dolphins receiving considerable value for the three-year pro in a trade.

Still, Ginn could be a part of a package on the first night of the draft next Thursday, as the Dolphins might trade up from the 12th spot. Clemson running back C.J. Spiller is among the players for whom they could make a move.

The Dolphins are looking for playmakers on the outside and still could make a trade for Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall, a restricted free agent who received a first-round tender.

I'd be OK with getting Ginn. Call me a homey, but he'd add some much needed speed, and give Mass a chance to get open.
OK... OK... I gotta say it...
LET'S GET THIS GUY!!! lol

That's not true. In a lot of cases you don't even need to be able to do your job... I've fired some of the most incompetent construction managers and engineers you've ever seen before (in and out of work) then 6 months later I'll see them at a conference because they got hired by somebody else... and these aren't great construction managers with a bit of an attitude problem, these are LOUSY construction managers...

Slightly more than the Steelers got for Holmes.

I heard on the radio this morning that Marshall signed the tender. I figured a trade was coming.

I mocked a WR in the 2nd for Miami, and I'm sure they would rather have Marshall than Benn.

Good move. I hope they sweep the Jets, I'm already way past tired of that team. Raiders East.

3 Months, giving him that much time?!? Seems to me the 'fins gave up a lot for a player with his baggage. Two 2nd round picks, glad it wasn't us.

Right on, D-shot. Sad correction: In sports, the Bigs, it is calleds a lifestyle. Like the bar as set by BR in P-burg or the Keith Richards School of Clean Living. NFL needs to hammer this stuff harder IMO.
Asked it before on here: What must someone do to get banned for life in the NFL (despite fumbles and dropsy of course)?

The AFC East is fast becoming the best division in the NFL.

The Jets are stockpiling players, the Pats are the Pats- always competitive, and the Dolphins have a lot of potential.

Then there is the Bills, a class above the rest.

Ok, 3 out of 4 teams ain't too bad.

Yes, three of the AFC East teams should be above average. Good thing we play all four this year.

Well, if they're that good...the other three AFC North teams could get beaten up by them too. We really only have to play our division above .500 to contend (not easy, I know).

I'm not sure I'd want Ginn for a 6th round pick. Fast, no hands, and we already have Cribbs for special teams. I want guys that can catch and run routes (speed is overrated).

Ginn has been real good at getting open in Miami, but yeah his hands have been terrible. they weren't bad as a Buckeye, but he did catch a lot of shorter passes.

as for ST, if we got him, he would take-over PR duties and one of the 2-KR spots. most teams leave 2 returners back there. now, who do you kickoff to if we had both back there?

Cribbs - the best KR in the NFL
Ginn - a good KR in his own right, and he would have Cribbs blocking for him as well.

I'm not saying we give up much for him, but if Miami wanted to give up #12, their 2nd round pick, and Ginn to move up to #7, I'd listen and probably demand a 3rd rounder next year

(assuming our top target/targets are gone)

What was it for 47 Million? How much was guaranteed? That's quite a bit of cash if true.

Marshall gets $24 million guaranteed
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal
April 14, 2010 11:34 AM ET

Brandon Marshall wanted $10-million-per-year, and he got it.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports Marshall will get $50 million over the next five years as part of a four-year, $47 million extension tacked on to his scheduled $2.5 million salary in 2010.

The deal includes $24 million in guaranteed money, and close to $29 million in the first three years of the contract. It's not backloaded, although we're looking forward to seeing more details to learn if there are any natural outs for Miami if things don't go well.

This deal essentially matches Larry Fitzgerald's last contract, although not in guaranteed money. Still, it arguably makes Marshall the league's highest paid receiver, depending on how you want to count the money.

Thanks...WOW that's a boatload of cash to throw at such a big risk...but we'll see if Parcells' gut feeling is justified.

Well I remember Holmgren stated he wanted to pickup a super fast WR to open up the passing game and Ginn fits that bill. If the Dolphins take a 5th for him I would trade for him cause I certainly wouldn't give a third for him and we don't have a fourth.

Ted Ginn, we gotta get this guy?

He can't catch, he'd fit in here?

If he is better than Syndric Steptoe, If he is better than Chansi Stukey, which of course I think he probably is

then I would hope they would consider the option.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

He's faster...but going to put up the same production as either of these two.

Ginn sucks. Cannot catch, cannot run routes, cannot block. The only way I'd take a shot on him is if Mangini thought he could make him a CB like he was recruited to be at Ohio State.

Other wise, absolutely, 100% no way in hell.

Excuse me, but most people's legal troubles do not have an effect on their job unless it involves jail time. I guess feeling high and mighty is more important than reality.

Also the article about the Dolphins wanting to trade Ginn was written before the Marshall trade. I imagine this trade alters their entire offensive plan. I would suggest finding more current evidence of their intent to trade Ginn before speculating further.

7 for the 12th and Ginn MIGHT be enough.

IF there is someone there at 7 that Miami REALLY wants.

It would be a draft day deal though, as Miami isn't going to take the risk of moving up without seeing how the draft plays out.

I would say throw in their 3rd rounder and it would be done deal....then that leaves us with 4 3rds......package two of em and move up into the 2nd.....

so the 12th pick, ted ginn jr, and their 3rd rounder for our 7th overall? if berry is gone then done deal! imo

Does anyone agree that the Dolphins are now the team to beat in the AFC East???

Were the Jets really as good as their record last year? They got in on Indy and NO benching their starters and their offense relied solely on Thomas Jones who is gone. Sure they added weapons to the passing game but Mark Sanchez threw 20 interceptions last season, and for all we know might now pan out. I just don't understand the praise for NYJ when the Dolphins will have Ronnie Brown healthy for a whole season, a young strong armed pocket passing QB, an elite receiver, solid Oline with Jake Long anchoring it. Not to mention they spent some high picks shoring up that secondary.

IMHO this team is the team to beat in the East, not the washed up Pats or the insanely overrated NYJ because of the market they're in.
