ORLANDO, Fla. -- The NBA still leads the way in sports diversity.
The NBA was again the only men's professional sports league to receive a combined "A" for race and gender in the annual report released Wednesday by the University of Central Florida's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport.
The league had slight decreases for blacks in front-office positions but is still the best among men's pro sports. Women made up 44 percent of professional employees at the league offices.
The study shows 77 percent of the NBA players were black, 18 percent white, 3 percent Latino, 1 percent Asian and 1 percent "other." International players stayed steady at 18 percent.
The report is based on information published in official team guides at the beginning of the 2009-10 season.
Ah diversity means something different than I remember I think. Although hopefully this can be learned from.

Here is the link to all the reports/comments. http://www.tidesport.org/This is their 'Highlights" section of the NBA report: Quote:
• In the NBA, 82 percent of the players were people of color, remaining constant from last year’s totals. This ties the highest percentage of players of color since the 1994‐95 season. The percentage of African‐American players also remained constant from last year’s report at 77 percent. The percentage of Latinos and Asians remained constant, at three and one percent respectively. The percentage of international players stayed steady as well at 18 percent. • Professional opportunities for people of color in the NBA League Offices – at 36 percent – increased from 35 percent for the 2008‐09 season. This is the highest percentage in the NBA’s history and the highest in the history of any professional sport. • Women held 44 percent of the professional positions in the NBA League Office. This increased by one percentage point from the previous Report Card and was higher than any other men’s professional league in any previous Report Card though still below the NBA’s high of 49 percent female professionals in the league office in 1995‐96. • There were 34 women in vice president positions in the NBA League Office during the 2009‐10 NBA season, which is an increase of three. • Michael Jordan, who owns the NBA Charlotte Bobcats, is men’s pro sports only African‐American team majority owner. He succeeded Robert Johnson, previous owner of the Bobcats. • There were one Asian and eight African‐American head coaches at the beginning of the 2009‐10 NBA season. The percentage of head coaches of color dropped from 40 percent in 2008‐09 to 30 percent. • 41 percent of assistant coaches in the NBA were coaches of color. • While there were small decreases for people of color in key team positions, the NBA was still the best in men’s pro sport for team presidents, senior administrative and professional administrative positions. • At the beginning of the 2009‐10 regular season, there were four (12 percent) African‐American presidents in the NBA. While it was a decrease from last year’s total of five, it was still the best for any sport. • The percentage of people of color holding NBA team senior administrative positions decreased by two percentage points from last season to less than 21 percent. • The percentage of people of color holding team professional administrative positions dropped by two percentage points to 27 percent. The percentage of women holding these posts dropped from 40 percent to 39 percent. • As of the end of the 2009‐10 season, 56 percent of the NBA’s referees were white, 41 percent were African‐American and three percent were Latino. Of the 60 referees, one was a woman.
Edit: Sorry report is a PDF document so some garbage came thru too.
Players section in report is just funny.
Quote:
In the NBA, 82 percent of the players were people of color, the same as last year, tied for the highest percentage of players of color since the 1994‐95 season. The percentage of African‐American players remained at 77 percent since last year’s Racial and Gender Report Card. This was the highest percentage of African‐American players since the 2001‐02 season.
In the NBA’s 2009‐10 season, 18 percent were white and three percent were Latino. This was again the lowest percentage of white players since the 1994‐95 season. Asians comprised one percent of NBA rosters, and an additional one percent of players are people of color categorized as “other.” The percentage of Latino players remained the same as the last three seasons (three percent) while the percentage of white players decreased from 20 percent in the 2007‐08 season. Eighteen percent of the players were international, which was the same as the 2008‐09 season.

LMAO... So by national demographics.. 77% of the population is white.. 18% of the players in the NBA are white 4.4% of the population is Asian.. 1% of the players in the NBA are Asian 15.4% of the population is Latino.. 3% of the players in the NBA are Latino 13% of the population is black.. 77% of the players in the NBA are black And they get an A+ for diversity of players? If we could just get that black percentage up over 90% I bet we could get an A++++... if that's possible.

Dumbest thing ever.
Sports isn't about some diversity crap... it is about putting the best players out there.
Their grade is meaningless.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

the way these teams are run now, it is such a cutthroat business, that i don't think any one coach or general manager or any kind of personnel guy could even think of using race at all.
i agree, you put the best players out there. i have a feeling eric mangini doesn't care what color you are.

Now of course, if you have the same demographic of coaches in the NFL ... we would have to make up a "Rooney Rule" to change the blatent racism.

The ONLY people that give a damn are the people pushing a race based agenda.

reminds me of that epsisode of south park where they had that conjoined fetus lady (stick with me) and all she wanted was to just be left alone so she could do her job (school nurse) but kyle's mom wanted conjoined fetus awareness week and had this giant festival type thing where it just drew more attention to her.
i think bringing out stats like that is all it's doing. nobody is playing the race card and people have to bring unimportant stuff like that up?

HAHA..thats actually funny cuz it's true..
but with the SAME regard..u can look at some random compnay and pretty much flip the stats(as in more whites than blacks) and THEY might lead you to believe they are leading or doing well and call themselves the most diverse company in the industry. And when a non-white(ANY minority) says otherwise they are made fun of. and it's mostly followed up with "well if you get a good education and if u have the skills u get the job..etc etc" well guess what? more black ppl want to play sports and are more atheltic generally. so they dominate the player side. dont forget who is keeping them in the league...the majority of the white coaches

It's definitely not the same. This is an independant study conducted by a university, not the NBA themselves claiming it.

Just a general reply .....
In fairness, the NBA does have European Players .... Players from China ...... Really, players from all over the world. They are more diverse than any other sport.
Diverse doesn't mean evenly divided. It just means more different types of parts.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

MLB could make a case for being more diverse. They don't have the Europeans but they have many more different nationalities from the Carribean, Central and South America and more Asian countries included in their membership.

The NFL got a C+ for including women, thanks to the efforts of Big Ben.
