5. The coaches obviously were unhappy with the tackling in the secondary, which is why they also drafted Nebraska safety Larry Asante. He is much the same as Ward, a safety who played close to the line and defended against the run. As John Mayor emailed: "It seems the Browns have three safeties [Abe Elam/Ward/Asante] who are considered in-the-box safeties. Having safeties that come up and support on the run is great, but I would think they also need a safety that can cover." Mayor raises a good point, which makes me think Michael Adams or even newcomer Sheldon Brown will see some time at safety -- or at least covering slot receivers.
Just because Ward was used "in the box" @ Oregon, doesn't make him an "in the box" Safety. The Browns would have never had him rated their #2 Safety or taken him with pick #38. Yes he is good in the box in run support, but make know mistakes about it my friends. Ward was Selected, because we feel he can be a deep Safety and can be used to cover a receiver one on one if the defense requirers the FS to match up to a receiver. Elam who is yet to sign is an "in the box" Safety and is out of position out of it.
Adams may start at RS (FS), but Ward is expected to be the future there. He has simular size and abilities as Troy Polamalu.
Mangenius has already stated S Brown will not be moving to Safety.

Interesting...U have a lot of knowledge about DB's...I've seen Ward and yes Oregon did use him in the box . He played CB before ,so he's familar with coverage responsibilities..to add what U said,I believe the thinking is ,the secondary and no one who could wrap up and punish people. Your SS should be that person but he wasn't.. Ward will be used to cover people and free-lance a bit at FS..use that hitting to help run support.. Mangini's D is similar to Rac's Bellyaches..the DB's are interchangable..

Everyone needs to keep in mind also that Ryan loves to blitz his defensive backs. I think we are going to see a lot more of the 46 this year.

That would be shweet!
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I enjoyed your point of view judge and agree with your slant. the "in the box safeties assante/ward may push Elam back to where he belongs: the Bench and the "coverage safety" may be where Brown or Haden cover the slot wr. AS for Pluto, I think he has been the longesttenured and the best Browns beat writer for some time: he offers analysis without the home team rah rah or vinegar.
