Wasn't he like 270 when he came into the league? Sure, he's a professional athelete and should be able to maintain his weight, but it's not like this is a guy that used to be 225. Wasn't that backup Giants QB 300#? And I don't think he was 6'6" like Russell.
I'm certainly not a Russell apologist, I was thrilled he was gone so we could take Thomas or Peterson, but I think a bigger deal is being made of this 300 thing than is warranted.
Convert him to TE. He very mobile and actually pretty quick for a guy his size. Would make a rediculous mismatch situation. The transition from QB to WR/TE is certainly not unheard of. I don't know if that's ever happened within the NFL. It's usually from college then transition into the pros.

Wasn't he starting at the end of last season. Looks like wonderlic does mean something if he shows up at camp weighing 300#. That can't be the best decision.

And this is one of the reasons I agree with Rookies not getting big contracts. They get them and if they suck,Oh Well, they got their money and are set for life if they don't waste it.They should have to prove they can play at the pro level before they get the cash.

I've often wondered if maybe they get the dough,, get lazy and forget what got them to this point in the first place? Obviously,, not all high picks have that attitude..but you gotta wonder if guys like Russell just got lazy.. Just wondering.

Well yeah,, I would too if the 40 mill was like a lottery or something,, But that's different than being paid to do a job then taking the money and getting lazy..
It's one thing to just not be able to compete,, it's another to just get the money and mentally quit.. Not sure if that's the case with Russell.. just sayin

Maybe he is just not that good?
Also, sometimes people stop trying or trying as hard when they are unsuccessful.

Absolutly,, he just may not be that good and certainly, when you get down on yourself, the self esteem thing has to come into play..
In fact, I'm sure you have noticed that a player starts out on one team,, doesn't light it up and goes to anothe team and is productive..
Maybe it's the way the second team handled the kid,, built him up emotionally first then built him up physically.., I've wondered about that., I'd say there is a bunch to it..

You know I'd bring him in... Id put him on the practice squad, see if he loses the weight and see if his attitude changes, MH is a QB guru and a guy like him can maybe pull something out of him. We all have to remember he was being taught by the Raiders!

Ahh,, I don't think I want him here..
If for no other reason than he let himself go. He's put on a ton of weight.. If nothing else, he should have been working hard to stay in shape, and it doesn't appear he has.. Sounds like a bunch of personal motivational issues that I don't think we have time for..

at the moment, MH is not the coach. In the scheme of things.. he supposedly took the place of Randy.. not Savage or Manginni.. So QB guru or not, MH is a little out of place in the argument. He may tell Manginni how to do it, but being two levels removed from the field, I do not think that MH being a QB guru comes into play...

Work ethic is part of it too. It just seemed like he didn't want to put in the work needed to get better. Like he felt all he had to do is show up on game day.
How many more times are we going to see this, before there is some kind of rookie cap so players have to actually work for their money.

There is no way the Browns will have any interest in Russell. Too many issues with him.

There is no need for a underachieving, lazy headcase like Jawalrus Russel on the Cleveland Browns.

My favorite thus far has been JaLardass Ruffles, personally. But that may be too much. Moral of the story? Don't make a guy your franchise QB because you lost your load watching him throw on one knee. There's a bit more to it than arm strength.

I don't know if a rookie salary cap would cure this problem. Some players will just give up once they get paid. And that would happen in their rookie year, if they got paid enough, or after their next big contract. Some people just quit. And there's no way to really predict it.
I used to be a big proponent on a strict rookie salary cap. I figured the vets would want that money instead of it going to the rooks. But they don't. The vets like the current system. Why? Each time a new set of top 10 picks come in, it drives up the average price at each of those positions. Therefore, if that specific vet is up for a new contract, he's getting a bigger payday because Suh just got the biggest DT deal in the history of the NFL.
Yes, with a cap in place, it doesn't mean the current team that Vet Player X is on can afford him taking in Suh's new deal....but some team will have the space. And that's all that matters. It doesn't guarantee all vets a bump in salary persey, just the ones that are in their prime and without a contract.
So, if a rookie salary cap was created.....the players see that as the owners erasing one of the two factors in how contracts prices go up per position. Good for owners and penny-pinching fans but not good for players.
The players would need to collectively bargin a way to institute a rookie salary cap while also figuring a way to switch a portion that saved money into a veteran salary pool. The owners would be lowering their overall spend on players, but some of that money will have to be guaranteed to the vets for the players to sign off on the deal. Maybe I didn't explain my point right....but the vets will never accept a rookie salary cap without a guarantee that it won't keep player contracts from growing.
And yes, "Jawalrus Russel" is great. I always like "Jabustus Russel". "Jawalrus" is better.

he was released. Quote:
Nearly two weeks after the Raiders acquired quarterback Jason Campbell and nearly a week after quarterback JaMarcus Russell reported for and participated in a mandatory minicamp, the Raiders have cut ties with the first overall pick in the 2007 draft.
The Raiders will save $6.45 million in 2010 base salary. They owe him $3 million in guaranteed base salary.
The team's decision to allow him to participate in the minicamp is curious, especially in light of the decision to release him so quickly thereafter. If he had suffered a torn ACL or some other curious injury, the Raiders would have owed him the full $9.45 million.
That said, it's possible that the Raiders purchased insurance to cover the $6.45 million in extra money that would have been paid to Russell if he had suffered a season-ending injury during the minicamp. With no salary cap to worry about, this became a matter of raw dollars, and insurance of this nature is readily available both for the players (who buy it from folks like our pal Rich "Big Daddy" Salgado of Coastal Advisors) and for the teams.

raiders are really lucky the cba is where it is to be able to unload this guy instead of carrying his salary.

This is one of those situations that kind of make me laugh in the NFL. If Russel was a 5th round pick with the same kind of history he would probably be out of the league. The fact he was a 1st overall someone will give him another shot. Whether he deserves it or not.

Why? Did someone cut a QB?

Not a very good one, that's for sure.
I think if you believe in fate, and that all things are somehow cyclical, then it only stands to reason that the Eagles will end up with Russell...............

I wonder if Jamarcus just won't retire. He's got his money in the bank, and really doesn't care about his career. Why go through all the grueling training camp practices when his heart isn't in it anymore?

$ $ $
He got someone to hand over a fat chunk of cash once, why not try it again?
League minimum is still several hundred thousand dollars... that's a fair bit of motivation to go do nothing on someone else's couch.

People should have seen this issues when he showed up to the combine with a Dunlop tire around his waist. Thats a hillbilly term " it dun lopped over your belt"
For me anyways that set off major red flags that have shown themselves to be true over time.

Yep, no doubt, someone out there will give him 10-12 million just on the off chance that he turns it around.

I think we should sign him for a vet minimum deal and then trade him to the Raiders for a 3rd rounder in next year's draft.
