http://www.wtam.com/pages/indians.html INDIANS RELIEVER KEITH FOULKE WILL RETIRE Pitchers and catchers reported to Winter Haven today, all but one of them that is. Keith Foulke will announce his retirement, ending the closer competition before the first practice session even took place. Joe Borowski will be the Tribe 9th inning man after Foulke decided to call it quits. Even though it was called a competition, Foulke was the guy most expected to win the job and be the team’s stopper, the role he had with the Boston Red Sox when they won the World Series in 2004. The 34 year old signed a one year deal worth 5 million dollars, incentives could have pushed it to 7 million. There was a mutual option on the 2008 season. Foulke battled injuries last year including a bad elbow. More on this breaking story Friday starting with Wills and Snyder (5-9a) and on through out the day. Up to the minute news on here on WTAM.COM.

WOW!!! THAT IS AMAZING, MAYBE EVEN ASTOUNDING! (had to go along with the theme of all caps for the thread title, ya know) You could have just done like some do, and put asterisks around it: *****Indians Reliever Foulke to Retire***** Or even better, how some folks include in the title: MUST READ!!!!! (makes me wonder about the people not on this board, are they missing out on something important that they must read??? should we notify someone to make sure that EVERYBODY reads it since we MUST read it?) Just pullin' yer leg Dr J, all I really wanted to say was: Poor ol' Tribe.........

With Borowski additionally coming off an injury, this really (again) puts the Tribe in a bind at closer. One would assume that the team doc's checked Foulke out before signing him to the deal, so I'm generally assuming this isn't a physical problem, more as it is a personal decision on his behalf. With that said, thanks for letting us know in mid-February Mr. Foulke. Why again couldn't we resign Howry for $3-4 million a year? This means $5-7 million more for the Hafner fund.

LOL
You guys are tools.
I am too busy and too lazy to type it, so I cut and pasted it.
The title happened to be all caps.
Yeah, yeah.....I could have fixed the title in less amount of time that it took me to write this reply. Shut up.

I don't know what you meant by the rolling eyes, but I have gained great respect for Keith Foulke today if he retired because he couldn't get healthy.
He had 5 mil guaranteed and signed to him and decided to walk away because he felt that he couldn't live up to his and the club's expectations. Good for him. He could have sat on the DL all year and collected a check, but decided not to disrespect the Cleveland fans and their organization. If that's the case, that says a whole lot about the guy.
It's the same reason I respected Jamir Miller. Miller could have collected a paycheck for one more year, but he decided it was best not to do it if he couldn't go full speed.

Ouch, not happy about this at all. I had high hopes for Foulke and did not feel comfortable with Borowski as the closer. Guess there is no choice now.

Not the best news on the first day of spring training. I'm not a huge Borowski fan, but at least there is some experience back there. Plus, this gives a chance for Cabrera to move into a more important role and eventually become closer himself.

I agree. Chances are good we wouldn't have cut him in the hope his velocity returned.
The guy knew it wasn't going to work and decided to hang'em up rather than milk us for 5 mil.

Miller was cut and I remember the day. I don't know where you got that he could have just sat on the DL and us not do anything about it.
Faulke probably had a reporting clause in his contract or something about starting at least one game...if he knew he is headed for more elbow surgery, he might have just retired because he knew his year was over.

He is a closer, I dont think he would have a clause guaranteeing him a start.

Miller had a contract offer from the Ravens, but decided to call it quits rather than take the money and run.
Foulke could have reported, played long toss, went on the DL, and his contract is still guaranteed.

Nice referrence.
This could hurt the Tribe a lot but....I don't know how much Foulke was going to work anyway. Anybody still out there?

Sheesh. We're off to a roaring start so far! I guess it was a bit of a crap shoot to begin with, however. Best of luck to him (and to us).

Sad to see - he had a great year when the Sox won their WS title... was hoping he'd find his groove again in Cleveland - guess not... hope we can get our money back.

The money isn't really the issue (although we do get it all back). It's being without a closer that worries me. I hope we can find someone to get the job done this year.

Well I agree - but I'd rather have Foulke retire now then try to go for a month or so and realize that he doesn't have it anymore... we need to bring someone else in to compete for the job - wether it be a young guy or try to get a trade for someone.

Does every Cleveland season have to start with a prat fall? I agree with you about Foulke. He really gained my respect with this move. Five million is a big lure but he did the right thing by us. Unlike the Juan Gonzales and Keith Hernandez of the world.
