Sources: Russell release imminent

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

The Oakland Raiders are preparing to release quarterback JaMarcus Russell but have to await the final word to release him from owner Al Davis, according to sources.

Russell

Russell is on the books for $9.45 million this season, including $3 million of guaranteed money. Since trading for former Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell on Saturday, the Raiders have studied Russell's contract and tried to figure out ways to release him to save the organization some money.

If he gets the $3 million (and sources expect that he will), Russell will have been paid $39 million since coming to the team as a first-round pick in 2007.

The Raiders have a minicamp Friday and it's very possible Russell could be released before then. If Davis doesn't give the go-ahead to release him before Friday, he might attend the minicamp, but the team might not let him practice, fearing that he would suffer an injury and leave the team liable for the $9.45 million in salary.

I'm betting I am not the only guy that is glad that Phil Savage isn't around anymore

Waaaaaaaaay bigger bust than Ryan Leaf. I don't care if people questioned him more than Leaf before the draft. The Raiders took him #1 overall and the dude was a disaster. Granted, Leaf's stats* look worse but the Raiders paid way more money for Russell.

Plus, Leaf had an emtional problem. Russell has an eating problem. Dang, I sure am glad Savage didn't get a crack at drafting Russell.

*Leaf's stats look worse since he missed his entire 2nd year. Both teams gave their guy 3 years before cutting them loose. Had Leaf not been injured, he'd have similar stats with Russell.

I'll admit that I shared Savage's high opinion of Russell when he came out ... he reminded me of Bradshaw. It just goes to show you, you just never know how these 1st round QB's are gonna turn out; the bust factor has to be in the 60-70% range.

Just a little infor for you on 1st round QB's

(reference site not allowed by dawgtalkers.net)

Using that,, from 1990 to 1999.. maybe 5 QB's lived up to, or mostly lived up to the hype. That's out of 21 who were chosen in the 1st round in the 90's.

Among those 5 are Daunte Culpepper and Trent Dilfer.. Dilfer got a SB ring but I doubt anyone would say he was the reason for the win. Culpepper had a decent career, but I am not sure it's worthy of saying he had a great career..

23.8% success rate.. not great if you ask me..

I don't have the time to look, but I"m sure if you look at rounds 2 to 7, you will find an even lesser percentage of success..

From 2000 to 2010:

(reference site not allowed by dawgtalkers.net)

It's safe to say that 10 QB's on that list have lived up to or are beginning to live up to the 1st round hype..

Two guys, Bradford and Tebow,, entirely to early to rate for obvious reasons,, and even the guys like Stafford and Sanchez,,while they performed well in thier rookie seasons, that doesn't prove they will be great.. yet anyway.'

So maybe out of 27 QB's drafted in the 1st round in the last decade.. 10 could be great... some already have done some good things.. Big Ben, Eli Manning, Rivers, Rodgers. The rest of the ones I felt were decent so far, haven't done anything to prove it, but haven't really busted yet either.

41.6% is a pretty big improvement... IF all 10 actually produce....

That would also say that 31.2% of first round QB's have either succeeded or at least had significant careers since 1990. (15 of 48 chosen)

If you wanna go strickly by the numbers and compare that to the dollars spent,, 31% success rate doesn't sound amazing.

Of course, throwing in the successes of Romo, Tom Brady and Brees kinda makes you wonder how significant where you were drafted really is..

I tried to get the sites I used to grab that names, but it wouldn't let me post them because those sites are not allowed.. One was Simon on sports and the other was a blog...

Doesn't matter however.. do a search and you'll get the names and can compare...

Somewhere, Tim Couch and David Carr are happy that there is no more debate on the biggest #1 pick bust ever.

Ok....that's an argument waiting to happen.

As bad as Tim was, I don't think he was a "bust". Rushed onto the field, no talent around him, different GM's, different coaches, different offensive systems, and he still managed to play like an average QB. Is an "average QB" good enough for the #1 overall.....heck no. But he wasn't a "bust".

I think the definition of a bust is.....a pick that not only doesn't live up to his draft spot but also turns out to be a guy that should never have been in the NFL at all. Couch deserved to be in the NFL, but should have been drafted in the 2nd round (or to a different team in the 1st round).

I think Tim Couch and David Carr are just happy they don't have to play behind expansion OL's anymore.

Couch and Carr both took horrendous beatings in their stints behind expansion OL's. I wouldn't actually call either a "bust" ... more like "in the wrong place at the wrong time". Russell wasn't exactly in an optimum situation in Oakland either, but I admit he did appear to blow when he played.

Regarding Russell, I wouldn't necessarily write him off totally. He could conceivably end up in the right situation, with the right coach, and reprise what appeared to be a very bright future - assuming he gets his eating behavior under control and gets in shape, he could be the next Doug Williams.

With a little coaching I think Russell could develop into an okay backup QB. Russell going to the Eagles is an interesting situation.

Tim Couch had a dead arm by the time he got to Cleveland....He was throwing the ball 400 a times a year at UK.

#2 Hal Mummee's offense did not prepare him for the NFL. The offense was "dumbed" down at UK cause Couch's lack of football IQ.

#3 As bad as the olines Couch had in front of him,Couch didn't help by not having pocket presence.
Lineman can only hold blocks for so long...Couch for all his atheletic traits had really bad feet in the pocket.

Tim Couch was a bust..he regressed after his 2nd yr. plain and simple

I think it will take a little more than coaching. He's got major motivational issues. You can't coach a guy who just doesn't care. Especially if he's already been paid.

Ryan Leaf:
Pass attempts 655
Pass completions 317
Percentage 48.4
TD-INT 14-36
Passing yards 3,666
QB Rating 50.0

Jamarcus Russell:
Pass attempts 680
Pass completions 354
Percentage 52.1
TD-INT 18-23
Passing yards 4,083
QB Rating 65.2

So Russell was a tad better, with pretty much the same number of attempts. Then again, Russell went #1 so he should of been better.

I agree.

Also, I wouldn't be wholly surprised if Russell just retired at this point. Why take the abuse both physically and mentally being ripped to shreds for just a couple extra million when you already have tens of millions in the bank.

the only answers I can think of is that you cannot stand others to think of you as a draft bust and want to prove them wrong or you just don't know what else to do with your life.

39 million for 354 completions, thats 110,169 per completion.

or

18 touchdowns, thats 2,166,666 per touchdown.

and they aren't even going to get a ham sandwich for him...

Thank goodness for JR. He makes by far the best argument to date for a rookie pay scale.

Yeah,, he's like the poster child of why a rookie pay plan is needed in this league.

I mean I know you have guys like Payton Manning that you pay the huge bucks too,,, and they are worth it.. but for every Payton Manning there is at least 2 or 3 JR's...

I completely agree. I was just throwing this out there for fun

It seems like when the "talking heads" metion the biggest #1 busts, Couch's name is thrown out there. Unfairly, I believe. Heck, he at least led the team to it's only playoff appearance (with token KH help). That's more than anyone can say about Carr.

Russell just set a new low for #1 picks. Worthless....just worthless. He'll be the poster child for the Owners at the CBA table regarding rookie pay scales.

Maybe it wasn't so imminent after all....

Russell expected to be at Raiders minicamp
LINK

Today - 4:10 PM ET

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, JaMarcus Russell is expected to attend the Raiders' upcoming minicamp.

Part of the thinking behind Jason Campbell's acquisition is reportedly that he'd "mentor" Russell, who's exhibited awful decision making and work ethic throughout his three-year career. Campbell draws high marks in both areas. Schefter says the Raiders haven't ruled out trying to "salvage" the former No. 1 overall pick. It's unclear if Russell will participate in drills.

The football sense says not to practice him because he might get hurt....but when it comes to Al Davis......he might keep him 5 more years while on the bench.

I think everyone but Al Davis, Phil Savage, and apparently you, were pretty confident that Jamarcus Russel was a bust waiting to happen. Nobody I know thought he was going to make it.

I have to wonder, did he just decide one day that he already made $40 million, he could just eat pizza and play video games all day every day for the rest of his life? Kind of tempting actually...

jc Are there actually any pics of a 300lb Jamarcus? I couldn't find anything but references to Schefter's report. I tried to google "Fat Jamarcus" but didn't get any pics. I did find a report that he had a disorder called "lethargy addiction".

Wasn't he like 270 when he came into the league? Sure, he's a professional athelete and should be able to maintain his weight, but it's not like this is a guy that used to be 225. Wasn't that backup Giants QB 300#? And I don't think he was 6'6" like Russell.

I'm certainly not a Russell apologist, I was thrilled he was gone so we could take Thomas or Peterson, but I think a bigger deal is being made of this 300 thing than is warranted.
