WOW, I just heard this audio on Sportscenter... https://www.dawgtalkers.net/newpost.php?Cat=0&Board=GeneralDiscussion&page=0Former Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway said on a radio show Wednesday afternoon that he would not want a gay player on his team. "You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known," Hardaway said. "I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States." Hardaway was a guest of Miami Herald columnist Dan Le Betard on the Miami radio show Sports Talk 790 and was asked how he would deal with a gay teammate. When asked if he would accept an active player's coming out, such as that of retired NBA center John Amaechi, Hardaway replied: "First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team. "And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that's right. And you know I don't think he should be in the locker room while we're in the locker room. I wouldn't even be a part of that." Hardaway later apologized for the remarks during a live telephone interview with W-S-V-N Channel 7, saying he was sorry and should have never said anything. "Yes, I regret it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that," he said. "That was my mistake." Hardaway, who was in Las Vegas Tuesday at a pre-All Star Game NBA Cares outreach event, was both a coach and player for the ABA's Florida Pit Bulls in 2006. Hardaway played for five NBA teams from 1990-2003 and was a five-time All-Star. He finished with averages of 17.7 points and 8.2 assists.

Wow. How open minded. I wouldn't be surprised if one of his teammates actually turned out to be gay. I don't see why it matters to anyone what your teammate's sexuality is.

That is repulsive. I can't believe that this is 2007 and the world still has people who have this attitude. I hope he enjoys living in his happy little box with no gay people in it.

Not sure if you just read the article or listened to the audio, but the audio sounds worse for some reason. Just to hear the words actually come out of his mouth, I was about to go to sleep when I heard it and was shocked, couldnt believe it.

Sometimes when heterosexual men are so afraid to be around gay men, it means that they're confused about their own sexuality.

Good point, Christy. I think that's true in a lot of other cases, too. Often, the guys who are the most racist secretly have african-american lovers (i.e. Strom Thurmond), and the people that are the most religious zealots often have some real nasty skeletons in their closet (i.e. that preacher out west who spoke out against gays, and then it was discovered that he had a gay lover and was doing crystal meth with him).
It's just like in the book 1984. You always have to keep an eye on the ones who yell the loudest.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

On a funnier kind of related note. I read in The "Beat" which is our office newpaper but in email form. I noticed that the GTLB meeting had free Pizza. Borders has something like 50% gay workforce here at the home office. So me being me, would rather eat free pizza than pay for lunch. so I went.... It was so awkward, even though I knew what it was going in, it still was. When I told them that other people had come down with me but were too chicken to attend the meeting they were . I learned a lot about gay benefits and rights and what not. Borders apparently turned down the re-assignment surgery option so we are 95% gay freidly (I dont knwo the actual name of the rating) where we were 100% before declinging the re-assignment surgery. Motor City pride week I had never heard of. GTLB recruiting, GTLB adoption rights, GTLBauthor events, GTLB everything...it was wild.....I had no idea how serious they were. Since I had to say something and not just eat all there pizza(what I wanted to do ) I suggested "Allie" Stickers voluntarily people could put them outside their cubes. anywho it was quite eye opening.

My point of view is very different than his. I disagree with what he said and the message he spoke.
But I would also be the first in line to stand up for his right to say it.

The man can say anything he wants to . If that is how he really feels why should he lie ? Personally the whole gay issue is a nonevent for me . Whatever you do with your personal life is of no concern to me. I hope is he ready for the attention that his little rant will give him . The guy plays with a ball for a living , why should anyone give a ratt's ass what this moron thinks ?

While I disagree with what he said, there's one part that made me think just a bit and I haven't formed an opinion on it yet.
When he started talking about the locker room and how everyone changes in there. Sure if he never did anything inappropriate before coming out, he wouldn't do anything inappropriate after.
But at the same time, it's kind of like changing in front of a woman. Whether they're looking or care or not is irrelevant, it's kind of uncomfortable.
I hope that doesn't get taken out of context cuz I tried to put that as tastefully as I could. Like I said I think what he said was despicable, just one part made me think because I've been in a locker room environment before.

So, every time you go to a female doctor, you think she wants to jump your bones?
Your proposed solution to this, then, would be to have only males go to male doctors....except, of course, if the male doctor is gay?
C'mon, get with it. These people are professionals. I think they can separate their sexual activity from their daily jobs, just like most of us do on a daily basis when we work with members of the opposite sex. It's not like the guy is walking around in the locker room grabbing everyone and leering suggestively in the showers. He's doing his job.
If someone like Hardaway (love that name in this context) is "uncomfortable", changing in front of grown naked men, perhaps he's the one who shouldn't have been a basketball player.
The day we start to seperate one 'kind' of people from another 'kind', based strictly on the way we think these *other* people are thinking about us, we have more problems to worry about than the minute possibility of unwanted sexual thoughts.
**Insert clever signature here attributed to some historical figure that sounds interesting but has been taken completely out of context.

Okay, time to play devil's advocate here ... Hardaway's comments are stupid, but I keep hearing this point thrown out about, "who cares if it's the locker room?" and think to myself, "Well if that's the case, then why do we still seperate mens' and womens' locker rooms/bathrooms etc?

At least Hardaway speaks his mind about stuff. What he said may be considered in poor judgement in todays world, but at least he didn't let political correctness censor his thoughts.

I agree with that Pit. While I don't agree with what he said, I must admit, it is quite refreshing to hear someone speak openly and freely on the subject. I know allot, and I mean allot of folks that share his feelings, but won't say it publicly because of the backlash. I am pretty liberal when it comes to folks doing whatever they want, and that includes being a sodomite. The good Lord will judge their sins, as well as my own which I have enough banked up to worry about. Difficult subject, and I know a few people who are good hearted people who are gay, and knowing them, has eliminated the fear of being converted. I will admit I was a real ass, and homophobic when I was a young man. I gained nothing from the hate, and those that came out around me in the early 90's caused me to understand they weren't interested at all in converting me.

The guy was up front about how he feels . You don't like it ( understandable ) , but why should he be chastised for this ??? Quit frankly , I'm surprised anyone has the nads to speak up. I'm tired of the whole dam gay thing ( along with a bunch of other ) myself . Your personal life is yours .. I could care less . Why can't you speak your mind in the States any more ???

Excuse me, he did speak his mind. It's not like he's getting thrown in jail or something. You have EVERY right to say anything you want in this country and people in turn have EVERY right to say what they want about what you said.
See how that works?

Whats ididotic is sticking microphones in these people faces and badgering to talk and asking them how they feel and berating them if they dont but if they say something that is Un P.C. all of a sudden they are scum of the earth.
I dont agree with his assesment and hate of gays but he has the right to not like gays if he wants. If the media doesnt like how he feels(or any well known people) on a subject maybe they shouldnt always ask ..

I agree with you. I thought his exercising his freedom and speaking his mind is refreshing and very uncommon. He will have a harder time, finding employment in the media sector, and that is why he recanted his earlier statement IMO. That is also why many, many folks keep their thoughts on the subject to themselves.

Has nothing to do with whether or not the media likes or doesn't like what he said, the media is only concerned with generating sales and/or viewership from it.....
And you know darn well the media was going to ask this question of every current and former NBA player until they could find one who would make a comment like this..... Two things I can pretty much guarantee you, one gay basketball player came out, there are others... one anti-gay basketball player spoke up, there are others.... great, so we've established those two things....

Would you be saying the same thing if a white athlete said he hates black people and is proud of it? Same thing, right? They are just speaking their mind about people who are different than themselves.

So, based on this statement, you think seperate restrooms/changing rooms for men and women are unnecessary? As long as everyone is keeping their hands to themselves and acting professional, what is wrong with that - assuming what goes on in our heads is off limits?

LOL.. you know what gets me Jules? People don't seem to really get it.
When did Tim Hardaway retire? Answer: He hasn't played in the NBA since 2003.
What is Hardaway doing now? Answer: He's the former coach of a failed ABA team and co-owner of a hand carwash.
Why exactly was he on a sports radio show? Answer: To discuss his carwash business? uh, no. Because they had to KNOW HE WOULD SAY SOMETHING STUPID.... That is the only LOGICAL reason I can come up with why anybody would CARE what Tim Hardaway thinks of this.... Because they were aware of his anti-gay feelings and sought him out to get the exact type of quotes they got....

If you really don't like gay people than just say so. You say your not homophobic yet you continue to make comments that make me believe you are. Like you said, God will be the judge. I don't think he needs any help from us when it comes to judging people.

I dont know if that is true or not, but Hardway is a former NBA player doing work for the NBA during All-Star weekend. And its not like Hardway was a stiff, he was an All-Star. No matter who the shows producer was able to get for an interview, the same question would have been brought up.
