just curious, for giggles, say Mike Brown was fired, and lebron resigned. Who do you got to replace him? Cal? Fratello? Silas(lol, had too), Mike K? who?
Phil Jackson, anyone? He loves to inherit the best players and put them over the top. But I actually don't think this roster would entice him too much outside of LBJ.
Van Gundy? I'd take him before any of the names you mentioned.

Next to LeBron leaving, Calipari would be a good reason not to watch the NBA anymore.

Where is Shaq ?
Putting up 17 points in 27 minutes.
I agree with just about all of the analysis here. Not too much more to add. I figured it'd come back to Cleveland tied at 2. Good news is that Boston has to take another one from us on our home court to win it, and thats real tough to do.
And LeBron had how many ? 22,...Meaningless.
I don't care about just "points." Basketball is a two-way street. We need the defense. LeBron should be forcing the issue, ala Three. Make THEM play defense, if we're not going to.
This series should already be over,...at a minimum, 3-1. And the way Boston has out-hustled the Cavs, it could easily be 3-1 Celtics.
Anyhow,...2 more at home, but Five is a must win.
That's all well and good about Lebron, but you asked where Shaq was, and I told you. 17 points. 5 boards. 2 blocks. And he got a couple of their bigs in early foul trouble.
Hilarious that you think we should've swept Boston, which is the only thing you could've meant when you say this series should be over and only four games have been played. Boston is still a top-5 NBA team, with a top-5 PG and some savvy vet players. Or are you buying into the "Boston is old and tired and no good anymore" bit that got tossed around this season?

I would try to go after Pat Riley, if Wade leaves Miami. I know Riley said he wants to coach again. We need a guy like that. I still think we win this series. Not so sure about Orlando.

Just clicking...
I'm real fed up with the slow tempo on offense. We have some of the better open-floor players at their positions in the league (Lebron's flawless in space) and when the tempo is fast and we're actually running the floor we get more high percentage looks. Defense and better rebounding helps fuel that, too. Again, the damn free throws in the fourth quarter pissed me off. It's simple muscle memory and not crapping your pants to make free throws. I play just 3 times a week and can shoot 80% free throws. Act like professionals. No excuse for that aside from lack of focus or gonads. Everyone else is spot on with the other obvious things like our atrocious D in this game and not making the looks we needed to. That being said we still were in position late on the road and not playing our best. I still like our chances but there needs to be urgency and follow through.
Brown should damn well be in trouble if Lebron asked for Shaq and he said no...

I thought it was a waste of a pretty good effort by Shaq personally.

yeah you gotta have him in there down the stretch, everyone was suprised he wasn't in, even celtics mentioned in it in their post games, Things like this that make Brown look foolish, its not a hard decision to let shaq play until he gets his 6 foul, One thing about shaq, he usually gets his money's worth out of his fouls. Basically Brown conceded the loss, maybe not in the literal sense, but by not using all your weapons to the fullest extent. I mean between AV/Shaq, i know who i rather have at the end of games..(hint, he knows he can't make a 18 ft jumper, so he don't even roam there..lol)

Yeah i thought about him, he's def. a no-nonsense coach, and he's dealt with superstar ego's before. And to oohrah, yeah i don't want Cal either, i was just throwing names out for convo, just curious who everyone thinks of when they think of a new coach. I have to believe that if lebron stays, this would be a dream coaching job, a great fanbase, the best player on the planet, and owner who don't meddle and spends as much as needed. I'd say this is a pretty good destination. I really believe if Phil Jackson had taken over instead of Mike Brown we'd probably have a ring by now, because I think there would have been even more pressure on FO to do something sooner. What Gund/paxson did to this team was unforgivable, ferry/gilbert have done a great job getting us in a good position. i still shudder when i remember jiri welsch for a 1st round pick, and i remember trying to reason with myself why that didn't seem so bad when clearly, it was.

Cal is not going anywhere until at least after the 2011-2012 season. And I hope we don't wait that long to get rid of Brown

NRTU... y'all crack me up. The Indians are perenially awful and everybody wants a new ownership. The Browns are traditionally awful and everybody wants a new coach, a new GM, new coordinators every year. The Cavs have been to the playoffs 5 years in a row, the eastern conference finals a couple times, the finals a couple years ago, they've led the league in wins two years in a row... and people want a new coach.

first off, good thoughts.
the rest of this is J/C
i agree with most everything in here.
1. Shaq had a very good game. 2. Our defensive effort was lax (actually it was good on the frontside of the play, but the backside defenders were extermely lazy in getting back and Boston exploited it) 3. Parker had a good day shooting the ball, but if he can't box-out Rondo at all, then someone else needs to cover him. There were at least 5 times by my count that he let Rondo get a rebound he could have easily had. If that means more Moon, then so be it. 4. Mo did not have a good game at all. Where is good-Mo? 5. How many careless TO's do we have to make in a game? I know the refs were letting both sides play and those fouls attributed to some of the TO's, but many were still careless plays or trying to fit the pass through 3 defenders. Inexcusable. 6. Kudos to Jamison. He adjusted to the C's rotating high on him by taking it to the rack.
Last point: Boston showed us how we used to play earlier in the year on offense. LeBron (or someone else, but usually LeBron) drives to the hoop drawing 2-3 defenders. Then, someone cuts on the backside and easy lay-up or dunk for them. Why don't we do this more often instead of just watching? At worst, it forces one of the 3pt defenders to defend the cutter and opens up the shooter even more.
All that said, we did what we had to do in Boston. We split and got homecourt back. Now, we need to defend that homecourt.

Anyone remember when the Indians couldn't win the big game and decided that they needed to get rid of Grover to shake things up?

i know people are ripping mo, and he hasn't done a lot outside of a few spots, but does anyone notice that no plays are really being set up for him? where's the catch and shoot from the corner? i saw it once, that's a good spot for mo. he's not getting great looks at the basket. and he is the pg and i understand that, but i just don't think he's being set up properly.
we're not setting ourselves up with good shots. part of that is turning the ball over, and part of it was that the cavs were unbelievably agressive until the 4th quarter.

I like Mo. I appreciate what he does for this team when he is playing well. He was a HUGE reason we won the first game (when he came out like a bandit in the 3rd quarter).
However, he is much like DA for the Browns in that there is good-Mo and there is bad-Mo. When bad-Mo shows up, he doesn't have confidence in his shot, he turns the ball over and he doesn't even seem to be trying on defense. It can be all or nothing with him sometimes. I still think he's a '+' overall for our team, but we need good-Mo to show up more consistently.

yep, that was about a decade after the Browns got rid of Marty for the same reason... and boy haven't both of those situations worked well since we decided to upgrade something that wasn't broken.

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but do you fire the coach? Could the Magic and the Lakers not say the same thing? Do you think Van Gundy and Phils jobs are in jeopardy? Are their fans discussing their replacements right now in the middle of the conference semifinals?

The biggest problem I see on offense is Lebron, not Lebron as a player, but the lebron offense, whoever is at PG always defers to lebron with the ball, lebron pounds it for 85% of the shot clock and then takes a shot. Sometimes it goes in, sometimes it don't. This falls on coaching, tell lebron, work in the offense, don't be the offense. Lebron would be so much better working without the ball. The other thing is Jamison, He's really the guy we need to start running plays for, he gets all his points off stuff he does on his own, sure he gets a few looks, but i think when boston is playing to stop lebron, they need to have some sets to get Jamison/parker/Mo some looks because they usually play on the weakside.

This has been my biggest complaint forever.. the offense tends to get stagnant with LeBron holding the ball and 4 people watching him wondering what he is going to do next... and as you say, sometimes he beats the guy to the basket, sometimes he drains the jumper, but it gets other people standing around, which is never a good thing.

Watching the Cavs I see a team that still doesn't know what it's good at offensively. I've seen some good things from various players at different times, but there doesn't seem to be any specific play that they want to run.
It's just LBJ at the top of the key, looking to play 1 on 5, way too often. He can run the offense, nothing wrong with that, but should be running some sets that become staples. I personally feel that LBJ should be setting picks for Mo and Jamison to change things up a bit.
Cleveland will be better off hopefully after this long series, those guys need to figure out who they are.

I disagree with the assertion that no ring this year = failure (although I do think this is the best chance that a Cleveland team has had to win a chip since that one thing happened about 13 years ago).
Obviously, Phil Jackson's job isn't in jeopardy. He's one year removed from his tenth ring and looking at probably his third consecutive Finals appearance.
I think that if SVG comes up short this year and again next year that he might certainly be on the hot seat. He's basically about two years behind Mike Brown at this point...several consecutive strong showings in the early playoff rounds and a poor Finals showing (I would argue that the Spurs team that swept us in 07 was a better team than the 09 Lakers). SVG also has the distinction of not being able to get the job done with DWade, Shaq, and best record in the East, and then resigning from a team that ultimately went on to win it all.
I don't think any Orlando fans are calling for SVG's head any time soon, though, because they all seem convinced that he and Dwight Howard are the second coming.
I also understand that your question was rhetorical in nature.

i do think that a non-championship this year is a failure.
1. we don't know 100% that LBJ is back, though it is likely. 2. we don't know what the other championship contenders are going to do this offseason. 3. we don't know what other teams might make themselves contenders this offseason.
For #2, if the Lakers do get the discussed Bosh for Bynum deal with Toronto, that improves them significantly (don't know why Raptors would want oft-injured Bynum and his contract though). That is just one example in what could alter the landscape of the contenders though.
For #3, if the Bulls get Wade, that would instantly make them a competitive team. Another couple minor pieces (they'd likely lose a couple to get Wade), and they are right there.
Yes, we might improve and remain at or near the top, but the fact is that noone really knows and we need to get this championship in the bag while we have the chance. That's what makes this a championship or bust year.

Add up all of the points and this is what you get... when you are good enough to win more games than any other team during the regular season, you have to understand that isn't going to last forever and you have a limited window to win championships... so every year that you do that or are close to doing that and do NOT win a championship, the season is a failure.

If brown doesn't get us to the finals and be competitve against suns/lakers, he will likely be fired. How can you bring him back confident he could get us a championship?? The roster for us looks set in stone. We've wheeled and dealed the past 3 seasons. It's on MIke now to get us past an inferior Boston team, and an Orlando team that we have designed our roster for this past year.

I'd have to agree. This roster is it's constructed to win NOW.
While there's a decent core of guys: Mo, Delonte, Andy, JJ....the main contributors are either aging and on their last legs: AP, Shaq, Antawn or in limbo with free agency: LBJ.
There's a possibility we lose both Z and Shaq in the off-season, leaving us insanely thin down low. Sure we'll have Powe hopefully at full strength but with no long term prospects at the center position, the team needs to somehow get lucky in the pivot.
If the Cavs don't win this year, it's going to be tough (barring another big trade) to be a title favorite in the near future. The other elite teams are in much better shape in terms of future success. They're younger and more talented in the post and they have other guys who consistently perform well alongside their superstar.
If Antawn was 26 and not 34 it would probably be a different story but without that legitimate second option (moving forward), the Cavs are probably going to struggle against the upper echelon teams. If LBJ sticks around they'll always be competitive but the salary cap is going to continually strap this team.
There are certainly opportunities to grab aging vets for pennies on the dollar but ultimately the Cavs may be haunted by the prospect of the team being just competitive enough to stunt it's ceiling. Unless they get really lucky, they may never be able to add another star player alongside LBJ. The Cavs never pick high enough in the draft to land a young future star and they never have enough free agent resources ($$$) to sign anyone above the MLE. The draft thing hurts two-fold when you consider the team not only has few young potential stars but it also lacks trade chips because of its' failures in the draft.
Not trying to rant, it's just the reality of the situation. I'm still very optimistic about this playoff run but the team should certainly be playing with a little more urgency. With all that's at stake, I'm shocked they have been flat in 10 of the 16 quarters that have been played. Boston is too good a team to tray and sleepwalk through.

Lebron asks for Rondo
WALTHAM, Mass. -- The day after his 29-point, 18-rebound, 13-assist effort, Rajon Rondo remained the center of attention at the Boston Celtics' practice on Monday. But the focus had shifted slightly from his triple-double in Game 4 to whether he can have as much of an impact in Game 5 if the Cleveland Cavaliers employ LeBron James to defend him. Following Sunday's game, James said he wanted a shot at defending Rondo.
"I would love to,'' James said. "It's something we maybe should explore because Rondo is definitely dominating this series at the point guard position. For me, I don't have a problem taking Rondo or guarding Rondo throughout the course of the game. If the coaching staff or the guys want me to do it, I will."
Rondo and the Celtics seemed unconcerned with the situation.
"It really doesn't matter about the matchup," said Rondo. "Obviously, it's the playoffs and the big thing is matchups, but, to me, I don't really care who's guarding me. I gotta run the offense and in our system. If we get easy looks in transition, it doesn't matter who's guarding me."
Echoed Paul Pierce: "I'm not really concerned about [LeBron on Rondo]. We gotta get the ball to Rondo on the break, let him dictate the pace. It doesn't matter. We've got to get him open, set screens, cause different matchups for him. If they put LeBron on him, it really doesn't matter."
Rondo noted that James is a great help defender and will likely be involved in helping when Rondo doesn't have the ball. That's a strategy similar to what the Los Angeles Lakers used against Rondo in the 2008 NBA Finals. It will be up to Rondo to keep James -- or any defender, for that matter -- honest by making jump shots and finding ways to create havoc when afforded space.
Might be interesting. A couple times in the last game, James got switched over to Rondo because of a couple screens. I thought Parker held his own against Paul Pierce, and James was good against Rondo.

i'm all for lbj taking rondo, in spots.
kobe took westbrook on, and the lakers didn't lose after that.
doesn't mean we'll have success with it, but i think it is worth a try.
i would see how the opening to game 5 goes. if the cavs get out and get on a lead, leave things as they are, and maybe you can try it in game 6 with the comfort of knowing you have game 7 in your back pocket.
if game 5 looks like game 2, you gotta do it. right away.
rondo is a great player, an emerging star, but i'm already tired of the talk about how good he is. it's more on the cavs not being able to do anything right now. rondo is not that good.

and that's what frustrates me the most, Rondo isn't that great, sure he's better than what we got but he's not someone we should have to gameplan for..we are just so weak at that spot it exaggerates how good he is, I personally don't think we've been physical enough with him, i mean take a couple hard playoff fouls when he drives, he's a little guy, he's not going to like that and I bet he'll think twice. Christ you have Z sitting on the bench with 6 fouls we haven't used yet..
Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday. -John Wayne

it's pretty much the same story with the bulls series.
except:
rose is a better player, more dynamic, better around the rim, can finish
but dude has NOBODY to pass too.
rondo has 3 potential hall of famers. big difference.
our backcourt D has got to get better.
the good thing is, this is about as tough as it's going to get with point guards. jameer nelson is really good but i don't think he's as good as rondo or rose.
and the lakers backourt outside of kobe is nothing special.
so if the cavs can get through this series, i will feel much better about a backcourt D that isn't very good.

Agreed, LA has quite a bit to worry about themselves before the finals.
Even if they have aged, sweeping the Spurs is impressive.

Steve Nash is a flat-out warrior with playoff heart. Every quarter, every game.

Orlando swept rounds 1 and 2.
Phoenix swept round 2.
LA is up 3-0 and may end up sweeping round 2.
The Cavs had the best record in the NBA this year and are in a complete dogfight.
What does all this mean?
