Ok so somehow I have managed to get a nasty virus on my work computer. I have disconnected the wirless internet adapter because I am worried about passwords being stolen etc.
I have the AVG antivirus system. When I try and click on the AVG icon I get ...
Application cannot be executed. The file avgui.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?
I get a Antivirus Software infiltration alert saying I am being attacked and it could be a password stealing attack, a trojan dropper or similar. It then says where the attack is from and the threat is : Win32/Nugel.E
Somekind of Antispyware Soft scan occurs and it lists some 30 odd viruses, mostly high or critical status?
It trys to direct me to a website called adult.com or some other rogue sites and a site called wareprotect.net
I am completely stuck and have no idea how to sort this? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I've had that one before. I was able to download MalWare Bytes and get it removed. Then I ran it again and then I ran AVG. And then, for good measure, I ran my company's pre-loaded Norton Antivirus.
However, it returned fairly quickly and my laptop had to be junked and I had to get a new one (oh darn, right?).
Perhaps someone more knowledgeable knows a better way to remove this one. Good luck!

holycrap i got hit by the same one last week...first thing i did was turned my internet off. i didn't want to shut my computer down cuz i didn't want to compeletly lose it...but i had no choice cuz no matter what prg i tried to turn on, it gave me that same error.
I have no clue how i got rid of it. But i literally just came back for the first time and so far so good.
This is what i did. I finally had enough ofi t and shut my computer down. I started in safe mode and tried to scan for viruses, that didn't work.
I finally tried to log in to the "guest" user. this was not infected at all..so i ran AVG with "full scan" and it also gave me bunch of stuff that was infected. After which i was still afraid to get back on my main user name.
I finally pulled the trigger today and got on. and nothing! i'm not sure if it's fixed or not i'm running bunch of stuff right now and hoping for the best.

Well I am on the internet using my parents laptop! I just googled antispyware and that is the actual virus. It makes up numerous serious threats to try and get you to pay the subscription to remove (and then presumably wipe out your bank account!) There are endless instructions that may as well be in a different language to me I have just done a system restore to last Thursday and am running a virus scan now, I have no idea if this will sort the problem. There are some twisted and sick people in this world

It sounds like sysguard that was floating around lae last year.
There are plenty of instructions for eliminating it available online.
After you delete it you can go to an online scan site like Trend Micro and do a scan online. I have founf that an online scan will sometimes work when a local scan fails.

Yup. I somehow got infected last year with AntiVirus2009:
* a window with supposed scan results from software I knew I didn't install (well, at least not intentionally)
* my browsers (IE, FF, Opera, Safari, Flock, Chrome....I'm a hoarder...lol) were hijacked to the extent that I either could not go to legitimate anti-virus / malware sites or was redirected
Nice ploy from the jerks that wrote that one, huh? Can you imagine going along with their ruse and giving them your credit card number to purchase the supposed removal. Yikes.
I ended up using a USB drive to install copies of the aforementioned Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and avast anti-virus. MB's anti-malware was particularly recommended for that virus and did appear to remove it. I uninstalled AVG, ran MB and installed, updated and ran avast. I did like the fact that avast automatically runs a boot scan after installation since that should prevent most viruses' executables from starting up. I finished the whole episode up by running a web based scan at Trend Micro's Housecall .
I had used AVG for years, but that was all I needed to switch and have stayed clean (at least as far as I can tell) using avast. I also try to regularly use Housecall and a few locally installed anti-spyware apps.

I had some weird virus that would delete the Malware Bytes .exe file every time I downloaded it so I had to download it under a fake name to get it past the virus and then boot in safe mode and run the Malware Bytes program.
I had AVG for awhile but got rid of it b/c it seemed like it slwed down my system a whole lot. Until I got rid of it my audio would slow down and distort whenever I did anything. Now that AVG is gone it isn't so bad. I still can't open a whole lot of tabs like I used to be able to, but I can now go online and still listen to music without the computer slowing down and the music playing in slow motion.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

I would strongly suggest getting rid of AVG programs.
I have found their music software to be problematic, i can only imagine the havoc that a virus program would cause.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Not sure what you're talking about - AVG technologies has never made any music software - it's a great (and free) antivirus, as independent test after independent test has shown

I only use Avast and never any problems. Also heard excellent things of Avira. Must be the in thing to have your protection software start with AV.

My in-laws bought a new computer last year and as a thank you for watching our kids a few days a week I bought them Micro-Trend Internet Security. Since it came with the ability to install it on (3) computers I installed in on mine as well.
But it will be up soon. My brother told me he uses Avira and swears by it. I think once the subscription is up I will unistall Micro-Trend and try out Avira.

As CDawg alluded to Avira is well regarded. Any review of free AV that I've read has had it as the top app.

I used to install AVG exclusively on any PC that I worked on, but recently I've been going to Avira & Avast more because of AVG's tendency to prevent the Windows Defender service from starting.
I got turned onto Avira by way of using Ultimate Boot CD for a large amount of my PC recovery work. It's good, it's fast and it seems reliable thus far.... and it's free.

A bit off topic purp, but have you tried to create a bootable USB with the Ultimate Boot CD? I think I saw instructions at their site, but haven't tried it.

No, I haven't... I've always just burned a CD, but that is actually fine for me.
While the risk of cross-infection would be minimal for booting off of a writable USB device, I just prefer to use the CD. Though, the already on-hand extra storage and extra speed would be nice.... as would the ability to then customize it on the fly and add extra drivers, utilities and other stuff.

Yeah, the "drivers, utilities and other stuff" is why I'm interested. I'm not in IT, but have become the default computer guy within my extended family. I just like the idea of having a what I need on a USB drive or two.

Windows Defender is JUNK. The program eats away at processor time when running because it does not know to exclude itself from its own scans. On some systems it locks up the computer as a result.

I got the same exact virus yesterday. First sign I saw of it was when I clicked the link to the "technical question" thread in the fan feedback forum yesterday.
