I figured I would start this thread to say that North Korea is holding Brazil to a 0-0 tie right now! Also we can use this to talk about the non-USA games. I am at work but found a site that streams the game. I have it on alt+tab in case my manager pops his head in lol shhhhh

0-0 North Korea v Brazil and its 46:00 in the second half. I, for one, am shocked. Anyone else watching?

They're trying to hold on....but Brasil will eventually score one and then play prevent. North Korea has no push.

It would be funny to see Brasil lose though.

yep...i really enjoyed watching the Ivory Coast outplay Portugal...its too bad they had to settle for a draw though...

I cant stand watching Portugal...i think Ronaldo ruins it for me. just watching a guy flop so bad is so annoying. Any contact whatsoever...actually there doesnt even have to be contact for Ronaldo to go down...its the worst

i really can't stand people whining about the world cup.

for one, it's not like it is taking away anyone's nighttime tv away. these games are over before you get home from work.

i didn't like soccer much before the 2006 cup, but i gave it a chance and got hooked. i won't watch mls or anything like that but occasionally i'll watch some EPL on the weekends.

but even when i didn't watch soccer prior to 2006, i didn't bag on it like a lot of people are.

people are the same way with hockey. they don't give it a chance. it's more of a sport than baseball will ever be.

so you complain about people complaining about sports and then go on and bag on baseball?

and the hardest thing to do in sports is to hit a baseball at the MLB level.

I disagree thats the hardest thing to do. HUNDREDS of people in the pros do it every yr and countless more in the minors. I would think a strike out is harder. The hardest thing in sports to me would be something that takes year to hone the skill, like grind a handrail in skateboarding or something. I've always thought something like that would be waaaaay harder. Hell throwing a TD pass would be harder to me. Roughly only 32 ppl a yr do that. Or what about a gymnastics move, I bet you could give a gymnast 50 tries to hit a fast ball and he'd do it. Yet you could give Ortiz/Rpince Fielder 1000 tries to do routine gymnast move/event and doubt they could do it.

@LBJ - Least in hockey is phsyical and goals every game. Sorry soccer just seems whimpy to mean. I think its extremely boring. Can't get into it no matter how hard I try, the most bored I have ever been at a sporting event was going to a columbus crew game. They played two game and not one goal was scored.

no, it's not. people always say that. try playing goal.

it's coming at you the same speed, except the guy firing it is not trying to hit your glove. there are people standing in your way, some of them trying to deflect it past you, not to mention there are guys setting up shop right in front of you, jabbing at your arms and legs with a stick.

playing goalie much much more difficult then hitting a baseball.

and i took a shot at baseball, but i don't whine about it being on tv either.

so no.

also, there are situations in hockey, where as a goalie, you have zero chance to stop the puck. with baseball you always have a chance.

but again, standing around waiting for a ball to come to you, and then going and sitting in a dugout, and just switching back and forth on that is soooooooooooooo hard.

i've heard people in the media, both writers and personalities whining about it.

complaining about the rules or the way things are done, about how "nobody cares" complaining that a 1-0 game is so boring, yadda yadda yadda.

i've heard more complaining about the cup then i have people saying how fun it is.

i disagree and here's why. a reasonably athletic 30 year old could within a year or two figure out how to skate and eventually grind a handrail (I learned rollerblades from scratch in my mid-20's and can do a reasonable amount of tricks now).

do you really think a 30year old from scratch could learn how to hit a baseball thrown by Felix Hernandez, Stephen Strasburg, et cetera including not knowing if the pitch is coming is a fastball, curve, slider, etc ?

I played baseball growing up and with a professional trainer I don't think I would be able to do it.

but, if we want to take it a step further; the hardest thing to do in sports is to hit a homerun off a MLB pitcher.

Sorry you put me out there on the diamond and give me a try all day I will put my bat on a ball sorry. Outside of rec league softball I havent played baseball since about 6th grade either, but i will eventually put a bat on a ball in a day. fine two yrs from now someone could hit a handrail, but what was harder? Thats all I was going for, some sports take years of dedication to do.

i wanted this to be a thread about people who watch the games and want to talk about them.

anybody have any comments so far about Spain V Switzerland?

i don't care about the soccer bashing. i've heard it all my life and throughout college. i don't defend soccer. i love the sport. most people in america don't. i accept that. i don't care. let's leave that stuff off of this thread.

Isn't it ironic that a non-USA thread turned into a baseball thread?

As someone that skateboarded for 5+ years....grinding a handrail is crazy hard. I never had the stones to land it. And I used to skate those 15+ foot tall halfpipes with 2-3 feet of vert. It took me an entire summer to learn how to ollie....then off a few steps....then off more steps....so, to get onto a handrail, it would be a crazy comittment for a 30-year old. And I learned all my stuff with I was in high school. Trust me, I wouldn't want to be taking the same falls at 37 that I took with I was a teenager. My body wouldn't be able to handle it.

I could probably get a hit off Strasburg within an hour of trying. Wouldn't be easy, but I would eventually get lucky. But with skateboarding/snowboarding, a novice couldn't get lucky and land a great trick. They have longer and steeper learning curves.

With all that being said, I understand we're not comparing apples to apples. Heck, even comparing team sports to other team sports is hard. And comparing positions on each sport can be troublesome too (ice hockey defensemen vs goalie vs center - different jobs and wear in the body).

Getting back to the argument. Soccer is a sport and it's a lot of hard work. While most of us could go kick a ball and run around....we wouldn't be able to do get off the couch and play 90 minutes like these guys (though we probably could with enough time to train).

Soccer is an odd mistress. It could be a "manly sport" but too many European players seem to have destroyed that possibility with their diving and faking injures. Unfortunately, those aspects of the game are built-in and won't go away. If you look hard enough, our "American" sports have their own share of flopping/diving and injury fakers too.

Like lebron (the poster) said, I don't watch MLS at all but I get into the World Cup. I like the horns, I don't mind the low-scoring games (or draws), I kinda have to look the other way when guys dive, and I REALLY LIKE the very little commercials I have to endure while the game is on. And hey, football, hockey, rugby, & basketball are all essentially the same game....trying to get the ball into the opponents goal. Different sized fields and different sized goals are really the only difference.

Spain play at a different level. Their passing and movement both off and on the ball is a joy to watch.

I would expect Torres to be introduced and maybe Spain go to a 442 instead of the 451 with just Villa as the only striker.

Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta 3 of the best imo

Wow ... huge upset.

The best part of this is if Spain do not win the group then they likely face Brazil in the last 16

This game had one thing that most Americans love to see. We as a whole love to cheer for the underdog. I think that is a big part of why we love March Madness.

We also love the comeback. I think for me I'm trying really hard to get into soccer but as a fan those are two things that draw me into games if I don't have a vested interest in one of the teams playing.

For the most part in Soccer the chance for a comeback is not really there. If a team is down by 1 you might see a tie but normally not a comeback victory. If a team gets up by more than that it's basically over.

Please don't take this as me bashing the sport because that isn't what I'm trying to do. I'm just pointing out the reasons I have trouble getting into the sport.

Ya, I get what you're saying. Soccer can be a lot like a boat race. Once one boat grabs the lead, they're all playing off the same wind. Race = over.

In soccer, a team can play a prevent defense and virtually shut down the opposing offense completely. However, if you were watching the Slovakia and New Zealand game yesterday, you'd have seen something surprising. New Zealand scored in injury time to tie. Eseentially, 15 seconds before the game was over. Amazing finish! Too bad I was rooting for Slovakia. Crushing!

I guess the same can be said for most sports. In the NHL, most teams that get the first goal win. And if you think about 5 or 7-game series, the teams that wins first usually wins. And if a team is down 0-3 in a series, it's essentially the same as a soccer team being down 0-3 in one game.

Just trying to paint the right picture.

Again, I'm no soccer honk. I won't watch another minute of soccer until 2014 in Rio (after the last game is played July 11 of this World Cup).

Staying on topic of the thread.....HOLY CRAP! Spain lost! Wow! I'll be talking smack the rest of the day to my Spain coworkers. They pretty much NEED to beat someone who already has a win in their group to advance.

What happens most of the time is that a team gets up 1-0 and then plays with 6 defenders. It's like trying to throw a hail mary when another team has 8 guys standing in the end zone

only 7 countries have won the World Cup, Spain desperately wants to be #8. That's not the way to get it done.

Go USA and then go underdogs.

the only top ranked team to act like they want it is germany 4-0 against austrailia. well, argentina could have had more goals from messi but nigeria's goalie played out of his mind.

from the replay it looked like he whiffed on the ball and in doing so, might have torn a ligament in his knee because his plant foot was stuck in the ground as he spun around.
