Tight end Alex Smith heads to Cleveland
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 3, 2010 7:51 PM ET
Free agent tight end Alex Smith is heading to Cleveland.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Smith signed a one-year deal with the Browns today.

Smith was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 71st pick in the 2005 NFL draft -- 70 spots after another Alex Smith was taken by the San Francisco 49ers. He became a starter as a rookie and caught 41 passes.

But in four seasons since then Smith hasn't matched his rookie reception total. In 2009 the Bucs traded him to the Patriots, and the Patriots released him before the start of the regular season. He then was signed by the Eagles but caught just three passes.

Must of thought we still needed TE help

Go Browns!!

I remember the big rookie season he had. It'd be great if he works out.

Sounds like we're just hoping to find a diamond. Worst case is that he's a camp body that doesn't make the team and he won't cost us anything.

I agree, but it makes me wonder who he's challenging for a spot. Evan Moore? Definitely not Watson. Is Smith a good enough runblocker to take Robert Royal's spot? I don't know that much about the guy

He is challenging for a spot on the roster, period, just like the other backups at the position. I would guess that Watson is close to being a "lock" ... but no one else is. Moore is intriguing ..... but still has minimal experience and production. Royal is inconsistent with his hands. I don't see either guy as a lock. Personnel guys add players so that the coaches can sort them out. The better pool to select from, the better the end result should be.

I believe that Royal may be looking over his shoulder.

If we keep 3 TEs then he is challenging every other TE in camp to be one of the top 3... isn't that how it works?

I'm thinking if Royal is looking over his shoulder it's going to be for a big run blocker. No other way. Evan Moore isn't that great of a run blocker. Watson is decent but not a great runblocker either.

While he drops passes, Royal has a role on this team that requires a player like him. While he isn't the biggest, he's a good blocker. I'm not sure how affordable he is, but I don't think Royal is as bad as he played last season, and if we're going to replace him, it should be with a guy who can runblock.

That's why I asked before, Can Alex Smith runblock? IMO we need a TE that can do this for the team no matter what. We will want to match Watson with another blocking TE on some plays. Especially since passing prob won't be a strength.

If you have a TE that poses virtually no threat in the passing game then why replace him with another TE that poses virtually no threat in the passing game? Get a few TEs that can catch and instead of putting in a blocking TE on obvious run plays, put an OLman in that spot and run the freakin' ball.

hmmmm, i remember him having a huge rookie season, but the only thing i remember was when he got completely destroyed by a Browns player, maybe Pool? maybe Russell? I dont remember who it was but Alex Smith got laid out by someone.

Thats my clearest memory of him, and idk who hit him

See, I dunno. May be I'm the only one, but I think Royal is better than he played last year in the catching game. I dunno, I just don't see Royal losing his job unless some TE on this team really improves their blocking. It's easy to say, put another O-Linemen in, but who is gonna do it? Hank Fraley is gone. I just don't think it's as easy as throwing in another tackle. That limits you on what you can do. I'm standing by my statement that Royal will not be replaced by Alex Smith unless he is a competent blocker.

Not sure if I have him confused with someone else but there was a TE/WR drafted right around that time. Maybe we look at him as a big possession receiver? If I am thinking of the right guy. It was a few years ago.

I tend to agree with this statement. Royal had some decent, not great, seasons before coming here. Then he got the dropsies.

But let's not fool ourselves.........

All of the TEs on our team are journeymen types. I don't believe that any of them have a lock on a position or a guarantee to make the final cut. There is prolly not too much separation between who will be the starter and the #3. Who makes the final roster may depend on who is the better ST player. Long snapper anyone?

Pretty sure he had the dropsies at Buffalo as well. I distinctly remember Bills fans coming on here and mentioning this after we acquired him.

that is correct Ytse, he did have the dropsies in Buffalo. I remember the same posts and I know Bills fans that were glad he was moved even though they didn't have a name replacement. just a rookie.

This cannot be accidental; it is raining tight ends! Can't swing a cat in Berea without hitting two tighties!
Is Royal signed? This might be the Word from on High. I suggest that we may looking at our system to "manufacture" a success. We must be planning much heavier use of tights as receivers; blocking isn't an all that priority IMO, but I admit that I am not overly familiar with them. I wish him good luck and a safe career.

An accident it cannot be, for a tightie we trust is in need! Strong and big with hands like pillows, big and strong like a willow...

Also, didn't Royal have a broken finger in a cast last year?

Just clicking

Couldn't picking this guy up mean nothing more than he's here to compete and may the best man/men win kinda thing?

We have one TE who has had some success at the NFL level. The other 3 are ???s. So yeah I would say your looking at those 3 guys competing for the 1 or 2 roster spots.

I actually do like Smith though, and wouldn't mind seeing him and Watson sticking.

Since the return we have had 2 types of quarterbacks in Cleveland..

1. Those who suck

and

2. Those who could have been good if given a chance in a better position with better talent.

As for which QBs fit into which category.. who really gives a crap. The only 3 QBs I care about at the moment are Delhomme, Wallace, and McCoy.... and for the record, Delhomme is good but erratic and over the hill, Wallace is a career back-up, and McCoy on opening day will walk across Lake Erie, stopping to point out where the fish are, feed the stadium with 2 fish and 3 loaves of bread, then win 90% of his games as a Brown over the next 12 years.... if they get him some talent around him and give him a chance.

But that's just my opinion.
