Colt McCoy: Browns' Mike Holmgren compared him to Steve Young, Joe Montana

Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy joined 790 The Zone in Atlanta this morning to talk about his shoulder, his pro day and the NFL Draft, which starts Thursday.

McCoy said his shoulder is back to 100 percent. He was really happy with his pro day performance and has enjoyed working out in front of NFL coaches, scouts and general managers.

"I have been cleared and working out every day and throwing every day and I feel really good," McCoy told The Zone. "I have had a couple of private workouts with some teams, and I continue to get stronger and stronger. My shoulder right now is as strong as it has ever been. I am weighing more, and I feel better than I ever have before."

McCoy mentioned that even though there have been some public doubts about his future in the NFL, there have been multiple comparisons drawn between him and some of the greatest quarterbacks to have ever played the game.

"I just left the Browns and Coach Holmgren kind of compared me to Steve Young and Joe Montana and just said that I have the intangibles that they had at this point in their career when they were coming out of college," McCoy said. "[Holmgren] expects me to be just like they were. I think that is a good comparison and obviously people would compare me to Drew Brees a little bit. I think because of our height.

"I know how hard I prepare and nobody is going to work harder than me or be more prepared going into a game than I am, and I expect to do exactly what I did in college, and that is come in there and win games. I know that it is going to be different. I know that it is going to be a transition, but I am going to work my tail off and earn the respect of my teammates and coaches and go to work."

McCoy was asked if he could hand-pick the team he'll be playing for next year, who it would be. McCoy didn't directly answer the question, but he did praise Cleveland quite a bit.

"I absolutely enjoyed Coach Holmgren. He is a class act, and I could definitely see myself playing in their organization," McCoy said. "I think that it would be a tremendous opportunity and they have a lot of good things going for them and Coach [Eric] Mangini and their staff have been awesome. So, you never know.

"I know that God is going to put me in the right place and we'll go to work from there...I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead."

Haha, I dunno. My roommate from college played lacrosse and I always compared his game to Chad Pennington because he's a cerebral player who physically kept him from being great and was often injured. Used to make my best buddy furious because he was an eagles fan, didn't like Chad Pennington or the fact that they both were always injured, and probably wanted to be compared to Brian Dawkins.

But this interview makes me think McCoy is really trying to suck up to us. This could possibly be because everyone on espn is saying "Browns in 2nd round" and he's buying into it. With the signing of Sheldon Brown, that opposite corner isn't the same need it used to be, and I would be open that picking a QB in the 2nd or if we deem him good enough, moving up to get him late first.

But yeah, I dunno, seems pretty fluffy and like McCoy is trying to suck up to us. We shall see!

i'm sure i read this in another thread, so don't be surprised if it gets whacked....

I go back to him saying something along the lines "i'm likely to say any number of things before the draft....." But why in the heck if you really wanted a player would you advertise to the league he has the makings of Steve Young and Joe Montana. That just does not add up. Now maybe Colt was supposed to keep his trap shut. I think this virtually makes it certain that McCoy is not a brown. If he is the target, another team will leap frog in front of us to get him.

And along that same line of thinking-- the "i wish i liked him better statement" seems to put Clausen very much in play at #7.

yeah it might. i haven't been through some of the lengthy draft discussions and I know the Brown's are targeting McCoy ... let me rephrase, the media tells us the Browns are targeting McCoy ... so I thought I'd just post it as I read it. It wouldn't my first post to get whacked lol.

For some reason I can see another team packaging some picks together to move ahead of us in the 2nd to grab him.

This...

And who knows maybe wally is fanning the fire here trying to get somebody to jump us and his real guy falls. I have wandered all along why he has not said anything about Lefevour who seems to me has everything Colt has, plus a little taller. I don't know if his leadership skill are in the same department, but his arm seems to be accurate and a little stronger.

Or maybe holmgren is palying the reverse smoke screen!! So everybody will think it's smoke and not buy the hype then get his guy......Good Times!

This strikes me purely as last-minute marketing.

That and, well, what else is the kid gonna say?

Browns is the Browns

... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Who wouldn't,., but do you think it's accurate? there's the question..

If Holmgren truly thinks he's like either young or Montana,, he damn well better take him with the #7 pick...

And if he really thinks he compares favorably to Montana we probably need to trade up to get him

Just reread my post and realize I wasn't clear I was joking that we should trade up from #7 to make sure we get him.

LOL and I'm not sure my thoughts were clear,., I'm not suggesting that we move up to get McCoy,, But I was commenting that if Holmgren and the Browns brain trust thinks he's really the next Young or Montana,,, perhaps they should......

this was out weeks ago so this definitely isn't draft day mental mind trick games or anything. listening to MH talk about colt ini a recent presser, he is genuinely impressed with mccoy and i really feel like we're likely to take him if things go according to plan. i wonder if we may even trade into end of first round to make sure we get him. well we'll see today won't we.

so excited.
