I'm looking to change from Time Warner to Direct TV so I can get the NFL package. With that, I'll also need a reliable internet provider and a reasonable price. I guess I can stay with Time Warner but am curious if others have any recommendations for internet provider?

I do work from home occassionally, so having high speed and reliable access is important. Also, if anyone has any good/bad things to say about Direct TV, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

u-verse or fios if either is in your area. you can get "naked" dsl, meaning dsl without phone service.

FiOS is by far at the top of the list if it is available for you.

After that, probably U-Verse.

Having had the "naked" dsl, it isn't bad... it's the same as any other DSL, but they charge you so much you may as well have the landline anyway.
If you aren't going with a landline... just keep TimeWarner for the internet access only.

agreed, without the first two, it'd come down to how much he'd want to stick it to time warner.

If you don't want to stick it to Time Warner... stick with them for your internet.. and you still get the added bonus of still getting basic channels through them as well.. I'm paying the $40 for the 10meg service but routinely get 30meg service through them.. and I still get the basic digital channels on my tv even though I am only paying for internet access..but then even with Directv.. you do get the "local" channels for free..

I've had At&T DSL for years and am satisfied. Good bandwidth for the price. Once I got wired to a remote terminal I experienced no problems.

DishTV will be here later in the morning to install. Our TW cable dropped out sometime Tuesday morning (many hours after Monday night's storm .. go figure). I called them and they told me that they couldn't get a tech here until Friday. As soon as I got off the phone with them I called Dish. $80 a month for their 250 channel package with 2 HD DVRs and a total of 5 TVs. I have been wanting to trim my monthly bill, so it didn't really take much for me to make the change anyway. NFL Network 24 / 7, 365!! I don't know if that will get old and I'm looking forward to finding out.

TW has it's advantages with usually reliable availability and typically free service, but it's worth the money to me even if I occasionally lose the signal. I'll give it the ride for the 2 year agreement and go from there. I wish FiOS or U-Verse was available where I'm at. Maybe by then.

My challenge to get a WBNS signal still exists. TW was not HD and Dish only provides Dayton affiliates. I can get a signal from WBNS if someone will hold the antenna just above the TV near the window.....lmao.

Which those local channels are nice to have on TVs you may have where a set-top box isn't feasible (ie: kitchen, garage, patio, kids rooms)

If you game, you're going to hate DSL. If you're just surfing it wont bother you to switch.

I disagree completely.... but the truth is that which side of this you fall on will vary based upon external conditions.

I had a far more consistent gaming experience with DSL than I have had with cable, and if I could have justified the added cost of running with my "naked" dsl as it is called in here, I would have stayed with it.

The difference is DSL is all yours... you do not contend with anyone for that bandwidth.
With cable, if the teenage kid 3 doors down is wanking it to some HD porn, it is affecting my internet experience as well because we share the same finite amount of bandwidth, and cable routinely oversells its capacity.

I disagree as well. I suck at shooters because of the limits of my hand - eye coordination and not my ping.

The suckage should end today though since I just got my Logitech MX518 mouse. I'm gonna pwn.

I've had both polar opposites with DSL... The first time I had DSL.. when they started out, i had a nice steady connection... The last time I had it, it would drop out all the time especially when someone calls the houseline... this is even with the proper filters and the line coming straight from the box on the outside of the house. Not to mention the slow 1 meg access..

Now on cable.. I've only had it go out once but I have been getting 20-30 meg access.. but then again I do watch a lot of shows and movies online..

Just speaking from expeirience in my area, I've compared my cable to the DSL my buddy has, and it's not really comparable.

j/c I had DSL for several years, then switched to cable as it was needed for my business. I like the cable much better, DSL is crappy here and cuts out too much and Bellsouth has horrid customer service when checking on outages. Cable = no outages.
