link NEW YORK (AP) -- ESPN broadcast of the NFL draft has drawn the most viewers ever. With the first two rounds held in prime time for the first time, ESPN's three-day telecast had 3.7 million viewers, up 27 percent from 2009. It also attracted 2.85 million households, second most in draft history and up 24 percent from last year, according to Nielsen Media Research. The most households to watch a draft on ESPN came in 2006, when 2,000 more homes than this year tuned in. Even ratings for the third day, with Rounds 4-7, increased 10 percent to a 1.8. The final day was on Saturday this year, Sunday in 2009. ------ I wonder if this viewership bump has anything to do with the fact that it kills the Draft Parties and more people are watching it at home by themselves.. I don't think they were counting the number of people watching it at draft parties in the past... but I could be wrong... If they weren't then.. more people watching it this year, may be less than previous years.

Thats a good point. I know I didn't go to party and didn't watch it. It's just not the same in my opinion.

I think it also says a lot that it's the most ever to watch on ESPN. I watch on NFL network because I can't stand the guys on ESPN. I'm sure there are plenty like me so if it was only shown on ESPN like it used to be how much higher would the ratings be?

Bummer... now they have a reason to keep this up going forward. I was really hoping it would flop.

In my estimation they can't count things like that in the ratings but they were aware of it. They would prefer everyone watch it at home by themselves because that means higher ratings and more money.

I didn't mind the 3 day format as much as I originally thought I would...but I really wish they would have done a Friday, Saturday, Sunday thing instead of Thur. Fri. Sat......I mean coming in to work on Friday Morning was a real pain in the you know what.....

I agree. Fri/Sat/Sun would be much better.

I didn't mind the format and didn't even mind the Thur/Fri/Sat... I guess it might suck if the Browns are ever drafting near the end instead of the beginning but I'm sure I could find something about that to make me happy. (even though I did watch the whole thing just in case the Browns trading back into the first round)...

my GF watched it this year only b/c I had it on Thursday whereas before she would be out getting her nails done or go shopping on Saturday just to get away from watching the draft.,
I told her a month in advance what was going to be on TV that night.Like it or lump it.Surpisingly, she didn't hate it . I think that she is the kind of demographic the NFL was targeting. A "casual" fan.

I'm surprised so many hate this. For me it's great. It was always very hard for me to get a whole saturday to sit and watch the draft. Most of us have family things to do on the weekend. Between kids being run around for soccer games, Baseball practice, chores around the house (the grass isn't going to cut itself) and honey do lists I normaly only got to tune into part of the draft on a Saturday.
I would turn it on in the morning and then keep checking in throughout the day to see what was going on. Now it's no problem to sit back and enjoy the draft on a Thursday night. I'm usually looking for somethng good on TV anyway so thank you NFL for giving me something to watch on that Thursday every year. I'm very glad it was a success.
Also shortening the time between picks means there is less just sitting around waiting for your team to announce it's pick while on the clock. Not to mention the Browns have screwed enough drafts up with the old system. Maybe having an extra day between picks will help them make better decisions. One can only hope right?

I brought this exact point up to the main organizer of all NFL events, including the draft, on Saturday afternoon at our Q&A and he totally dismissed it. They had heard 1st round ratings were up about 25% and saw it as a great success. I mentioned the draft parties people were lamenting missing out on on the board and he said "we're aaware of concerns like that, but the numbers are pretty convincing."
The NFL doesn't care about viewership... they care about rating$.

I loved it, 1st round in 3 hours and then time to sit and look it all over. Having it all in one day Id be asleep by round 2 and miss the whole thing.
