Sacks leader Jason Taylor, rival Jets agree to deal April 20, 2010 CBSSports.com wire reports http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/13257...headlines;otherNEW YORK -- Free-agent linebacker Jason Taylor agreed to a contract with the Jets on Tuesday, another bold move by New York that bolsters the league's No. 1 defense with a fierce pass rusher from the rival Miami Dolphins. The agreement was confirmed to the Associated Press by a person familiar with the deal. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced the signing. The deal was first reported by ESPN.com and the Miami Herald. The cable network's website said it is for two years. The 35-year-old Taylor, the NFL's active sacks leader, has played 12 of his 13 seasons with the Dolphins. He now joins a team he has long considered an enemy. He visited the Jets two weeks ago but left without a deal, waiting to see if Miami would re-sign him after the draft. After vacationing in Costa Rica last weekend, Taylor decided to go with coach Rex Ryan and the Jets. Taylor has had a contentious relationship with Jets fans, calling them ignorant and classless. Now, he'll try to endear himself to those same fans, the way Brett Favre did in Minnesota or Donovan McNabb hopes to do in Washington. Either way, it's the latest headline-grabbing acquisition by the Jets, who have clear intentions of making a Super Bowl run this season after losing in the AFC championship game to Indianapolis in January. Already loaded with story lines for its appearance on HBO's Hard Knocks during training camp this summer, New York has also signed running back LaDainian Tomlinson and safety Brodney Pool, and traded for wide receiver Santonio Holmes and cornerback Antonio Cromartie. Taylor, the 2006 Defensive Player of the Year, has 127 1/2 career sacks and provides the Jets with a proven pass rusher who should fit right into Ryan's aggressive 3-4 defensive scheme. He will likely be used in a situational pass-rushing role as a hybrid linebacker-defensive end. His addition could allow the Jets to focus on other positions with the 29th overall pick in the draft Thursday night. The former Dancing With the Stars contestant -- he finished runner-up to Kristi Yamaguchi in 2008 -- recently expressed a desire to remain with the Dolphins. But, Miami general manager Jeff Ireland said the team would wait until after the draft before deciding whether to make an offer. A scheduled meeting with Taylor and Dolphins officials was also reportedly canceled recently as Ryan and the Jets aggressively pursued him. Several Jets players met Taylor during his visit to the team's facility in Florham Park, N.J., on April 8, and said they'd welcome him if he signed. The Jets showed him around the facility and took him on a helicopter tour of Manhattan and the new Meadowlands Stadium. Even Tomlinson was part of the recruiting process. "I pitched my part in trying to get him here," Tomlinson said two weeks ago. "Hopefully, things get done because we can definitely use him." While his best days are clearly behind him, Taylor still has plenty left. He had seven sacks, an interception, three forced fumbles and a fumble return for a touchdown last season. "He can do a lot of different things: drop in coverage, rush the passer and he's pretty good against the run," linebacker Calvin Pace said recently. "I think it would be pretty positive for us." Taylor played with the Dolphins from 1997-07 before playing one season in Washington. He returned to Miami last season with a one-year contract and said he wanted to keep playing, preferably with the Dolphins, rather than retire.

The Jets are going to have one heck of a team ... ... if the current year is 2007. Does it just seem like they are picking up "name" players for the sake of the name? Surprised they haven't taken a flyer on Larry Johnson yet.

That's what I mean by "they're making a splash just for the sake of making one."
The Jets are all about PR...all flash, some substance, but the flash will ultimately cause them to crumble once they receive some adversity.
I fully expect the Browns to win one for Mangini and Rob Ryan in this one.

Even if they are just making PR moves with some of these signings they still have a pretty solid team right now. Now making it to the AFC championship last year was somewhat of a fluke but I'd still say they are one of the top 10 teams in the NFL right now.
Just IMO.

You cant say that the Jets are not a better team than the one that lost the AFC Championship game. But Im looking for Sanchez to hit the Sophmore slump.

Correct. It appears the JETS are in Superbowl or bust mode. I liken it to the '97 Marlins, I know, different sports. However, the all or nothing actions appear similar. Only time will tell.

The guy completed 53% of his passes and threw only 12 TDs against 20 INTs. He threw for 152 yards/game.
If he doesn't improve upon those numbers he'll probably get strung up in Times Square. He better pray that their defense and runnng game remain strong.

if Sanchez really sucks does that mean Mangini did well passing on him or will the Mangini haters still find some kind of excuse

While I like most of the Jets moves this offseason, I really don't like the way Rex runs the show in NY.
If things go bad for the Jets they'll crumble like the 2008 Browns.

if we picked Sanchez and he put up those numbers(and let's be honest, they would have likely been worse), he would have been labelled a bust by all in the media and fans.
however, even though Sanchez struggled and had some absolutely horrific games, by the end of the year with the NFL's #1 running game and #1 defense, he learned how to get out of his teams way and "manage" the game well enough to go on that playoff run. He looked pretty good doing it too and he definitely should use that experience/confidence to improve on his numbers this year.
long way of saying that if mangini picked him, he would be lambasted for reaching on a bust QB. since we traded him away, he'll be lambasted for giving the Jets their QB. no win scenario.

I don't think Sanchez sucks as much as he's just totally inexperienced, How many games did he start in college...I don't remember but I know it wasn't many.
He seems like a good young QB that is just struggling to find his way. I do think he's gonna be just fine in time.

I like this post and I agree 100%. Yet i want to start from the top. The jets have made big splashes. Jason Taylor is a NAME, the player is a shadow of his former self and will be lucky to contribute 5 sacks yet he is a veteran pretense or presence, ditto LT, washed up and they rid themselves of the more popular and more productive Thomas Jones. They add Santonio which now makes Braylon, what the forgotten #3wr? A clashing of egos not to mention there goes Braylon's bargaining power for more $$$. Are the Jets better? Losing Jones was two steps back, adding LT was a half step BACK, adding Taylor is a step SIDEWAYS, adding Santonio was two steps forward, the effect on Edwards is a step or two back. Lots of shuffling in this Jets Rumba but I am not seeing a dance into the elite.
Now back to the comment here about Sanchez and the slack you cut him with your prescient words...." a good young QB struggling to find his way" and to me that describes the QB we showed the door after 12 friggin starts and we have Jake the mistake and Senecaca Wallace. We have to get a QB now, again as we once again showed no patience in ridding us of Quinn or rashly jumping for Jake.

Stop trying to transform "Jason Taylor signs with Jets" into "Brady Quinn didn't enough starts".
Sanchez actually showed some promise in his starts. He was just in over his head after starting only one season in college.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Ahh if I had the prescience to know Mr. Webster was busy checking posts I may have been more careful, I think that was a correct usage do you not agree Danny?

Yeah, I agree how you could use the exact words to cut Snachez slack and yet vilify Quinn who had less starts in his time in Cleveland. But patience in Quinn will rewarded in Denver and had we exhibited the same patience in Sanchez he would have been riding the pines for Mangini. Your own words were to good not to use.

he's got one year in the league and while Sanchez stats weren't amazing, he showed poise and a degree of comfort and consistency. At least as it relates to a rookie.
Quinn couldn't beat out Charlie Frye in his first year, couldn't beat out Anderson in his second year and when he finally beat Anderson out, he lost the job again within the first month of the season.
so please, give it a freakin rest.. Quinn is a guy that I would have loved to succeed.. believe me when I say, I get NO JOY from his failures or if you prefer, the teams failure.
Being a Browns fan, I first and foremost, want them to succeed. So I really wanted any one of the many young arms we've had in here to succeed. Not just Quinn.. anyone of them succeeding would have made my day so to speak.
So you can quit with all the Quinn is the best, didn't get a fair shot, will come back to haunt us stuff.. it's old and I doubt many folks actually care anymore.. we are on to the next chapter for better or worse, the Quinn chapter is closed...
Keep in mind, while you think you know something about QB's, and perhaps you do, time will tell. The powers in Berea didn't agree with your thinking.
They are much closer to the issue then you are. they should know more.. let it rest already..

Couch is still the best QB this team has had since '99. I'm not a big believer in the Jason Taylor signing. Yeah he's a name, production wise though.....Far as locker room presence etc, to me thats up to the coaches to set the tone. Seems like he is just trying to get a ring.

I'm still here! And I still think it's unfair to call Couch a bust. The team sucked then, and he had a lot more ability than Brady Quinn. That's for sure. Couch brought this team from behind in a bunch of games for us to win.
Same thing with Sanchez, the guy is accurate with his throws. Quinn is inaccurate and can't throw the ball deep either. He doesn't have an NFL ARM Akron Joe. Couch had an NFL arm. He just didn't have NFL receivers or NFL O-Linemen, besides Tucker. Mark Sanchez has an NFL arm. If you look at his throws to his receivers, they're on the mark, short or medium passes. Quinn, off the mark even on short passes.

This was very well thought out and I agree with everything you said in this post....Anyone who puts on an Orange helmet I want to be great. Why? Because I want the Browns to be great! Quinn was a feel good story at first, same with Frye....we need to get that young rookie qb who we can groom, and I think his name is Colt McCoy. Let him sit and watch Delhomme, while taking pointers from Wallace all season long and next year let him take the controls!
