Good pick... but Reshad Jones would have been even better.

A horrid defensive backfield suddenly has become full of many options!

Can't say they didn't address the needs here.

I would have also liked Riley Cooper.

I hate the Eagles, they picked a couple of guys directly before us that I wanted.

This doesn't make much sense to me. He's basically the same player as Ward.

Yeah I really wouldn't have complained had we picked him either. But i'm happy with Asante, I really like him.

Except he is bigger and has not nearly the same coverage skills.

I actually think Ward has more potential. If we like Asante at the same level as Ward, he would have been the pick at 38.

Aren't he and Ward both strong Safeties?

Ehhhh....

Asante can become one of the best safeties ever, so I guess you're right because of his size and speed...but the likelihood of him achieving his potential is very very small.

That being said, I think he'll become a pretty decent safety and a great special teamer.

Ward is going to be the Free Safety. He can cover AND hit.

That's not a bad thing.....

But Ward will hold down the FS spot while Asante holds down the SS spot. If these guy's develop well and Ward stays healthy we will have probably one of the toughest secondarys in the NFL.

Haden, Brown, Asante and Ward. The potential there is beyond scary, that's a pretty damn physical group right there.

Ward really isn't a coverage guy. He's a hard hitter who plays the run well. We have three strong safeties on our roster, and no free safeties.

Our backup safties were Sorenson and Adams going into today.........this pick makes a ton of sense to me. I would imagine we wanted the BPA who filled a need and Asante fits the bill.

And I think you're wrong.

He has a lot of coverage skills, he just wasn't asked to be the cover guy in the Oregon system.

Sorry he wouldn't be better. We think he would but to the ones that really know him and done the research and know the defensive philisophy we run....MH and TH's is a better pick.

Again....i wanted WR Mitchell. That dosent meen he would be a better fit here.He was MY pick. Dosent meen he will be better.

Comon guys..ITS A FREAKIN 5TH ROUND PICK! What you expect a 1st rounder fall into our laps that all other 31 teams had brain freeze and passed?

Then still someone would gripe!!!!!

Thought Ward started at Cb and moved to safety after his injury because oregon was deep at Cb but thin at S.

I love the fact that this guy LOVES to hit people. We just added some serious attitude to our secondary.

Well ... we could have seen Suh fall to us in the 5th and someone would still pimp a WR no one has ever heard of instead ....

I am more than a little surprised that we haven't taken an DL at all in this draft.

Good pick.. Don't know a ton about this guy, but from what I've read he seems like he'll be able to help our horrid secondary.

I still want to get another WR... so hopefully with our last two picks we can find a decent WR.... I was hoping for the guy out of Flordia but I think Philly right in front of us took him. Oh well.... can't be sad with another safety.

I want a ferocious D backfield and we have a chance to have just that.

Did a great job of shoring up these positions and we weren't gonna build a championship team through this one draft. Just too many holes to fill.

Maybe teams wont march down the field torching our DB's in the next few years!

Not so much he doesn't have the skills, but he doesn't have very good instincts back deep at safety.

Dude it's the 5th round we aren't looking for a starting FS in the 5th round. I agree with you about Ward not being all that great in coverage and more of a SS, but it isn't like Elam didn't need to be replaced. I actually think Ward might play the SS and Elam the FS again this year. Is this what we really want?? Of course not, but all of our needs aren't getting filled this year.

Get good players this late in the draft.......screw need.

We could have taken Stevenson Sylvester ..... like Pittsburgh did.

Not to say that they'll never get anything out of the guy .... but who has even heard of this kid? lol

I hope we add a speed receiver in the 6th, just not sure who is left out there that fits the bill.

I also wouldn't mind Arthur Moats but we are already crowded at LB.

Some d-line depth would be nice as well.

Let me rephrase: The pick just doesn't make sense to me. So far every pick has been a need pick, and this one doesn't seem to fit there. I like Asante, just not the fit.

Mangini was a DB coach for a multi winning SB team.

I think I'll have a bit of faith in his abilities to work with these types of guys.

Man,, one minute our secondary isn't all that terrific.. the next, we have 3 young guys that have serious potential to be great... add Wright and dang.. If these kids can live up to thier billing,, whew,, this could be fun to watch.

we need two heavy hitters... Ward and Asante bring that...

Ward is the better player though. He covers better and plays the run better.

So to clarify, a SS who was 1st team all big 12 is a waste of a pick in the 5th round?

Sounds about right.

Definitely not a waste. I actually like the pick; I'm just confused. I assume they will try Ward at free safety, but it really isn't his best fit.

I thiought that Mangini didn't have a "Strong" and "Free" Safety in his defense ... but rather more of a "Left" and "Right" Safety.

I could be wrong .... but that sure seems consistent with what I see on the field, as well as what I have read/heard.

I just hope that these kid can cover well enough to be in position to take someone's head off if they go over the middle. One thing our defense has lacked forever is the "fear factor", with opposing receivers more than happy to go over the middle for passes.

I don't understand. Everything I see about Ward says he can cover. He was moved to safety after his injury, but still has good cover skills. I have to disagree with your assessment, even Mayock said he had good coverage skills. He may not be a great covering corner, but at safety, I believe he is going to prove to be good.
