I just don't see the SEC wanting GaTech. They recruit ATL with or without them. GaTech doesn't add anything in market value to the SEC because UGa delivers that market.

VaTech, Kansas, Mizzou, A&M. These all deliver competitive teams in new markets.

Maryland too, I just hope the Big10 strikes first on that one (the dark horse team that every conference should want).

Some conflicting reports... Originally a tweet had said that aTm turned down an invitation to the PAC.

And in about a half hour later the aTm officals released a statement saying they did not. And they are weighing their options.

Something seemingly arbitrary but their AD is in Idaho right now and Larry Scott is went to College Station.

Larry Scott's Flight itinerary the past couple of days.

Looks like he's heading to KC.

the regents meet tuesday for most bigXII schools, no reason to rule out anything until then for any school.

FYI to everyone. The Big Ten won't change their name. They've trademarked the name and it is a marketable name that is identified with the conference. There's a reason why they've named the conference the Big Ten, instead of Big 10. The name Big Ten can continue to be used regardless of the amount of teams in the conference, solely because it's referenced more as a trademark than a number. The only way it can make since now is if the teams reside from 10 states.

If they do actually expand to the 16, I would like see the logo as "B16 Ten" where the one is replacing the "I" and a six is replacing the "G" or something along the line of that for sh**s and grins.

I might just start using that now when referencing a full sixteen team conference.

While that makes sense....it's still stupid.

Report: Texas to commit to 10-school Big 12
Posted on: June 14, 2010 10:04 amScore: 115Log-in to rate:Log-in to rate:Log-in to rate:
Texas will announce, perhaps as early as Monday afternoon, that it will commit to a 10-member Big 12, according to a report at OrangeBloods.com.

This is the latest development -- and by far the most important -- in the ongoing expansion of conferences. It would greatly damage the Pac-10's hope of getting to 16 members by adding five more Big 12 schools to go with Colorado, which announced a move to the Pac-10 last week. What's unclear, though, is whether Texas A&M would also commit to the Big 12. The Aggies are reportedly close to accepting an offer to join the SEC.

This goes along with something I said earlier....I think Texas has a keen interest is remaining the heavyweight no matter where they go.

And in the end I just don't see Texas as a PAC 10 team. They are a southern team and fit the SEC if they can't hold together a Texas conference, which sounds like what they are hoping to do.

So if A&M leaves for the SEC does the Big Twelve add TCU to get to 10 members? Also now they can't play a championship game, right?? Or is there a rule that once one is established then you can keep it?

Like I said earlier, there is still a chance the Super Confrence doesn't happen this year. (Although I will happen eventually, too much $$$$) I had a feeling that once Jim Delany said that the Big "Ten" will pause for 12-18 months on further confrence expansion that he knew something about the Texas situation. They wouldn't let other confrences go out and get to 16 teams while they sit back and take the scraps left.

These OrangeBloods guys are all over the map. It's like a different report every 3rd day. I don't buy any of it until I see an official announcement. Why would Texas stay in the Big 12 with 10 or 9 teams? There's more money in the Pac-10. Yes, if they keep the Big 12 alive, Texas controls everything...but how long until Kansas, Iowa St, Kansas St. and Mizzou bolt knowing their voice isn't heard? And if Texas A&M leaves for the SEC, and they should, that leaves 9 teams.

And yes, if the Big 12 is only 10 teams, they can't have a conference title game anymore (unless there's a grandfather rule). I suppose Texas could sway A&M to stay, get TCU, and then steal someone else to get back to 12....but to me, that's not likely. I think TCU wants to be where they are.

I think this is all just a big Western standoff. A few moves were made....but the biggest move has yet to happen. And nobody wants to make the next move. Someone will eventually shoot first.

I think you guys are getting a little too focused on the money and need to focus more on winning. That is what Texas wants....they generate enough money.

I don't know who the Big 12 would try to get......maybe they make a run at Memphis for the 10 mil being offered in sponsorships..who knows.

I think Texas is doing this to buy time. They don't want the PAC 10....they want to keep what they have. If that doesn't work, they will probably start talking to the SEC.

That's my guess.

The departure of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the Pac-10 is imminent, four sources within the Big 12 said Monday.

One source said commissioner Dan Beebe's last-minute plan to save the conference has "zero" chance to succeed. Another source said it is "very unlikely" to succeed.

Texas' interests in being aligned with the research opportunities and academic missions of Pac-10 schools is driving the decision, along with money.

Beebe's last-ditch plan included an emotional plea about preserving rivalries and maintaining the best welfare of the student-athlete, one source said.

Texas A&M is now most likely to join the SEC, a source within the Big 12 said. This move, in the wake of Colorado's and Nebraska's departure, would further diminish the chance of Beebe's plan succeeding, one source said.

Texas' decision is expected to come no later than Tuesday. One source familiar with Texas' plans suggested a hearing on Wednesday at the Texas House of Representatives is "a nonfactor."

A report on Orangebloods.com said that Texas was meeting Monday with the other remaining nine schools in the Big 12 about a TV deal included in a plan put together by Beebe that would keep the league intact with its current programs.

The plan includes assurances that a TV deal could net each school between $14 million and $17 million, Orangebloods.com reported, and schools such as Texas could still have their own TV network.

Sorry Peen. Nobody generates "enough money" when they can get more. In the history of man, nobody has passed on money when they could cash in (well, Juan Gonzalez did when the Tigers offered $140/10 years...and it proved you go big when you can). And you're talking about greedy college presidents in charge of HUGE institutions that have a bottom line to meet every year in a bad economy. This isn't about winning at all. This is about money and control.

Nebraska was ticked that Texas "ran" the Big 12 and took a lion's share of the money. Same with Colorado.

Losing Nebraska hurts the Big 12's appeal on TV....not in Texas, but nationaly. They are in a tough spot, I agree with you, they either rebuild the Big 12, joing the Pac-10, or join the SEC. I don't know enough about which will net them more money/control....but I'm guessing those will be #1 and #2 on the priority list.

my guess: pure political power play by Texas.

there has been a weird finger-pointing thing going on with 'who' is breaking up the BigXII. First, it was Nebraska, Nebraska points to Texas, Texas now pointing to A&M.

If UT commits to BigXII w/ 10 teams, expect it to rely on A&M staying. But, A&M, by all accounts, is half-way out the door to the SEC. So, Texas can blame A&M for the whole thing.

I don't see A&M staying. UT wants to stack the deck so far in their favor to "save" the conference that it'll kill the overall competitiveness (the UT-Channel alone would minimize conference revenues).

Nothing to see here.

Ya, UT should just rename the conference to the Big Texas. That's what they want anyway. They moved the Big 12 offices to Dallas, they want every Big 12 title game played at new Cowboys stadium (essentially a road game for all non-Texas teams), and they want the bigger markets (them) to get a proportional amount of the conference revenue (and not share their network money). They want it ALL.

I hope it crashes in on their heads.

They won't join the Big Ten because every team shares everything equally (well, the network money anyway).

Interesting question...where will the Big Ten host it's title game? Nebraska wouldn't have joined knowing Ford Field would get it every year. And I don't think the Big Ten honcho's would jive with each school rotating the rights. AND there's no way it can be played with the teams best record (the NFL does it but college presidents would say it's too impossible).

Soldier Field seems like a natural landing place for the game.

Or rotate between 2 sites, one East and one West. Detroit and Madison?

I was thinking Chicago is more the center of the current members, but that is a fair point as it's a nice stadium and conference offices are there. Though, I'd like to think we keep it open (let in the elements).

Memorial Stadium (Nebraska) to Solider Field - 533 Miles
Beaver Stadium (Penn State) to Solider Field - 582 Miles

Beaver Stadium to Lucas Oil Stadium - 499 Miles
Memorial Stadium to Lucas Oil Stadium - 642 Miles

Lincoln, NE to Chicago, IL by air - 464 miles
State College, PA to Chicago, IL by air - 526 miles

Lincoln, NE to Indy by air - 557 miles
State College, PA to Indy by air - 450 Miles

I too would like to see the Champ game out in the elements, but I don't see the Big Ten going for it. Plus that's a really nice stadium in Indy and I definitely see it happening.

Exactly.....like I said, Texas doing what's best for Texas.

Punch.....no doubt money talks.....but winning brings in money....there are many avenues to consider in this decision

No SEC homerisim here, or rose colored glasses, so I expect you and others to do the same..put your 10 gallon Stetson on and think from the Longhorns perspective....all assuming the Big 12 falls apart:

Texas is a big state, so they know travel is a part of the deal, but if you start talking about Big Ten schools or PAC 10 schools, you are talking 1500-2000 mile road trips 4-5 times a year. The SEC offers much shorter trips.....LSU....both Mississippi schools, Arkansas, Alabama.

The way it's set up now is two games against the east.....not sure if travel is further to Columbia, SC, Gainesville, Fla. or Knoxville, Tn . , but is is shorter than to Washington or Oregon....or PSU, OSU or MSU.

I am sure Texas isn't overly enthusiastic about taking 4-5 1800 mile road trips a year.

And it's just not football travel it's also baseball, soccer, track & feild, girls lacross ect.....

You start adding all that up and the cost of travel gets high.

Texas turns down Pac-10; Big 12 schools have framework of deal
By CHUCK CARLTON / The Dallas Morning News
The remaining Big 12 members are close to a remarkable comeback that will ensure the conference's viability of 10 members a source familiar with the negotiations told The Dallas Morning News.

Several small details need to be ironed out, but the framework of an agreement appeared to be in place Monday afternoon.

Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott confirmed that the University of Texas has declined an invitation to join the conference. The decision will preserve the Big 12 as a 10-team conference, assuming Texas A&M elects to remain. Texas A&M officials were deliberating Monday afternoon.

In a brief phone conversation, Scott said: "We've been informed by University of Texas president Bill Powers that Texas will stay with the Big 12. We have not received definitive details about this decision. It is our understanding that Texas was going to meet the terms that we have proposed."

As he left the Main Building, Powers declined comment.

I also wonder what the Pac-10 does, will they stay at 11 teams or try to nab someone else to make it an even 12 and have a championship game....that is the ultimate end game isn't it?

I imagine they will make an offer to utah. the utes were the fall back plan if a&m didn't come on board to put the conference at 16 teams.

THe big 12 gave texas a deal they couldn't pass up. 20-25 million, plus they get to keep the all the money from their own tv deal. Teams like kansas, k-state, folded like a house of cards. They sold their soul to texas. Osborne knew to get the hell away from texas and their politics. I think down the road you will see the big 12 disolve. Too much was given to 1 school to make this work.

I thought for sure A&M had the cajones to go SEC no matter what to break away from the UT shadow. It was risky competitively, but also their real chance at becoming great down the road.

I don't blame Kansas, K-State, Baylor or Iowa State - it was either this or risk nothing.

But, the others had a chance. They have only themselves to blame down the road.

I don't get Notre Dame ....

I mean .... I undertstand that they get $15 million from NBC for their TV deal ..... but they could get $20 million from the Big Ten Network. (at least that's what each member school made lasy year) Notre Dame plays a schedule most years that cannot put them into Championship consideration because they cannot schedule enough "big games" due to conference requirements for most of the top teams. They are Notre Dame .... and they have big name appeal ...... but their ratings are slipping .... the "bloom is off the rose" so to speak .... and this would be a perfect time to make a move to the Big Ten ..... start a conference schedule that could bring them a National Championship possibility .... and restore some luster.

they risk losing quite a bit by moving to any conference.

if they move to the big ten, they lose out on recruits.

what little they get anyways. they just become another wisconsin or michigan state. even though playing on nbc isn't what it was 30 years ago, it still makes them stick out a little bit.

if they get thrown into the rest of the pack, nobody will go there. why would you go and play a big ten schedule at notre dame when you can go to other schools in the big ten? especially with ohio state and penn state running the conference?

in my opinion, they'll never be a big dog again. and their delusional fanbase continues to think they still are.

Yes on the rule.

You have to have 12 teams with divisions in order to hold a "extra" game....as in championship game.

I don't know how the rule would apply for a league that had 12 teams and divisions and then goes below that number. My initial feeling is you couldn't do that any longer as now you would be able to play everybody in your conference and still be able to schedule a out of conference game.

Everybody needs on OC game....be it a top team or a share the wealth team.....many NCAA programs couldn't exist without a big money game against a top team, and top teams need a breather in the schedule.

I would say the Big 12....now 10, will have to add a couple of teams to conduct business as usual.

Oh....Neb to the Big 10 and Colorado to the Pac 10 if it hasn't been answered.

Utes move on up with long-awaited Pac-10 invite
By Matt Hinton
As expected, the Mountain West wins one, then loses one: Less than a week after adding mid-major powerhouse Boise State to the conference roster, the MWC is giving up Utah to the Pac-10. The university will hold a press conference Thursday immediately following a meeting of the Board of Trustees – the only agenda item: "Discussion of athletic conference" – to make the move official.

Locally, the move splits Utah with its natural Beehive State rival, BYU, a solid rivalry dating to 1922. More important from the national perspective, though, is the hit to the Mountain West's crusade for full BCS privileges, including an automatic bid to one of the big-money bowls for the conference champion and vastly greater share of the bowl payout. Already, the success of Utah, BYU and TCU over the last two years has the MWC within striking distance of automatic BCS contention in 2012, according to the Series' own three-pronged test for inclusion; Boise's addition threatened to put the league over the top, especially if an automatic slot opened up with the implosion of the Big 12.

Instead, the Big 12 survives, the jilted Pac-10 is forced to settle for just one new addition to get to an even dozen after poaching Colorado last week and the Mountain West bids a reluctant farewell to one of its flagship members.

Utah will be the first school to exit the MWC since the conference was forged by exiles from the 16-team WAC experiment in 1999. But if there is a "mid-major" outfit prepared to cross the divide into one of the "Big Six" conferences, clearly it's the Utes, who are 13-4 against "Big Six" competition (5-3 vs. the Pac-10) since 2004, with a pair of undefeated seasons and subsequent BCS bowl wins. They're only two years removed from a 13-0 run that landed them a No. 2 finish in the AP poll and some serious national-championship buzz after a decisive Sugar Bowl upset of Alabama. They have the longest bowl winning streak in the country, now at nine games. They hail from one of the fastest-growing states in the Union. They could be Pac-10 contenders within five years, and that counts as a conservative estimate.

Twelve teams almost certainly means a divisional split and conference championship game for the conference, which – in contrast to the extreme brand loyalty of the 10-team Big 12 and 12-team Big Ten – may actually concede to the mathematically inevitability of becoming the "Pac-12." Pencil the Utes into the new Pac-12 South, then, and marvel at how grown-up they look there next to USC and UCLA and fellow newcomer Colorado. The promotion has been a long time coming.
