Talent still plentiful in second and third rounds

NEW YORK -- The NFL's first foray into Thursday night primetime television for the draft provided plenty of drama: trades, unexpected picks and plenty of divisive Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.

Friday night also promises to have plenty of thrills, even if the prospects don't hold quite as much cache with fans as the first rounders. The league is treating this as basically a "second first round," giving it a primetime Friday slot and inviting second-tier prospects like Wake Forest cornerback Brandon Ghee and Texas defensive tackle Lamarr Houston to come to the stage just like in the first round.

And with Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen still on the board, the NFL will certainly get the ratings it wants. Chances are that he won't last long, however, with Minnesota having the second pick in the round (via its first-round trade with Detroit) and Cleveland (No. 38), Oakland (No. 39) and Buffalo (No. 41) not far behind. Former Irish head coach Charlie Weis may also try to talk his new friends with the Chiefs into taking his three-year quarterback at No. 36.

Clausen isn't the only legitimate first-round pick who fell due to team needs and the strong talent available this year. Scouts talked about USC free safety Taylor Mays as a top 10 pick in the 2009 draft, but now he may be lucky to be a top 40 selection because of concerns about his coverage abilities. Texas outside linebacker Sergio Kindle should be coveted by 3-4 teams looking for a pass rusher, while USC defensive end/outside linebacker Everson Griffen is inconsistent but athletic enough to make an impact for both 4-3 and 3-4 teams. Charles Brown (USC) and Rodger Saffold (Indiana) should also be picked up early in the second as potential starting left tackles.

UCLA defensive tackle Brian Price could have gone late in the first, but the Rams may select him with the first pick in the second round after trading Adam Carriker to Washington. The likelihood of that happening is small, however, as teams line up to offer their current second-round pick/future first-round pick plus a third/future second-pick to get one of the players listed above. St. Louis will probably receive an offer it can't refuse.

History has shown that second-round picks can be very successful; take defensive ends Mark Gastineau and Howie Long and middle linebackers Rickey Jackson and Mike Singletary as examples. Last year, second-round picks including free safety Jairus Byrd (No. 42, Buffalo), free safety Louis Delmas (No. 33, Detroit), middle linebacker James Laurinaitis (No. 35, St. Louis), running back LeSean McCoy (No. 53, Philadelphia), cornerback Sean Smith (No. 61, Miami) and offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer (No. 58, New England) played significant roles for their new teams as rookies.

The depth of this draft means the third round will be fruitful, as well. They may not have Hall of Fame careers like late third-round picks quarterback Joe Montana and offensive tackle Jackie Slater, but 2009 draftees cornerback Derek Cox (No. 73, Jacksonville), running back Shonn Greene (No. 65, NY Jets), wide receiver Mike Wallace (No. 84, Pittsburgh) and cornerback Lardarius Webb (No. 88, Baltimore) look to be long-time contributors.

If no trades, I see Colt being there for our pick. As you said, Minny is the only team there who possibly gores QB, and if they do I think they go Clausen.

I am thinking Cody, which would then allow is to trade Rogers....I think Rogers would bring a 2nd round pick even with his troubles, which I don't think will amount to a major problem.

The safety position is deep...the Browns could move up to get Mays or wait to see if Kam Chancellor falls to them in the 2nd round.

Clausen in the second would be a good pick too but Holmgren may be looking to add a QB with one of our 3-3rd round picks.

A lot of good talent...considered to be 1st round talent...still left on the board.

For some reason, I have a vibe about Kindle.

of course many were/are thinking to trade back up for a guy, but with the way it played out yesterday, there are >6 guys i'd be very happy to see on our team, so i think we stay put.

e.g. you've got Mays, McCoy, Tate, Campbell, Griffin, Cody, & Allen available, and with Clausen dropping, Minny or someone will likely take him ahead of us, so probably 2 of those listed (or insert yfp here) will be there.

this will be fun, and the 2nd round guys will get some well-deserved attention compared to previous years...

Not sure where we will go in the 2nd. I think Torrell Troup DT Central Florida is one pick and a safety are the targets in the 3rd. So while we might draft a Mays or an Allen I think we go a different direction in the 2nd. And While I really like Cody and Price, I don't think we go that way in the 2nd either.

Oline? We really spent a lot of time looking at Welch the OT from Vandy. I think we are targeting him in the 5th or 6th round. Does that preclude an olineman in the 2nd? No so this is a possibility. Asomough? Perhaps. I like Veldheer in the 3rd.

The OLB's are deep and are all about the same grade which is 3rd round. TE ehh. i like Pitta but this might be too high.

I like Benn but he doesn't seem to fit what MH has said he is looking for in a WR. Golden Tate? Will we really take yet another 2nd round Wr?

I think we trade down. Drop to the middle of the round and take Troup.

I've been the token Colt McCoy pimp around here for awhile. I REALLY hope we take him assuming he's there.

Give me Colt McCoy... and I'll pass on Mt. Cody... too early for a fat mammoth IMO. You can get those kind of guys on Saturday in rounds 4-7.

I like Taylor Mays at 38.

I'm in this boat, too. The QB class for next year's draft looks real solid. I'd rather wait just one more year, hopefully they'll have that rookie pay scale in place, and we'll get our guy then where QB is going to be that draft's strength probably. McCoy and Clausen are a round out of Bradford's talent-range. Too many question marks. Get the guy next year so he'll step into a more success-ready situation, cost less, and have less red flags. We can get a true franchise QB next one. No need to lose your load and not go BPA.

That being said, I would be okay with it if they pulled the trigger and thought they had an answer at QB. I'm just saying if you do it even here at the top of round two, you better be pretty damn sure. A new RT or FS look pretty important to me...

If we don't go the QB route, Taylor Mays makes the most sense.

Then in the 3rd grab another Taylor: Taylor Price of Ohio THE State University.

I think tonight is going to be exciting as hell!!

So when do you guys think we're going to get our fast wideout like Holmgren has been preaching forever, 3rd round today? There are so many good WR's left on the board. I just hope there's not some kind of a chain reaction where all the teams start picking WR once Tate is selected. I wouldn't mind getting the guy Ford from Clemson, maybe Decker from Minny, Taylor Price from OU, or Shipley from Texas(wouldn't that be quite a pairing if we got Colt in the previous round).

I think we can all agree WR is a position that needs to be addressed. I mean everytime they show WR depth for the browns, I just sort of cringe when I see Cribbs listed as our #2 guy. Just as many others on here have said, hey it IS Cribbs, but he can't play wideout.

if we add any of the guys listed, and then put the list of our WR's up... will u still cringe?

Our young WR's have a lot to prove to not only themselves, but their teammates and the fans...

I'm not excited with our group, but they have a high ceiling for growth and production.

Then its gets dicey for me.... Clausen is tempting but Holmgren apparently doesn't dig him so I doubt it will happen. Plus the Vikes look poised to grab him.

For those who say, we can grab a QB next year....sure we can...in theory. But who knows where we land in the draft and who ahead of us will be looking. I'd rather we take the QB now where we have the opportunity and have a year to develop him while Delhomme plays.

I think its going to be interesting to see what happens with the first couple picks this afternoon. I expect at least 2 trades, maybe more, before the Browns pick. At this point, I'm going to say it will look like this...

33…Philadelphia…Taylor Mays…S (trade with STL)
34…Minnesota...Akwasi Owusu-Ansah…CB

As far as my "top 6 draft board" at this point, its.
a) Mays
b) McCoy
c) Kindle
d) Allen
e) Saffold
f) Tate

Understand your point, but if Sergio Kendle is on the board at 38 do you think we pass on him to take McCoy, I know MH loves him, so it's highly possible, but to pass on Sergio might be very diffecult for us.

It's possible we take Kindle at #38 if he's there, then try to package together a couple 3rds to get back into the top of the 2nd round to take McCoy, too.

It's not unlikely we end up with Haden, Kindle, McCoy, and then maybe a WR (Decker?) in the 3rd.

We used to have a physically-gifted, second round safety who loved to hit. The knock on him is that he has no instincts for the game.

There is another safety available in the second round who is physically gifted and loves to hit...but...wait for it...the knock on him is that he has no instincts for the game.

I am hoping we stay away from Mays.

We have other options at S and other positions that need upgraded rather than to take a safety with poor instincts.

A safety with poor instincts is like a QB who can't read a defense.

I agree.

Let someone else try to turn Mays into something worthwhile. He's going to need a LOT of work.

I actually think it's more possible that we take McCoy with 38 and trade back into the middle of the second round to land Mays. I think Allen goes before Mays, and with the hawks already taking thomas I think Mays slides into the mid or late 2nd.

There are some reports that Kindle has some injury.....I even heard around here that he may miss the entire next year over a stress fracture that needs surgery. But you know how that stuff gets going. I even talked to one group of people that think this "injury" will take him into round 3 or 4. I don't know what to think about it all and I can't find any of it in print anywhere. [shrugs] The guy has major talent so there must be something going on, he is twice (yes I said that) the pass rusher Hughes (TCWho) is.
Somethings up..

Antoher thing is that Benn is still on the board and most people think he will be the next WR taken. How far does that make Tate fall. I would definatly trade back into the 2nd to nab Tate.....I really like him, then maybe look at Major Wright or Rolle later.

I really, really do not want to waste a pick drafting Colt McCoy with all of this other talent on the board. You've got two very good WR'ers, a couple of very good safeties, a couple of good pass rushers, several good 3-4 linemen and a running back or two that are all available, I just don't want to draft a QB just because we "need" one.

I don't really care if we take QB or not, if Wally likes one of the two that is fine with me. I love Tate and I really like Nate Allen. Kindle worries me a little, but there is a ton of great players left. I was just throwing out some options for the pro QB people out there. The only reason we are even discussing it is becuase of the media Hype. We should be able to get McCoy in round 3....that is where he belongs. Cluasen would be a steal in round two.....but man he is one kid I have trouble rooting for. He does have the arm to make it though.

I think there is no doubt we are going to pick twice in the second round, I just don't see us picking up this many rooks.....gonna use a few picks to move up I think.
