Pulled over today, 92 Dollar violation, seat belt. Ridiculous!

It's the third time I've gotten a ticket in this town, and fourth time I've been pulled over in it (Darien, CT). The cops have nothing to do but give out traffic violations. I was on my way to work, and this has been one of my main fears about working in Darien (the police and getting pulled over).

The officer was in an intersection and I drove by and he turned left, followed me very closely, then pulled me over. I couldn't believe it. I had my seatbelt on when he came up to me, but when I said I had my seatbelt on, he said "Not when you passed that intersection, right?", unfortunately I didn't have the heart to lie to him.

My job has flexible workdays so I don't necessarily miss a day of work taking it to court. Think I should take it to court? I mean, how he can see for sure I don't have a seatbelt without driving way too close to me in a 25 mph zone. If he saw me without my seatbelt on, he saw that I was wearing my Celtics jersey, may be he didn't like the Celtics! I could have just pulled out, and put on my seatbelt when I saw him. And going to court usually works in your favor anyway.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Is it a moving violation, or does it affect insurance? Has anyone taken it to court?

It's your conscience, so if you can live with lying to a judge and have the ability to make him believe your word against the cop's, go for it.

But I gotta ask man: Why not wear your seatbelt?

I used to think such laws infringed upon my rights as a human being, but when I started to realize how such things affect the insurance industry, and thus my own pocketbook, it becomes bigger than "big brother taking care of me."

Back to your question, you make it sound as though you told the cop you didn't have it on. I don't know exactly how you can then go to court and put your own word against the cop's, especially after he already had your word when he wrote the ticket.

I don't know about there .. but in Ohio they can pull you over for not wearing a seat belt and ticket you.

They don't need another reason to pull you over first.

I was stoned when he pulled me over (ironically on my way to work), so I didn't have the heart to lie to him. For some reason when I'm high, I have trouble lying or doing anything negative like that, period. Plus when I told the truth, I didn't know it was going to be 92 DOLLARS! I figured may be 40. Five minutes later I was kicking myself in the ass for not arguing with him more.

In court, I won't be under any influence, therefore I hope to show my good record, and may be tell the judge he can't prove I wasn't wearing my seatbelt so he should throw it out or......reduce the ticket

You are right about the conscience thing though, I have trouble lying which could make my situation difficult But I don't have much money and am tight with it, so the possibility of reducing this ticket can be persuasive toward getting me to lie. I'm not sworn in or anything, right?

Pay it and forget about it. You will not win then have to pay court costs.

Exactly, just pay the fine. Why waste your own time to argue over $92. I just can't comprehend actually wasting any amount of time for something so trivial.

If you do decide to go, good luck.

Traffic court doesn't really cost me money Andra, as I said, I make my own hours, and I love things like taking on the man in court. I did it for the driving w/ cellphone, might as well do it with this. Court cost is free, no cost from work

And yeah Milk Man, I make 16 an hour, so it really ruined my day. I mean, that cut downs on what I make from a full days work. If i can make that up in an hour or two (waiting for court), it's worth it. How long do you usually wait for traffic court? I didn't wait long for the cellphone thing

Lets see, you were high on your way to work when you were pulled over and got off with a seat belt violation for $92.

If I was you, I'd pay the fine and invest in some lottery tickets.

Yeah, a cop in Connecticut pulled you over for wearing a celics jersey

I'm thinking you were just looking for a reason to throw that in there.

Not hispanic, why?

(For Tulsa)I didn't have anything in the car and smoke a lot so I'm not sure the cop would be able to notice. I don't really speed and have a good driving record (besides like 5 speeding tickets (multiple states though), hence the reason I finally stopped speeding)

And yeah, I guess the jersey probably wasn't the reason. But it was Ray Allen (CT Legend) for what it's worth

Well you can go and hope the officer doesn't show up. One of my teachers was a former DA and had an officer have a heart attack. Almost every case (speeding, seatbelt..etc) that officer was involved in had to be thrown out.

I'd take it to court.

If the judge rules against you I would call him or her a dumbass and demand a real judge and not some poser in a kangaroo court, all the while pounding on the podium with your shoe. Pointing your finger at the judge might work as well..

That or just pay the fine and start wearing your seatbelt.

LMAO you were driving under the influence and got a ticket for no seat belt, then complain about the seat belt ticket, and admit you thought about telling a lie to get out of it. Is this candid camera, or are you really serious? You should be sending the cop a thank you note instead of complaining.

Q: What is the Connecticut seat belt law?

A: Drivers and front seat passengers MUST wear safety belts. All rear seat passengers aged 4-16 years old.

Seems pretty cut and dried to me. You might fight it ..... but are almost certainly wasting your time ..... especially if you already admitted to it.

And was recenly in court for driving and talking on a cell phone, and has knowledge already that the law enforcement is heavy on traffic in his area.

And blames it on them and maybe the fact that he was wearing a Celtics jersey.

Classic.

I hope someone who knows you reads this thread, prints it, and delivers it to the Judge. He couldn't do anything with it of course, but then he would know you and hopefully get you off the road the next time you do something stupid and hopefully don't kill someone.

You have nio business operating a motor vehicle based upon your posts here because you are irresponsible and immature as hell.

Instead of whining, why not man up and just pay the fine. It's YOUR fault you got pulled over, its YOUR fault you will have to miss out on any work. Starting a thread and whining...wondering how long it will take....if you should lie in court...OMG GROW UP!!!!!!!

I am speechless.

You do know that driving stoned is not only dangerous to you, but also every other driver on the road, don't you?

Next time, just slam your car into the nearest oak tree. That will show the courts that you don't need to wear your seat belt while driving stoned. Then they will put it on your permanent record that you no longer have to use any safety restraint system in your vehicles. They may even let you disable your airbags, if they haven't deployed after slamming into the tree!

Your family must be really proud...

This has become brutal. Jesus folks, just forget the whole thread here. The only thing I can say is that my family is proud of me, I'm a productive person, on my way to living a successful life.

If any of you actually knew me, this wouldn't be the case, but all I can say is that many people who you are driving around, are driving within an hour after smoking, and they're probably safer drivers than some of the people who have been in multiple accidents........

I'm 24, straight A Grad Student, that also works and pays taxes. I'm a very nice guy, (see i'm a regular productive person!) and seem to have been condemned.

(The fact that I had smoked earlier) obviously was a dumb choice by me to add into my post, and it probably was the wrong place to post this situation, period.

Please forgive this about my life (that I smoke) everyone, and let us continue to post on this board the way we all have in the past.

I'm sure that you're a nice guy, and that you get good grades and that you work a decent job and are productive, yada, yada, yda....

Absolutely NONE of that has anything to do with anything in this thread... but people are calling you out on your foolishness (to put it mildly).

And yes, that is _precisely_ what it is.
Albeit he was a little harsh in his words, Shep probably said it best.

That's fair, I still think I'm gonna take it to court though.

I just wish this thread could be closed or something, can you do that Purp?

Petey, I think the ultimate points in this thread you're missing are as follows:

1. In life you have to man up for your actions. This doesn't mean to lie to a judge to try and save $92. You did the offense, you got caught, you got off lucky the guy didn't notice or question that you were stoned, man up and pay the fine.

2. Consider the potential consequences of your actions before you do them. As you mentioned I'm sure your a nice and productive guy, but part of being a nice productive adult means you're responsible too. Responsible adults don't smoke or drink and drive. There are other people on the road to consider too.

I don't know about you, but it would cost me more to take time off work, court costs, parking fees etc to fight it, than just pay it.

What I think gets me most is not that you smoked and drove, I know a lot of people that take a couple hits regularly, but that you did it before going to work. Would you take a couple swigs of Jack before going to work? To me, this shows lack of respect for your job.company/co-workers, regardless if it has much affect on you.

But your own words were "I was stoned", which to most means you smoked enough that you knew it affected you at least slightly. I may have a drink or 2 at happy hour, but I wouldn't say "I was buzzed" unless I had enough that it affected me physically.

I'm floored that you even put that in there. Some things are better left to yourself.

I apologize for coming across harshly.

I'm not some uptight ahole that would condemn someone for doing things recreationally as long as they don't put anyone else in danger.

My advice is to pay the fine and thank your lucky stars that you didn't get in an accident and hurt yourself, and more importantly, anyone else's loved ones.

It was a joke. There is a huge uproar over profiling Hispanics in Arizona because of illegal immigration.

I don't really see why this is a point. It should be pretty easy to get straight A's in grad school. After 3 years, I just earned my Masters with straight A's. After all, you are specializing in your particular area without having to take all of the other crap.

As others said, if you were stoned, just be thankful that you only got a seatbelt ticket.

If you look at the post, it was in response to ParrotHead's remark

"Your Parents Must Really Be Proud"

So I was answering that point, by saying, why wouldn't they be proud of me? It was just kind of a harsh statement, but it's okay ParrotHead, I saw the later on post, definitely accept your apology. Sometimes writing can come across very harshly, and my family is obviously a personal subject, as it is for everyone.

FloridaFan: I'm a pretty good worker, and I guess we don't see the same way with this situation. But I also don't equate alcohol and weed the same way. They have completely different effects on people. Co-Workers of mine smoke too, and I just don't see how it's disrespectful to the company or anyone else if I handle all my responsibilities. Never been fired, always show up and on-time. I take pride it the way I do my job....... I guess there's just one hitch about me, I like to smoke.

But yeah, don't worry all you drivers, I will be quitting for pretty much good in a month because of the career track that I am on (and probably the fact that I'm sort of reaching a point in my life where I just can't manage it and my responsibilities). So don't worry folks, the roads will be "safer", although I'd be more nervous about some 90 year old or someone who is actually a bad driver than little ole' me.
